Creation of large spatial fluctuations in neutrino asymmetry by neutrino oscillations
We consider active-sterile neutrino oscillations in the early universe in an
inhomogeneous isocurvature background. We show that very small initial baryonic
seed-inhomogeneities can trigger a growth of very large amplitude spatial
fluctuations in lepton asymmetry. Domains of varying asymmetry are observed to
persist for a long time despite dissipative effects. The space dependent
asymmetry profiles give rise to MSW-resonances within the domain boundaries,
enhancing dramatically the equilibration of the sterile neutrino species.
According to our one-dimensional toy-model, the effect is so strong that almost
the entire parameter space where exponential growth of asymmetry occurs would
be ruled out by nucleosynthesis.Comment: 1+21 pages, 3 figure
The war correspondent action hero (guest blog)
Probably the most dangerous role in modern journalism is that of the ‘War Correspondent’, but what does that title actually mean? Polis Summer School student Karl Sorri reports on a talk by BBC World Affairs Producer Stuart Hughes who has covered conflicts around the world
Physical origin of "chaoticity" of neutrino asymmetry
We consider the indeterminacy in the sign of the neutrino asymmetry generated
by active-sterile neutrino oscillations in the early universe. The dynamics of
asymmetry growth is discussed in detail and the indeterminacy in the final sign
of the asymmetry is shown to be a real physical phenomenon. Recently published
contradicting results are carefully considered and the underlying assumptions
leading to the disagreement are resolved.Comment: 12 pages, Latex, 4 eps figures, uses cite.st
Business Model Frameworks in IoT Context -- A Literature Review
Employing the Internet of Things (IoT) in business changes the way in which value is offered to customers. To enable and ensure effective value exchange, proper business models are required. In this literature review study (n=56), business model frameworks created for the IoT context were evaluated. The results show that although most of the frameworks emphasize the ecosystemic nature of IoT, even they still largely do not describe the connections, dynamics, and causality between the business model components. While IoT as such does not necessarily need a specific business model, the ecosystemic nature of IoT is bound to influence the business model, thus making IoT business models more integrative, inter-relational, and complex. The results also suggest that the ecosystem-level co-creation of business models needs to be emphasized and studied further
WAYFINDING AID FOR THE ELDERLY WITH MEMORY DISTURBANCES
A global increase in aging population, combined with a growing number of people with dementia, creates new challenges to develop guiding technology for people with memory disturbances in their daily activities. In this study we have tested the prototype of a wayfinding aid using predefined routes. The orientation advice was given through three modalities, visual, audio and tactile signals, two of which were used at a time. Nine subjects, aged 59–90 years (with a median age of 84 years) participated in the user study at a rehabilitation unit in Pyhäjärvi, Finland. Their severity of dementia ranged between mild and severe, and walking abilities ranged from “frail to hobby skier”. In addition, two elderly persons were recruited as control subjects. In most cases, the orientation with the wayfinding aid on predefined routes succeeded, with a few misinterpretations. The most common difficulties included: straying from the defined route, finding the right door, and the attractions of real-life context like other people. The severity of dementia didn’t seem to predict success in orientation with the wayfinding aid. Using the landmarks wasn’t as successful as using “left”, “right” and “go straight on” commands as the wayfinding advice
Effect of Transport Time of up to 12 Hours on Welfare of Cows and Bulls
The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of transport time up to 12 h on welfare of
bulls and cows. Cattle transport vehicle was used for the experiment. Sensors to measure temperature,
relative humidity and video camera to monitor behaviour were mounted in observation pen.
Eighteen measurements were performed during summer and winter for 4, 8, and 12 h transport
time with three replications. To determine cortisol, glucose, lactate, and creatine kinase concentrations,
blood samples were collected before and after transport from 80 bulls, 82 cows and 20
control animals. Cortisol concentration was generally inversely proportional to transport time (P
< 0.001). Glucose concentration for cows was the highest at 12 h and the lowest at 8 h and for bulls
it increased with transport time (P < 0.002). Lactate level generally correlated with transport time
(P < 0.001), but for bulls the highest and the lowest were at 8 and 4 h in winter. Creatine kinase
concentration positively correlated with transport time for bulls and cows but at different rates.
Loss of balance and swaying strongly correlated with transport time (P < 0.002). Based on behaviour,
stress hormones and pH values, an increase from 4 to 8 h had a higher effect than from 8 to
12 h transport time on welfare and subsequent meat quality
Lisäksi tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää EVL 52 h §:n erityisen veronkiertosäännöksen soveltamisedellytykset osakevaihtoihin. Tutkielma saa näkökulmia EU-oikeudesta käsitellen muun muassa maastapoistumisveroa sijoittumisvapauden kannalta sekä oikeuden väärinkäytön kiellon merkitystä osakevaihdon ja erityisen veronkiertosäännöksen soveltamisessa.
Tutkielma pyrkii vastaamaan kysymyksiin, mitkä ovat EVL 52 f §:n 1 momentin tarkoittaman osakevaihdon toteuttamisen edellytykset. Maastapoistumisveron osalta tutkielmassa pyritään vastaamaan kysymyksiin, millaisissa maastamuuttotilanteissa EVL 52 f §:n 3 ja 4 momentin tarkoittamat veroseuraamukset realisoituvat ja rajoittaako osakevaihdon maastapoistumisveroa koskeva säännös sijoittumisvapauden käyttämistä. Tutkielma sivuaa oikeuden väärinkäytön kiellon merkitystä osakevaihdossa ja pyrkii vastaamaan kysymyksiin, mikä on oikeuden väärinkäytön kiellon merkitys osakevaihdossa ja veronkiertosäännöksen soveltamisessa, ja miten oikeuden väärinkäytön kielto on otettava huomioon EVL 52 f §:n ja EVL 52 h §:n tulkinnassa. Erityisen veronkiertosäännöksen soveltamisedellytyksiä pyritään löytämään vastaamalla kysymykseen, milloin on ilmeistä, että osakevaihdon yksinomaisena tai yhtenä pääasiallisista tarkoituksista on ollut veron kiertäminen ja veron välttäminen EVL 52 h §:n tarkoittamalla tavalla.
Tutkielman tutkimusmetodina on lainoppi, jonka avulla tulkitaan ja systematisoidaan voimassa olevaa oikeutta. Tutkielman sivutuotteena voi muodostua de lege ferenda -tyyppisiä suosituksia lainsäädännön tulevaisuudesta. Tutkielma keskittyy vero-oikeudelliseen tutkimukseen sisältäen kuitenkin osia EU-vero-oikeudesta ja yhtiöoikeudesta.
Tutkielman johtopäätöksenä voidaan todeta, että ennen erityisen veronkiertosäännöksen soveltamisen tarkastelua, on tutkittava osakevaihdon soveltamisedellytykset. Mikäli järjestelyn katsotaan täyttävän osakevaihdon soveltamisedellytykset, voidaan tutkia erityisen veronkiertosäännöksen soveltumista. EVL 52 h §:ää sovellettaessa tutkittavaksi tulevat osakevaihdon osalta seuraavat seikat: vieraiden ja lain tarkoituksen vastaisten veroetujen muodostuminen, hyväksyttävät liiketaloudelliset perusteet, ja osakevaihdon tarkastelu kokonaisuutena osakevaihdon jälkeiset tapahtumat sekä unionin tuomioistuimen oikeuskäytäntö huomioon ottaen. Tutkielman johtopäätöksenä voidaan todeta keskeisimpiä oikeudellista punnintaa vaativia tilanteita erityisen veronkiertosäännöksen ja osakevaihdon välillä olevan vieraiden veroetujen ja liiketaloudellisten perusteiden tarkastelu, osinkoverotuksen minimointi holdingyhtiön nettovarallisuutta kasvattamalla, sarjatoimet sekä rahavastikkeen enimmäismäärä. Tutkielma ottaa kantaa erityisen veronkiertosäännöksen soveltamisesta osakevaihtoa koskeviin maastamuuttotilanteisiin. Tutkielman johtopäätöksenä todetaan osakevaihdon maastapoistumisveron sisältävän haasteita sijoittumisvapauden kannalta erityisesti tappioiden vähennyskelpoisuuden osalta
