    Regional Impacts of Tourism in Norway: Regional Satellite Accounting for Tourism as a basis for Regional Input-Output Modelling

    Economic Accounting is relatively well developed in Norway especially on the national level, but also on the regional level. Satellite accounting is used for focusing certain features of the economy, a.o. for tourism. A satellite account for tourism has been developed on the national level. Because the tourists'activities are regional activities, and because the impacts of tourism are significant not only on the national, but also on the regional level, a regional satellite account for tourism was developed by us during the past two years. Such satellite accounts on the regional level are, to our knowledge, not developed worldwide. The data can a.o. be used for moderating existing input-output models, so they can become more tailor-made for analysing impacts of tourists' economic activities. We propose a paper that focuses on our work - methods for regionalising satellite accounts for tourism, - indicators applied for this regionalisation, - how regional satellite account figures can be adapted into existing input-output models of the Norwegian economy (on the regional level), and - an example, showing how the regional satellite accounts for tourism can be used for simulating the regional impacts of tourism by the use of input-output techniques.

What has (and who have) been made newly in/visible by new media and technologies? Participants in this panel will present\ud and discuss aspects of their current research that shed light, in different ways, on questions of in/visibility in this, the Internet’s ‘Third Age’ (Wellman, 2011)

    On-line optical flow feedback for mobile robot localization/navigation

    Open-loop position estimation methods are commonly used in mobile robot applications. Their strength lies in the speed and simplicity with which an estimated position is determined. However, these methods can lead to inaccurate or unreliable estimates. Two methods are developed in this thesis. The first uses a single optical sensor and can accurately estimate position under ideal conditions and when wheel slip perpendicular to the axis of the wheel occurs. A second method which uses two optical sensors is developed which can accurately estimate position even when wheel slip parallel to the axis of the wheel occurs. Location of the optical sensors is investigated in order to minimize errors caused by inaccurate sensor readings. Finally, the method is implemented and tested using a potential field based navigation scheme. Estimates of position were found to be as accurate as dead-reckoning in ideal conditions and much more accurate in cases where kinematic violations occur

    The Clifton StrengthsFinder® is an online measure of personal talent that identifies where an individual’s greatest potential for building strengths exists. This paper describes a framework for strengths education in pharmacy which includes introductory, intermediate and advanced levels of learning. The use of the StrengthsFinder® assessment and supporting workshops aids student pharmacists, pharmacy residents and practitioners in identifying and refining their talents and connecting talents to roles in the profession. Additional learning strategies support a learner’s progression to intermediate and advanced levels of learning, which focus on the application of strengths in teams, leadership, and organizational development. By articulating and recognizing levels of learning around strengths-related content and skills, strong instructional design is fostered. Optimal design includes development of a sequence of learning opportunities delivered over time, a roll-out plan and consideration of the instructional resources required

    Instructional design and assessment: Student leadership retreat focusing on a commitment to excellence

    Objective. To design and evaluate a student leadership retreat focused on: leadership regardless of position or title, the need for passionate commitment to excellence, the importance of teamwork, and the value of self-reflection. Design. Students in their second, third, and fourth year of a doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) program were invited to participate in an off-campus leadership retreat that combined organized learning activities and social/networking opportunities. Retreat content utilized didactic, experiential, and self-directed learning activities. Assessment. Forty-two students participated in the retreat and were surveyed pre-and post-retreat. A student-led group evaluation and course evaluations were also utilized. Responses on the post-retreat evaluation suggested an increased belief in their ability to influence change and an enhanced awareness of the role of self-reflection in creating excellence in the profession. Conclusion. An off-campus overnight retreat has value in challenging student perceptions about leadership and promoting reflection on their personal role in leading change within the profession Continued exploration and development of this format is warranted for commitment to excellence programming and also for additional leadership topics and audiences

Perturbation of these cues underlies diverse pathologies, including osteoarthritis, cardiovascular disease and cancer. However, the molecular mechanisms that establish tissue-specific material properties and link them to healthy tissue function are unknown. We show that Runx2, a key lineage-specific transcription factor, regulates the material properties of bone matrix through the same transforming growth factor-beta (TGFbeta)-responsive pathway that controls osteoblast differentiation. Deregulated TGFbeta or Runx2 function compromises the distinctly hard cochlear bone matrix and causes hearing loss, as seen in human cleidocranial dysplasia. In Runx2(+/-) mice, inhibition of TGFbeta signalling rescues both the material properties of the defective matrix, and hearing. This study elucidates the unknown cause of hearing loss in cleidocranial dysplasia, and demonstrates that a molecular pathway controlling cell differentiation also defines material properties of extracellular matrix. Furthermore, our results suggest that the careful regulation of these properties is essential for healthy tissue functio

    Work stress and loss of years lived without chronic disease : an 18-year follow-up of 1.5 million employees in Denmark

    We aimed to examine the association between exposure to work stress and chronic disease incidence and loss of chronic disease-free life years in the Danish workforce. The study population included 1,592,491 employees, aged 30-59 in 2000 and without prevalent chronic diseases. We assessed work stress as the combination of job strain and effort-reward imbalance using job exposure matrices. We used Cox regressions to estimate risk of incident hospital-diagnoses or death of chronic diseases (i.e., type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure, and dementia) during 18 years of follow-up and calculated corresponding chronic disease-free life expectancy from age 30 to age 75. Individuals working in occupations with high prevalence of work stress had a higher risk of incident chronic disease compared to those in occupations with low prevalence of work stress (women: HR 1.04 (95% CI 1.02-1.05), men: HR 1.12 (95% CI 1.11-1.14)). The corresponding loss in chronic disease-free life expectancy was 0.25 (95% CI - 0.10 to 0.60) and 0.84 (95% CI 0.56-1.11) years in women and men, respectively. Additional adjustment for health behaviours attenuated these associations among men. We conclude that men working in high-stress occupations have a small loss of years lived without chronic disease compared to men working in low-stress occupations. This finding appeared to be partially attributable to harmful health behaviours. In women, high work stress indicated a very small and statistically non-significant loss of years lived without chronic disease.Peer reviewe
