Effects of experimental conditions and of addition of natural minerals on syngas production from lignin by oxy-gasification: comparison of bench- and pilot scale gasification
Gasification of spent lignin pellets was used to obtain a gas suitable for energy production. Spent lignin was obtained from second-generation cellulosic ethanol demo plant using wheat straw as feedstock. Gasification of lignin did not give rise to any feeding problems, thus no significant changes were needed in the existing gasification installation. The rise of temperature and steam flow rate favoured the formation of H2, while hydrocarbons (CnHm) and tar contents decreased. The increase of equivalent ratio (ER) also decreased hydrocarbons and tar contents, but syngas higher heating value (HHV) was reduced. The use of natural minerals improved lignin gasification. The presence of dolomite led to the highest H2 and to the lowest CnHm and tar contents. Results obtained at bench-scale were confirmed at pilot-scale, as similar trends were obtained. However, as the residence time in pilot gasifier was higher, greater gas yields with higher H2 and CH4 concentrations were obtained, while tar contents decreased. After syngas hot cleaning and upgrading, the final syngas composition showed to be suitable for a wide range of applications (e.g. energy production and synthesis of chemicals), since it was substantially enriched in hydrogen, whereas tar and heavier gaseous hydrocarbons were completely destroyed

Enhancement of Antiferromagnetic Correlations Induced by Nonmagnetic Impurities: Origin and Predictions for NMR Experiments
Spin models that have been proposed to describe dimerized chains, ladders,
two dimensional antiferromagnets, and other compounds are here studied when
some spins are replaced by spinless vacancies, such as it occurs by
doping. A small percentage of vacancies rapidly destroys the spin gap, and
their presence induces enhanced antiferromagnetic correlations near those
vacancies. The study is performed with computational techniques which includes
Lanczos, world-line Monte Carlo, and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group
methods. Since the phenomenon of enhanced antiferromagnetism is found to occur
in several models and cluster geometries, a common simple explanation for its
presence may exist. It is argued that the resonating-valence-bond character of
the spin correlations at short distances of a large variety of models is
responsible for the presence of robust staggered spin correlations near
vacancies and lattice edges. The phenomenon takes place regardless of the long
distance properties of the ground state, and it is caused by a ``pruning'' of
the available spin singlets in the vicinity of the vacancies. The effect
produces a broadening of the low temperature NMR signal for the compounds
analyzed here. This broadening should be experimentally observable in the
structurally dimerized chain systems

Optimal strategy to identify incidence of diagnostic of diabetes using administrative data
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Accurate estimates of incidence and prevalence of the disease is a vital step toward appropriate interventions for chronic disease like diabetes. A growing body of scientific literature is now available on producing accurate information from administrative data. Advantages of use of administrative data to determine disease incidence include feasibility, accessibility and low cost, but straightforward use of administrative data can produce biased information on incident cases of chronic disease like diabetes. The present study aimed to compare criteria for the selection of diabetes incident cases in a medical administrative database.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>An exhaustive retrospective cohort of diabetes cases was constructed for 2002 using the Canadian National Diabetes Surveillance System case definition (one hospitalization or two physician claims with a diagnosis of diabetes over a 2-year period) with the Quebec health service database. To identify previous occurrence of diabetes in the database, a five-year observation period was evaluated using retrograde survival function and kappa agreement. The use of NDSS case definition to identify incident cases was compared to a single occurrence of an ICD-9 code 250 in the records using the McNemar test.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Retrograde survival function showed that the probability of being a true incident case after a 5-year diabetes-free observation period was almost constant and near 0.14. Agreement between 10 years (maximum period) and 5 years and more diabetes-free observation periods were excellent (kappa > 0.9). Respectively 41,261 and 37,473 incident cases were identified using a 5-year diabetes-free observation period with NDSS definition and using a single ICD-9 code 250.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>A 5-year diabetes-free observation period was a conservative time to identify incident cases in an administrative database using one ICD-9 code 250 record.</p
The neglected epidemic—Risk factors associated with road traffic injuries in Mozambique: Results of the 2016 INCOMAS study

The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation had no role in the design of the study, the collection, analysis, and interpretation of the data and in the writing of the manuscript.In 2019, 93% of road traffic injury related mortality occurred in low- and middle-income countries, an estimated burden of 1.3 million deaths. This problem is growing; by 2030 road traffic injury will the seventh leading cause of death globally. This study both explores factors associated with RTIs in the central region of Mozambique, as well as pinpoints geographical “hotspots” of RTI incidence. A cross-sectional, population-level survey was carried out in two provinces (Sofala and Manica) of central Mozambique where, in addition to other variables, the number of road traffic injuries sustained by the household within the previous six months, was collected. Urbanicity, household ownership of a car or motorcycle, and socio-economic strata index were included in the analysis. We calculated the prevalence rate ratios using a generalized linear regression with a Poisson distribution, as well as the spatial prevalence rate ratio using an Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation. The survey included 3,038 households, with a mean of 6.29 (SD 0.06) individuals per household. The road traffic injury rate was 6.1% [95%CI 7.1%, 5.3%]. Urban residence was associated with a 47% decrease in rate of injury. Household motorbike ownership was associated with a 92% increase in the reported rate of road traffic injury. Higher socio-economic status households were associated with a 26% increase in the rate of road traffic injury. The rural and peri-urban areas near the “Beira corridor” (national road N6) have higher rates of road traffic injuries. In Mozambique, living in the rural areas near the “Beira corridor”, higher household socio-economic strata, and motorbike ownership are risk factors for road traffic injury.Peer reviewe
The novel Fh8 and H fusion partners for soluble protein expression in Escherichia coli : a comparison with the traditional gene fusion technology
The Escherichia coli host system is an advantageous choice for simple and inexpensive recombinant protein production but it still presents bottlenecks at expressing soluble proteins from other organisms. Several efforts have been taken to overcome E. coli limitations, including the use of fusion partners that improve protein expression and solubility. New fusion technologies are emerging to complement the traditional solutions. This work evaluates two novel fusion partners, the Fh8 tag (8 kDa) and the H tag (1 kDa), as solubility enhancing tags in E. coli and their comparison to commonly used fusion partners. A broad range comparison was conducted in a small-scale screening and subsequently scaled-up. Six difficult-to-express target proteins (RVS167, SPO14, YPK1, YPK2, Frutalin and CP12) were fused to eight fusion tags (His, Trx, GST, MBP, NusA, SUMO, H and Fh8). The resulting protein expression and solubility levels were evaluated by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis before and after protein purification and after tag removal. The Fh8 partner improved protein expression and solubility as the well-known Trx, NusA or MBP fusion partners. The H partner did not function as a solubility tag. Cleaved proteins from Fh8 fusions were soluble and obtained in similar or higher amounts than proteins from the cleavage of other partners as Trx, NusA or MBP. The Fh8 fusion tag therefore acts as an effective solubility enhancer, and its low molecular weight potentially gives it an advantage over larger solubility tags by offering a more reliable assessment of the target protein solubility when expressed as a fusion protein.The financial support of the EMBL Heidelberg, Germany and Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia (FCT), Portugal, is acknowledged: the fellowship SFRH/BD/46482/2008 to Sofia J. Advances in quantum metrology
The statistical error in any estimation can be reduced by repeating the measurement and averaging the results. The central limit theorem implies that the reduction is proportional to the square root of the number of repetitions. Quantum metrology is the use of quantum techniques such as entanglement to yield higher statistical precision than purely classical approaches. In this Review, we analyse some of the most promising recent developments of this research field and point out some of the new experiments. We then look at one of the major new trends of the field: analyses of the effects of noise and experimental imperfections
