In this study, we reported the preparation and prospective application of the nanocomposites of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). CNCs were isolated from bleached sugarcane bagasse by acid hydrolysis and functionalized with adipic acid. Nanocomposites were prepared with different concentration of CNCs (0.8, 1.5, and 2.3 wt% CNC) by solution-casting method and then were covered with silver thin film by magnetron sputtering. The results showed that the surface modification increased the degree of crystallinity of nanocrystals from 51% to 56%, decreasing their length and diameter. Moreover, AFM-IR spectroscopy revealed that the modified CNCs were covered by adipic acid molecules, improving the dispersion of nanocrystals in PBAT. Well-dispersed modified CNCs acted as heterogeneous nuclei for crystallization of PBAT, and increased the storage modulus of the polymer by more than 200%. These improvements in thermal and mechanical properties of CNC-based PBAT associated with the decrease of 56% in the Escherichia coli biofilm formation on nanocomposites (antibacterial properties) qualify the CNC/PBAT nanocomposites covered with silver thin films to be used as food packaging.

Lidar Observations in South America. Part I - Mesosphere and Stratosphere

    Get PDF
South America covers a large area of the globe and plays a fundamental function in its climate change, geographical features, and natural resources. However, it still is a developing area, and natural resource management and energy production are far from a sustainable framework, impacting the air quality of the area and needs much improvement in monitoring. There are significant activities regarding laser remote sensing of the atmosphere at different levels for different purposes. Among these activities, we can mention the mesospheric probing of sodium measurements and stratospheric monitoring of ozone, and the study of wind and gravity waves. Some of these activities are long-lasting and count on the support from the Latin American Lidar Network (LALINET). We intend to pinpoint the most significant scientific achievements and show the potential of carrying out remote sensing activities in the continent and show its correlations with other earth science connections and synergies. In Part I of this chapter, we will present an overview and significant results of lidar observations in the mesosphere and stratosphere. Part II will be dedicated to tropospheric observations

Bull semen varibles after experimental exposure with Bovine Herpesvirus type 5

The influence of Bovine Herpesvirus type 5 (BoHV-5) infection on semen variables and sperm morphology collected from healthy bulls with no reproductive disorder was evaluated in ten ejaculates distributed into two experimental groups: group 1, bull semen exposed to 10(2.3) (tissue culture infectious dose) TCID(50)/50 mu l of a Brazilian strain of BoHV-5 (US9/BR/2007; GU9457818) and group II, unexposed bull control semen. After experimental infection, the semen was frozen-thawed prior to computerized analysis (CASA) of sperm motility and movement. Also analyzed were sperm phosphatidylserine transposition, acrosomal integrity, mitochondrial function, plasma membrane integrity and Annexin V expression. Viable BoHV-5 particles and their DNA were detected in infected semen after virus isolation and in situ hybridization (ISH) assay. The ISH revealed the BoHV-5 US9 gene in the acrosome and tail of infected spermatozoa. The only remarkable differences between groups land II were the sperm kinetic variables, whereby infected sperm had a lesser mean velocity (VAP) and curvilinear velocity (VCL) values as compared to controls (P <= 0.05). However, the straightness coefficient (STR) and beat cross frequency (BCF) values were higher in infected sperm. These results indicate that BoHV-5 can be found in infected sperm but induces no functional and morphological damage even after freeze-thawing, and, importantly, BoHV-5 can be spread via in vitro and in vivo reproductive biotechnology procedures. Neonatal fluoxetine exposure delays reflex ontogeny, somatic development and food intake similarly in male and female rats

    No full text
Serotonin (5-HT) acts as a neuromodulator and plays a critical role in brain development. Changes in 5-HT signaling during the perinatal period can affect neural development and may result in behavioral changes in adulthood. However, further investigations are necessary including both sexes to study possible differences. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of neonatal treatment with fluoxetine on the development of male and female offsprings. The animals were divided into four groups according to sex and treatment. The experimental groups received fluoxetine at 10 mg/kg (1μl/g bw) and the animals of control group received saline solution 0.9% (1μl/g bw) from postnatal days 1-21. In the neonatal period were recorded: reflex ontogeny, somatic development, physical features and food intake. In the postnatal period (until day 31) were recorded: body weight and post-weaning food intake. Chronic administration of fluoxetine in the neonatal period caused a delay in the reflex ontogeny and somatic development, reduction of lactation and post-weaning bodyweight, and post-weaning food intake in rats. No difference was found between the sexes. These changes reaffirm that serotonin plays an important role in regulating the plasticity of the brain during early development period, but without sex differences. The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page.
