    Quantum phases of a qutrit

    We consider various approaches to treat the phases of a qutrit. Although it is possible to represent qutrits in a convenient geometrical manner by resorting to a generalization of the Poincare sphere, we argue that the appropriate way of dealing with this problem is through phase operators associated with the algebra su(3). The rather unusual properties of these phases are caused by the small dimension of the system and are explored in detail. We also examine the positive operator-valued measures that can describe the qutrit phase properties.Comment: 6 page

    Influence of Teaching Style on Physical Education Adolescents’ Motivation and Health-Related Lifestyle

    According to various WHO reports in 2018, a large number of adolescents worldwide are either overweight or obese. This situation is the result of not following a healthy and balanced diet, combined with a lack of practice of physical activity. In this sense, Physical Education classes could help to solve the problem. The present study seeks to analyze the relationship between the role of the teacher in relation to the structural dimensions of the PE teaching environment and the basic psychological needs and self-motivation of adolescents as determinants of their behaviors related to eating habits and the practice of physical activity. A total of 1127 secondary school adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 participated in this study. Questionnaires were used: Perceived Autonomy Support Scale, Psychologically Controlling Teaching Scale, Basic Psychological Needs in Physical Education, Frustration of Psychological Needs in PE context, Physical Activity Class Satisfaction Questionnaire, Perceived Locus of Causality Revised, and WHO’s Global school-based student health survey. A structural equations model was elaborated to explain the causal relationships between the variables. The results showed that autonomy support positively predicted the three structural dimensions of PE classes, while, in contrast, they were negatively predicted by psychological control. The three structural dimensions positively predicted the satisfaction of psychological needs and negatively predicted the thwarting of psychological needs. Self-determined motivation was positively predicted by the satisfaction of psychological needs and negatively predicted by the thwarting of psychological needs. Finally, self-determined motivation positively predicted healthy eating habits and the practice of physical activity and negatively predicted unhealthy eating habits. Certainly, the results obtained in this study support the postulates of the self-determination theory, demonstrating the predictability of PE class context towards the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits, such as a proper diet and the regular practice of physical activity

    A measurable entanglement criterion for two qubits

    We propose a directly measurable criterion for the entanglement of two qubits. We compare the criterion with other criteria, and we find that for pure states, and some mixed states, it coincides with the state's concurrency. The measure can be obtained with a Bell state analyser and the ability to make general local unitary transformations. However, the procedure fails to measure the entanglement of a general mixed two-qubit state.Comment: 5 page

    Photometric candidate selection and spectroscopic confirmation of new PNe and SySts in the Galactic plane

    About 3,500 planetary nebulae (PNe) are currently known in the Milky Way, which shows a great discrepancy with the expected number for these objects, regardless of the reference used, 3359×10333-59 \times 10^{3}. The same holds for symbiotic stars (SySts) as well, since the expected number in the Galaxy (3400×1033-400 \times 10^{3}) differs considerably from the amount of known ones (approximately 300). Studies on PNe and SySts are of great importance because they provide vital clues to the understanding of the late-stage of stellar evolution for low-to-intermediate mass stars. In addition, these classes of objects play a large role in the chemical evolution of the Galaxy through the ejection of their material to the interstellar medium (ISM), enriching it with the various chemical elements produced throughout their evolution. This project aims to contribute to the detection of new PNe and SySts in the Galaxy, thus decreasing the discrepancy between the observed and theoretical populations. Using simultaneously the third data release from the optical survey VPHAS+ (The VST Photometric Hα\alpha Survey of the Southern Galactic Plane and Bulge), which maps the southern hemisphere of the Galaxy's plane with the rr, ii, and H{α\alpha} filters, and the IR colors of the catalog AllWISE (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer + The Two Micron All Sky Survey), we end up with a number of PN and SySt candidates. Subsequently, we confirm the nature of these objects through spectroscopic observations at the SOAR telescope (Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope). So far, we have selected PN candidates and performed the spectroscopic follow-up of 8 of them. In this presentation we show the project's preliminary results, which consist of the discovery of at least one new planetary nebula, and other emission-line sources still to be confirmed either as PN or SySt.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, proceedings of the XLV annual meeting of the Brazilian Astronomical Societ

    Physical Education Classes as a Precursor to the Mediterranean Diet and the Practice of Physical Activity

    Physical activity and a healthy, balanced diet are remaining unresolved issues among young people. According to the World Health Organization, young people do not get enough exercise during the week, and physical education classes are the best way to promote healthy habits. This study aims to analyze how the role of the teacher influences the frustration of psychological needs, coping strategies, motivation, and the adoption of healthy eating habits through the Mediterranean diet and the regular practice of physical activity. The study involved 1031 boys and 910 girls between the ages of 13 and 18. To explain the relationships between the different variables included in this study, a model of structural equations has been developed. The results showed that autonomy support negatively predicted the frustration of four psychological needs. The failure to meet four psychological needs negatively predicted resilience. Likewise, resilience positively predicted autonomous motivation, and this positively predicted the Mediterranean diet and the practice of physical activity. Thus, the results obtained in the present study are in line with those of various studies wherein physical education classes were seen to help consolidate healthy living habits

    Continuum percolation of simple fluids: Energetic connectivity criteria

    During the last few years, a number of works in computer simulation have focused on the clustering and percolation properties of simple fluids based in an energetic connectivity criterion proposed long ago by T.L. Hill [J. Chem. Phys. 23, 617 (1955)]. This connectivity criterion appears to be the most appropriate in the study of gas-liquid phase transition. So far, integral equation theories have relayed on a velocity-averaged version of this criterion. We show, by using molecular dynamics simulations, that this average strongly overestimates percolation densities in the Lennard-Jones fluid making unreliable any prediction based on it. Additionally, we use a recently developed integral equation theory [Phys. Rev. E 61, R6067 (2000)] to show how this velocity-average can be overcome.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure

    Análisis espacial de terrenos afectados por minería de suelos en un área del partido de La Plata a partir de índices de vegetación

    La actividad extractiva vinculada a la minería de suelos data desde hace más de 100 años en diversos Partidos dentro de la Provincia de Buenos Aires. En el Partido de La Plata, esta actividad ha implicado la pérdida del “capital natural”, en las áreas/cuencas de producción destinadas al abastecimiento de alimentos a los centros urbanos más próximos. Poder cuantificar las áreas degradadas por esta actividad en los entornos de la Ciudad de La Plata y de las grandes ciudades de la Provincia de Buenos Aires contribuiría a la valoración de la problemática, coadyuvando al diseño de estrategias para la protección del recurso y la remediación de los pasivos ambientales generados. A partir de esta situación se cree oportuno poder desarrollar una metodología que permita la identificación, evaluación y valoración de estas áreas degradadas. Las técnicas de análisis espacial y teledetección, en este caso, permiten tener acceso al conocimiento de las situaciones y estado en el que se encuentran las coberturas desde un punto de vista espectral, pudiéndose delimitar de manera preliminar los terrenos que presenten signos de haber sido removido su horizonte superficial, ya sea agentes erosivos naturales o por actividad minera (Fraziers et al., 1989; De Vliegher, 1990; Dubocq et al., 1991). El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo confeccionar Índices de Vegetación (SAVI y NDVI) para 2 momentos del año contrastantes entre sí (otoño – primavera) en un área piloto del Partido de La Plata, con el fin de determinar cubiertas correspondientes a suelos afectados por minería (Suelos Decapitados). A su vez se pretende obtener un valor numérico standard de índice que pueda ser representativo de la situación de decapitación

    Role of a Fur homolog in iron metabolism in Nitrosomonas europaea

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In response to environmental iron concentrations, many bacteria coordinately regulate transcription of genes involved in iron acquisition via the ferric uptake regulation (Fur) system. The genome of <it>Nitrosomonas europaea</it>, an ammonia-oxidizing bacterium, carries three genes (NE0616, NE0730 and NE1722) encoding proteins belonging to Fur family.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the three <it>N. europaea fur </it>homologs, only the Fur homolog encoded by gene NE0616 complemented the <it>Escherichia coli </it>H1780 <it>fur </it>mutant. A <it>N. europaea fur:kanP </it>mutant strain was created by insertion of kanamycin-resistance cassette in the promoter region of NE0616 <it>fur </it>homolog. The total cellular iron contents of the <it>fur:kanP </it>mutant strain increased by 1.5-fold compared to wild type when grown in Fe-replete media. Relative to the wild type, the <it>fur:kanP </it>mutant exhibited increased sensitivity to iron at or above 500 μM concentrations. Unlike the wild type, the <it>fur:kanP </it>mutant was capable of utilizing iron-bound ferrioxamine without any lag phase and showed over expression of several outer membrane TonB-dependent receptor proteins irrespective of Fe availability.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our studies have clearly indicated a role in Fe regulation by the Fur protein encoded by <it>N. europaea </it>NE0616 gene. Additional studies are required to fully delineate role of this <it>fur </it>homolog.</p
