    Multiframe Scene Flow with Piecewise Rigid Motion

    We introduce a novel multiframe scene flow approach that jointly optimizes the consistency of the patch appearances and their local rigid motions from RGB-D image sequences. In contrast to the competing methods, we take advantage of an oversegmentation of the reference frame and robust optimization techniques. We formulate scene flow recovery as a global non-linear least squares problem which is iteratively solved by a damped Gauss-Newton approach. As a result, we obtain a qualitatively new level of accuracy in RGB-D based scene flow estimation which can potentially run in real-time. Our method can handle challenging cases with rigid, piecewise rigid, articulated and moderate non-rigid motion, and does not rely on prior knowledge about the types of motions and deformations.     Hormonal control of the renal immune response and antibacterial host defense by arginine vasopressin

    Ascending urinary tract infection (UTI) and pyelonephritis caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) are very common infections that can cause severe kidney damage. Collecting duct cells, the site of hormonally regulated ion transport and water absorption controlled by vasopressin, are the preferential intrarenal site of bacterial adhesion and initiation of inflammatory response. We investigated the effect of the potent V2 receptor (V2R) agonist deamino-8-D-arginine vasopressin (dDAVP) on the activation of the innate immune response using established and primary cultured collecting duct cells and an experimental model of ascending UTI. dDAVP inhibited Toll-like receptor 4–mediated nuclear factor κB activation and chemokine secretion in a V2R-specific manner. The dDAVP-mediated suppression involved activation of protein phosphatase 2A and required an intact cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator Cl− channel. In vivo infusion of dDAVP induced a marked fall in proinflammatory mediators and neutrophil recruitment, and a dramatic rise in the renal bacterial burden in mice inoculated with UPECs. Conversely, administration of the V2R antagonist SR121463B to UPEC-infected mice stimulated both the local innate response and the antibacterial host defense. These findings evidenced a novel hormonal regulation of innate immune cellular activation and demonstrate that dDAVP is a potent modulator of microbial-induced inflammation in the kidney

    Urinary tract infection inducing stones: some clinical and chemical data

    Most papers on kidney stones arising from infection concentrate on the mineral struvite. In this contribution, we would like to call attention to other mineral phases such as highly carbonated calcium phosphate apatite, ammonium urate, and whitlockite, by presenting clinical and chemical data. We start with epidemiological data which emphasize the increase in the prevalence of kidney stones related to infection. Then we present a statistical analysis of more than 85,000 stones which have been analysed at the Laboratoire des Lithiases of Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris which gives insights regarding the link between urinary tract infection and struvite, carbonated calcium phosphate apatite (carbapatite), and also surprisingly whitlockite. Some information regarding the pathogenesis of kidney stones linked to infection, the nature of the bacteria which have been identified, and the approach to precisely analyse infrared spectra to identify struvite, carbapatite, and whitlockite, conclude this first part. To complete this clinical description, we describe the crystallographic structure and the chemistry of three relevant compounds namely carbonated calcium phosphate, struvite, and whitlockite. To conclude this second part, the dependence of crystallite morphology of struvite on pH and on the presence, or absence, of bacteria, is described. Based on clinical and chemical data, it is becoming clear that struvite is not the only mineral intimately related to renal infectious processes, but that whitlockite and carbapatite with a high carbonation rate are strongly associated with urinary tract infection as well

    La Libération est marquée par une très forte inquiétude des pouvoirs publics face à la délinquance juvénile et, plus largement, face à la jeunesse en difficulté ; elle révèle ainsi les fortes perturbations, voire les traumatismes subis au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Cette prise de conscience se traduit par un appareil législatif affirmant la primauté des conceptions éducatives sur les principes répressifs. Faute de moyens financiers notamment, l’État s’appuie au niveau national sur le secteur privé, disposant traditionnellement d’une certaine expérience dans le domaine et de réseaux prompts à soutenir ces œuvres. Or, la Seine-Inférieure, fortement ébranlée par les séquelles de la guerre, souffre, de surcroît, d’un équipement très insuffisant pour affronter les besoins en matière de prise en charge des mineurs délinquants et en danger. Toutefois, le milieu associatif réussit à rattraper son retard avec l’aide, en particulier, de personnalités locales dont le rôle est déterminant au sein des conseils d’administration. Tout au long de cette période, les établissements spécialisés affinent leurs méthodes et leurs projets pédagogiques grâce aux progrès de la formation des éducateurs et en s’ouvrant aux autres spécialistes de l’enfance. Dès les années 1970, l’évolution du profil des pensionnaires et les critiques qui se développent à l’encontre de l’hébergement classique, ainsi que le climat de restriction budgétaire mais aussi de décentralisation modifient de fait les rapports entre l’État et le secteur privé dont les caractéristiques ont désormais peu à voir avec les premières années d’expérimentation

    Identification of a Chromosome-Borne Expanded-Spectrum Class A β-Lactamase from Erwinia persicina

    From whole-cell DNA of an enterobacterial Erwinia persicina reference strain that displayed a penicillinase-related antibiotic-resistant phenotype, a β-lactamase gene was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. It encoded a clavulanic-acid-inhibited Ambler class A β-lactamase, ERP-1, with a pI value of 8.1 and a relative molecular mass of ca. 28 kDa. ERP-1 shared 45 to 50% amino acid identity with the most closely related enzymes, the chromosomally encoded enzymes from Citrobacter koseri, Kluyvera ascorbata, Kluyvera cryocrescens, Klebsiella oxytoca, Proteus vulgaris, Proteus penneri, Rahnella aquatilis, Serratia fonticola, Yersinia enterocolitica, and the plasmid-mediated enzymes CTX-M-8 and CTX-M-9. The substrate profile of the noninducible ERP-1 was similar to that of these β-lactamases.     Prognostic models for short-term annual risk of severe complications and mortality in patients living with type 2 diabetes using a national medical claim database

    International audienceAbstract Objective Prognostic models in patients living with diabetes allow physicians to estimate individual risk based on medical records and biological results. Clinical risk factors are not always all available to evaluate these models so that they may be complemented with models from claims databases. The objective of this study was to develop, validate and compare models predicting the annual risk of severe complications and mortality in patients living with type 2 diabetes (T2D) from a national claims data. Research design and methods Adult patients with T2D were identified in a national medical claims database through their history of treatments or hospitalizations. Prognostic models were developed using logistic regression (LR), random forest (RF) and neural network (NN) to predict annual risk of outcome: severe cardiovascular (CV) complications, other severe T2D-related complications, and all-cause mortality. Risk factors included demographics, comorbidities, the adjusted Diabetes Severity and Comorbidity Index (aDSCI) and diabetes medications. Model performance was assessed using discrimination (C-statistics), balanced accuracy, sensibility and specificity. Results A total of 22,708 patients with T2D were identified, with mean age of 68 years and average duration of T2D of 9.7 years. Age, aDSCI, disease duration, diabetes medications and chronic cardiovascular disease were the most important predictors for all outcomes. Discrimination with C-statistic ranged from 0.715 to 0.786 for severe CV complications, from 0.670 to 0.847 for other severe complications and from 0.814 to 0.860 for all-cause mortality, with RF having consistently the highest discrimination. Conclusion The proposed models reliably predict severe complications and mortality in patients with T2D, without requiring medical records or biological measures. These predictions could be used by payers to alert primary care providers and high-risk patients living with T2D
