    Second-century BC Delos saw the creation of more than two dozen endowments, by men and women, Delians and aliens, and, most famously, Hellenistic royalty or their agents. Scholars agree that these underwrote festivals (mostly eponymous: The Antigoneia, Eutycheia, Philonideia, Ptolemaieia, Stesileia, etc.), and have focused on the political motivation, purpose, and effects of the dozen or so royal specimens. This paper suggests that we have misconstrued the Greek of the Delian accounts; that the endowments did not fund eponymous festivals per se, but modest recurring ritual that was established on the occasion of significant family events, especially marriage and death; that this peculiar Delian phenomenon has more to say about authentic piety than grand politics, and more in common with Hellenistic family cult than festival culture

    Novel magnetic phase in a weakly ordered spin-1/2 chain antiferromagnet Sr2_2CuO3_3

    We present the magnetic phase diagram of a spin-1/2 chain antiferromagnet Sr2_2CuO3_3 studied by ultrasound phase-sensitive detection technique. We observe an enhanced effect of external magnetic field on the ordering temperature of the system, which is in the extreme proximity to the quantum critical point. Inside the N\'eel ordered phase, we detect an additional field-induced continuous phase transition, which is unexpected for a collinear Heisenberg antiferromagnet. This transition is accompanied by softening of magnetic excitation mode observed by electron-spin resonance, which can be associated with a longitudinal (amplitude) mode of the order parameter in a weakly-coupled system of spin-1/2 chains. These results suggest transition from a transverse collinear antiferromagnet to an amplitude-modulated spin density wave phase induced by magnetic field.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    The Construction of Conforming-to-shape Truss Lattice Structures via 3D Sphere Packing

    Truss lattices are common in a wide variety of engineering applications, due to their high ratio of strength versus relative density. They are used both as the interior support for other structures, and as structures on their own. Using 3D sphere packing, we propose a set of methods for generating truss lattices that fill the interior of B-rep models, polygonal or (trimmed) NURBS based, of arbitrary shape. Once the packing of the spheres has been established, beams between the centers of adjacent spheres are constructed, as spline based B-rep geometry. We also demonstrate additional capabilities of our methods, including connecting the truss lattice to (a shell of) the B-rep model, as well as constructing a tensor-product trivariate volumetric representation of the truss lattice - an important step towards direct compatibility for analysis.RYC-2017-2264

    Fission half-lives of super-heavy nuclei in a microscopic approach

    A systematic study of 160 heavy and super-heavy nuclei is performed in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach with the finite range and density dependent Gogny force with the D1S parameter set. We show calculations in several approximations: with axially symmetric and reflexion symmetric wave functions, with axially symmetric and non-reflexion symmetric wave functions and finally some representative examples with triaxial wave functions are also discussed. Relevant properties of the ground state and along the fission path are thoroughly analyzed. Fission barriers, Qα_\alpha-factors and lifetimes with respect to fission and α\alpha-decay as well as other observables are discussed. Larger configuration spaces and more general HFB wave functions as compared to previous studies provide a very good agreement with the experimental data.Comment: 26 pages, 15 figure

    Spin-Vacancy-Induced Long-Range Order in a New Haldane-Gap Antiferromagnet

    Magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization and inelastic neutron scattering experiments are used to study the magnetic properties of a new S=1 quasi-1-dimensional antiferromagnet PbNi2V2O8. Inter-chain interactions are shown to be almost, but not quite, strong enough to destroy the nonmagnetic singlet ground state and the energy gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum. Substituting nonmagnetic Mg2+^{2+} (S=0) ions for Ni2+^{2+} (S=1) induces a magnetically ordered state at low temperatures. To our knowledge this is the first observation of doping-induced long-range order in a Haldane-gap system.Comment: 5 pages including 4 figure

    Left Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction in Rheumatoid Disease An Unrecognized Burden?

    ObjectivesThis study sought to ascertain whether left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) is more common among clinic patients with rheumatoid disease (RD) compared with the general population, and to assess the diagnostic utility of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP).BackgroundPatients with RD are at increased risk of ischemic heart disease. However, there are few large echocardiographic studies identifying cardiac dysfunction in RD. We hypothesized that LVSD would be more prevalent in RD patients than in the general population.MethodsA total of 226 hospital out-patients with RD (65% women) underwent clinical evaluation, electrocardiography (ECG), echocardiography, and plasma BNP assay (218 patients). Prevalence of LVSD was compared with local population estimates.ResultsDefinite LVSD (left ventricular ejection fraction <40%) occurred in 5.3% of the RD group: standardized prevalence ratio, 3.20; 95% confidence interval, 1.65 to 5.59. Median BNP values were higher in patients with LVSD compared with those without: 16.6 pmol/l versus 8.5 pmol/l, p < 0.005, although values between the two groups overlapped. One in nine patients with an abnormal ECG had definite LVSD.ConclusionsDefinite LVSD was three times more common in RD patients than in the general population. Given the prognostic benefits of treating LVSD, echocardiographic screening of RD patients with an abnormal ECG may be worthwhile
