Why are there still so few men within Early Years in primary schools: views from male trainee teachers and male leaders?

    Get PDF
One of the challenges facing the Early Years (EY) sector is how to encourage more male practitioners to counterbalance a largely feminised workforce. Using case studies of male trainees at different stages of their primary undergraduate Initial Teacher Training course at one university, we attempt to consider data why there is underrepresentation of men within the leadership strata in EY settings. Questionnaires and interviews were conducted with the male sample groups and male leaders in primary schools to gain an overview regarding gender stereotyping. Our findings suggest that male trainees enjoy working in the EY sector, but they need mentoring by strong leaders to help them overcome the perceived contextual barriers of male stereotypes in that setting. In conclusion, we consider some of these barriers of stereotypes, attitudes, values, beliefs existing and the actions needed in addressing such stereotypes if a long-lasting change is to happen

    Black Holes with Yang-Mills Hair

In Einstein-Maxwell theory black holes are uniquely determined by their mass, their charge and their angular momentum. This is no longer true in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory. We discuss sequences of neutral and charged SU(N) Einstein-Yang-Mills black holes, which are static spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat, and which carry Yang-Mills hair. Furthermore, in Einstein-Maxwell theory static black holes are spherically symmetric. We demonstrate that, in contrast, SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory possesses a sequence of black holes, which are static and only axially symmetric.Comment: LaTeX using epsf, aipproc, 10 pages including 9 ps figures, Talk held by Jutta Kunz at the Conference on Particles, Fields and Gravitation in Lodz, Poland, April 199

Superorbital Period in the High Mass X-ray Binary 2S 0114+650

We report the detection of a superorbital period in the high-mass X-ray binary 2S 0114+650. Analyses of data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) All-Sky Monitor (ASM) from 1996 January 5 to 2004 August 25 reveal a superorbital period of 30.7 +/- 0.1 d, in addition to confirming the previously reported neutron star spin period of 2.7 h and the binary orbital period of 11.6 d. It is unclear if the superorbital period can be ascribed to the precession of a warped accretion disc in the system.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, submitted to MNRAS 27th January 2005. Manuscript expanded to include discussion of evolution of periods, and hardness ratio variability. Number of figures increased from 5 to 9. Accepted for publication 19th December 200

Regulation And Supervision Of Sharia Banking According To Indonesian Legislation

The purpose of this research is to analyze the regulation and supervision of Sharia banking business  according to positive law in Indonesia, while the target is to be achieved, first, to analyze the regulation of Sharia banking supervision institution of according the positive law; Second, the existence of the institution of Sharia banking supervision, comparison of Sharia banking supervision that conducted by Bank Indonesia, the Financial Service Authority (FSA), the Board of Commissioners, and Board of Sharia Supervisory (BSS) according to Indonesian positive law. The gathering of legal materials conducted through the study of literature, then conducted a qualitative descriptive analysis to obtain a prescriptive conclusion deductively. The result of research shows that the regulation and supervision of Sharia banking in Indonesia at first is the authority of Bank Indonesia, then change judicially to become the authority of the FSA. The supervision of Sharia bank internally is also the authority of the Board of Commissioner and ShariaBSS as stipulated in the Banking Law of Sharia and Limited Company Law. Base on the result of research, there are inconsistent or conflict of norm about authority among institutions on regulation and supervision of banking. The problem can cause the legal uncertainty in the implementation of its functions, duties and authority of the FSA as an institution that is mandated by law in conducting regulation and supervision of banking. Therefore, it necessary to regulate comprehensively about Sharia banking supervision in an article or provision clearly and comprehensible, because of there are differences of the characteristics of Sharia banking activities

Gender Justice through Public Interest Litigation: Case Studies from India

    Get PDF
This Article examines the application of the Supreme Court of India\u27s enterprising Public Interest Litigation (PIL) mechanism to a subject of compelling global concern: violations of women\u27s rights. India is currently receiving much international attention for its dynamism and innovation on various fronts, yet the country also remains steeped in centuries-old norms and conventions. This tension is reflected in the decisions of the Supreme Court, which has assumed an active role in enforcing women\u27s rights through PIL but is sometimes limited in this regard by the complex cultural context in which it operates. Based on an analysis of Indian constitutional law, case studies of landmark Supreme Court decisions, and extensive interviews with stakeholders in India, the Author argues that the PIL vehicle has great potential for advancing gender justice. However, the success of this endeavor in a society that is rapidly evolving--yet still deeply patriarchal--will depend upon strategic mobilization by women\u27s rights advocates and committed efforts by the Court to enforce the rights of women, independent of mainstream opinion and within the boundaries of the separation-of-powers doctrine. If India can assume a leading role in advancing gender justice through its judiciary, its PIL mechanism could serve as an inspiring model for other constitutional courts and international human rights bodies

What does a globalized curriculum look like for diverse learners in primary schools?

    Get PDF
Children in our classrooms today come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and some have English as an Additional Language (EAL). Haslam et al define such children as ‘learners whose preferred language/s are not English and therefore add it to their language/s’ (2005: 97). The words diversity and globalization have numerous and contested meanings. We begin this article by looking at the multiple ways in which the ideas these terms express are conceptualized, especially for primary school children with EAL. We then explore globalization as a concept to see how it links with diversity so that relevant knowledge is generated using ideas from empirical and methodological studies. Finally, we consider how primary school leaders can bring a global dimension into their curriculum
