Nowadays, quality of life survey is one of the primary concerns in urban planning and management. Its evaluation and monitoring became a challenge that decision makers have to lead with. This paper presents the work that conduced to the development of an information system to evaluate and monitor university campi quality of the life. The system embodies two main functions: to inform, allowing any user to know how has evolved the quality of life on campus; to be a decision support tool, mainly for facilities planning and management, taking advantages of users participation, through individual evaluations, in getting a global quality of life users perception. The results of the application of that system in case study are also presented

Multichannel detection of acoustic emissions and localization of the source by using a hybrid programming system

    Get PDF
The detection of acoustic emissions with multiple channels and different kind of sensors (ultrasound electronic sensors and optical fiber sensors) is presented. The source localization based on the times of arrival is also carried out and different strategies for solving the location equations are compared. The most efficient strategy in terms of computational and complexity costs versus performance has been selected and the error propagation is analyzed. The errors of the acoustic emission source location (localization process) are evaluated from the errors of the times of arrival (detection process). For that, a hybrid programming architecture is proposed. It is formed by a virtual instrumentation system for the acquisition and the detection of multiple acoustic channels and an algorithms-oriented programming system for the implementation of the localization techniques (back-propagation and multiple-source separation algorithms could also be implemented in this system). Finally the communication between both systems is performed by a packet transfer protocol that allows remote operation (e.g. a local monitoring and a remote analysis and diagnosis). This work has been supported by the Spanish National Ministry of Science and Innovation, under the R&D project No. DPI 2009-14628-C03-01 and the scholarship FPI No. BES-2010-042083

Campus quality of life information system : a case study applied to the University of Minho

When analysing characteristics, form, dimension and organisation of university campi, it can be concluded that they can be seen as urban spaces. This fact is often enhanced due to their location: in urban areas or even merged in the city. In this context, a model for the evaluation of the quality of life based on concepts for urban spaces is presented in this paper. Its main purpose is to provide conceptual bases for the implementation of a decision support system that evaluates the university campus quality of life. The process integrates users’ perception and provides the ability to assess the impact of future interventions on the campus quality of life using scenarios. Those scenarios can be created by a tool included in the system and enabled to express through indicators values updates corresponding to possible changes in campus. The evaluation of the quality of life variation that would result from the scenario execution will serve as a decision support tool for campus management when studying several possibilities

Developments in preparation and dyeing of CORONA discharged cellulosic materials

    Get PDF
The preparation and dyeing of cellulosic fabrics hás important problems such as uniformity of aspect, cleaning efficiency, level of bleaching, conformity and fastness of colours, and ecological impact. Combination of preparation processes can give optimal solutions, regarding economy and ecology, especially if superior quality items are achieved in final products. In fact, high standards concerning whiteness, starch removal and hidrophilicity are considered a good basis for leveled, cleaner and intense dyeing. A better white basis, escellent hidrophilicity and enough removal of impurities are obtained if desizing is omitted and a CORONA discharge is made over dry grey material. Exhaustion dyeings with different classes of direct dyes show similar behavior concerning the positive influence of the discharge in the intensity of colours and their fastness. Good penetration of dyes in coronised cotton materials is assured and consequently a good fastness is abtained

    Get PDF

Instrumentation system for location of partial discharges using acoustic detection with piezoelectric transducers and optical fiber sensors

    Get PDF
In this paper, a multichannel instrumentation system for the location of partial discharges (PDs) in power transformers is presented. It is based on the detection of the acoustic emissions from PDs in oil with several piezoelectric (PZT) and fiber optic sensors. An acoustic detection and location approach is proposed based on a time reference given by one fiber optic sensor installed inside the tank and the times of arrival to several PZT sensors installed outside the tank (two in front of each phase windings of a three phase transformer for a typical application). The signal processing includes digital denoising techniques and time-difference lookup table-based 3-D location algorithms; these algorithms have been implemented with virtual instrumentation. The system is tested in an acoustic experimental setup and the location accuracy is evaluated. Finally, the error propagation from the times of arrival and the influence of the number of sensors and their sites in the 3-D location algorithm were analyzed. This work was supported in part by the Spanish National Ministry of Science and Innovation under the Project DPI 2009-14628-C03-01 and in part by the scholarship FPI under Grant BES-2010-04208
