ThesisPhotography relies on a process of cooperation between subject and photographer. Try to establish from the outset the mutual understanding that you are working together to achieve a good result, if someone consents to pose for a portrait. Host people like the idea of a competent photographer taking pictures of them, and one can build on their underlying willingness to help. But you will have to overcome initial difficulties, to achieve a simple and natural likeness, because few people can pose formally for the camera without some tension. Largely, communication is a matter of getting people to relax in front of the camera. Try to bolster your subject's self-confidence. Be free with compliments and keep a conversation going. Hake positive suggestions instead of criticisms. If the sitter is frowning, it will disappear naturally, when a change of pose is encourage. Plan ahead, to inspire confidence in own ability, so that one do not appear undecided about backgrounds or lightning during the session. Have the equipment set up as intend to use it. Before the subject arrives, if possible, test any special lighting. The photographer will help the subject to feel comfortable and relax, by clearly establishing that he or she know what they are doing

ThesisThis script is an anthology of an extremely broad subject, by which the author tried to narrow it down by focusing specifically on still-life photography in the studio environment. Highlights regarding the evolution of photography, with reference to the chosen theme, the different applications that exist, and current equipment and techniques are discussed. A concise description of other famous photographers that influenced the author, and samples of their work, is provided. Twelve examples of the author's work, with detailed explanations of the creating thereof and a diagrammatic representation of each set-up for each of these photographs, are also included

Invisible queers : investigating the 'other' Other in gay visual cultures

    Get PDF
The apparent ‘invisibility’, or lack of representation of black men in contemporary mainstream gay visual cultures is the primary critical issue that the study engages with. The study presupposes that the frequency with which white men appear in popular representations of ‘gayness’ prevails over that of black men. In order to substantiate this assumption, this study analyses selected issues of the South African queer men’s lifestyle magazine Gay Pages. Gay visual cultures appear to simultaneously conflate ‘whiteness’ and normative homosexuality, while marginalising black gay men by means of positioning ‘blackness’ and ‘gayness’ as irreconcilable identity constructs. Images of the gay male ‘community’ disseminated by queer and mainstream media constantly offer stereotypical, distorted and race-biased notions of gay men, which ingrain the exclusive cultural equation of white men and ideal homomasculinity. The disclosure of racist and selectively homophobic ideologies, which seem to inform gay visual representation, is therefore the chief concern of the dissertation. By investigating selected images that ostensibly embody the complex cultural relationship between race and homomasculinity, the study addresses the following forms of visual representation: colonial representations of ‘blackness’; so-called gay ‘colonial’ representations; black self-representation; gay black self-representation; and contemporary representations of homomasculinity in advertisements and queer men’s lifestyle magazines such as Gay Pages. A genealogy of images is explored in order to illustrate the ways in which ‘blackness’ and ‘whiteness’ are respectively positioned as contradictory to and synonymous with dominant visual representations of homomasculinity in gay visual cultures. The hegemony of ‘whiteness’ in images sourced from colonial systems of representation, queer male art and commercial publicity, for example, are thus critiqued in order to address the various race-based prejudices that appear to be symptomatic of contemporary gay visual cultures. A comparison of open source and proprietary digital forensic software

    Get PDF
Scrutiny of the capabilities and accuracy of computer forensic tools is increasing as the number of incidents relying on digital evidence and the weight of that evidence increase. This thesis describes the capabilities of the leading proprietary and open source digital forensic tools. The capabilities of the tools were tested separately on digital media that had been formatted using Windows and Linux. Experiments were carried out with the intention of establishing whether the capabilities of open source computer forensics are similar to those of proprietary computer forensic tools, and whether these tools could complement one another. The tools were tested with regards to their capabilities to make and analyse digital forensic images in a forensically sound manner. The tests were carried out on each media type after deleting data from the media, and then repeated after formatting the media. The results of the experiments performed demonstrate that both proprietary and open source computer forensic tools have superior capabilities in different scenarios, and that the toolsets can be used to validate and complement one another. The implication of these findings is that investigators have an affordable means of validating their findings and are able to more effectively investigate digital media

Phytoplankton of the Southern Agulhas Large Marine Ecosystem (sACLME)

    Get PDF
The southern Agulhas Large Marine Ecosystem (sACLME) consists of the greater Agulhas Current system, including the areas influenced by the Agulhas Current, the Agulhas Shelf, Agulhas Bank, Agulhas Retroflection as well as the Agulhas Return Current. Four biogeographical regions were identified within the sACLME and the composition of the phytoplankton communities and the associated physico-chemical variables in each were investigated. Water temperature and nitrate concentration were found to be the main drivers of the sACLME phytoplankton community. A total of 215 phytoplankton taxa were identified that were separated into two groups: the Agulhas Current group and the Southwest Indian Ocean Ridge group. The structure of the phytoplankton community was consistently homogeneous throughout the sACLME. Nutrient concentrations of the water varied, but nitrate was the most abundant source of nitrogen, especially in regions that were subjected to the upwelling of cold nutrient-rich water. The phytoplankton communities were significantly influenced by the availability and stoichiometry of the macronutrients nitrogen; phosphorus and silicon. The low mean N:P ratio of 5.5 is an indication that the waters of the sACLME are generally nitrogen limited, as is typical of oceanic systems. There is a change in phytoplankton cell size and functional groups within in the various water masses that are specific to certain biogeographical regions within the Agulhas Current system. It is clear that frontal systems may form barriers between phytoplankton communities

Derrida se siening van dekonstruksie is in ag geneem tydens die ontleding van die verskynsel van agtergrondverwante aspekte wat die skoolhoof se potensiële werksaamhede beïnvloed.ENGLISH SUMMARY : The role the school principal as leader and manager of a school plays has undergone significant changes over time – not only in South Africa, but also internationally. From the literature it was clear that the responsibilities of school principals today are completely different from what they were three decades ago. Since 1990, dramatic changes have taken place in South Africa. Teaching was not spared this change, among others as a result of the potential it has for large-scale transformation. In the early nineties, the most important aim in terms of policy in the teaching sector was the redress of the racially divided education system in order to implement a uniform education system for all learners in the country. This potential solution for the above-mentioned problem was defined in policy documents in the expectation that their implementation would contribute to an improvement in teaching. The current study analysed the policies addressing the responsibilities of the school principal. The latest addition, the South African Standard for Principalship, as well as other documents such as the Personnel Administrative Measures and the South African Schools Act 84 of 1996, which all concern the activities of school principal, were considered. In addition, the way the change in the responsibilities of the school principal was experienced, as became clear from school principals’ perceptions, was also analysed. With reference to a careful literature study regarding the experiences of school principals in South Africa as well as abroad regarding daily challenges, the current study also considered possible opportunities for training that could address these challenges. As part of the case study employed during this research, the schools of the seven participating school principals were visited for a period of two weeks to gain first-hand experience of the way they go about performing their daily responsibilities and the influence policies have in this regard. The study found inter alia that the increase in policy documents did not have the desired effect on South African schools due to the complex position in which school principals find themselves. The school principal is supposed to take cognisance of policies (as mentioned), which outline his or her responsibilities, as well as all school-related policies, acts and white papers. Derrida’s idea of deconstruction was taken into account during the analysis of the phenomenon of context-related aspects, which have an influence on the school principal’s potential activities.Doctora
