    The Impact of Situational Constraints, Role Stressors, and Commitment on Employee Altruism

    This study investigated relations between 3 work-related stressors (role ambiguity, role conflict, and organizational constraints) and altruistic behavior in the workplace. It was predicted that each stressor would be negatively related to altruism and that these relations would be moderated by affective commitment (AC). Data from 144 incumbent-supervisor dyads revealed that all 3 stressors; were weakly and negatively related to altruism. Two of these relationships were moderated by AC, although not as predicted. Organizational constraints were positively related to altruism among those reporting high levels of AC but negatively related among those reporting low levels of AC. The pattern was exactly opposite for role conflict. Implications of these findings are discussed

In 1999 the National Youth Roundtable was established as the centrepiece of the Federal Government\u27s `Voices of Youth\u27 initiative, designed to go to the grass roots of the youth population and seek their participation on matters of policy development. This was to be the new interface between young people and the Australian government, replacing the peak body for youth affairs as a more effective participation mechanism

    Toxicity of mycotoxins for the rat pulmonary macrophage in vitro.

    The presence of mycotoxins in grains is well documented. Workers in grain handling occupations are commonly exposed to grain dust aerosols. Work in our laboratory has shown that T-2 toxin is highly toxic to rat alveolar macrophages in vitro, causing loss of viability, release of radiolabeled chromium, inhibition of macromolecular synthesis, inhibition of phagocytosis, and inhibition of macrophage activation. Similarly, patulin caused a significant release of radiolabeled chromium, decrease in ATP levels, significant inhibition of protein and RNA synthesis, and inhibition of phagocytosis. The data show that both T-2 toxin and patulin are highly toxic to rat alveolar macrophages in vitro. The data further suggest that the presence of these mycotoxins in airborne respirable dust might present a hazard to exposed workers

    Escalating manpower costs in developing systems has caused an increasing need for greater productivity in system development particularly in the analysis and design phases. Productivity in the system analysis phase can be increased with the use of computer- aided tools such as SPSL/SPSA for specifying system requirements and methodologies such as structured analysis. A structured analysis and documentation tool-the data flow diagram-allows an analyst to model and document a system with relative ease; however, the manual production of a data flow diagram is a time consuming process Combining the production of data flow diagrams with SPSL/SPSA produces a synergistic effect on the increases in productivity and ensures the use of standards andthe completenessof the diagram. This paperdescribes the problems and design of the systemMONDRIAN that generates data flow diagrams from an SPSA database. A variety of placement and routing algorithms that address the layout problem are discussed. The results of a preliminary study of the effectiveness of these algorithms and the adaptations required to improve and refine the prototype version of MONDRIAN are presented

    The Landscape of Family Business Outcomes: A Summary and Numerical Taxonomy of Dependent Variables

    To promote theoretical development in family business research, this research identified 327 dependent/outcome variables used in 257 empirical family business studies in 1998-2009. In four studies, the authors categorized outcome variables, developed a numerical taxonomy with seven clusters (performance, strategy, social and economic impact, governance, succession, family business roles, and family dynamics) plotted along two dimensions (business–family and short-term–long-term), validated their research, and identified missing outcome variables and variables that deserve more attention. Experts agree that family business roles, succession, and family dynamics make the family business domain unique and that noneconomic performance and family-specific topics deserve more attention
