Determinants of Participation in a Catastrophe Insurance Programme: Empirical Evidence from a Developing Country
The paper presents empirical evidence of the determinants of catastrophe insurance participation in one of the poorest and most disaster prone countries in the world. In a large-scale household survey carried out in 2006 we ask 3,000 residents in six different districts in Bangladesh facing various environmental risk exposure levels about their willingness to participate in a catastrophe insurance programme. Combining factors put forward in risk theory and economics, we estimate a model of insurance participation. We show that the household decision to participate in the insurance programme differs depending on both exogenous and endogenous risk exposure levels. As predicted by micro-economic theory, ability to pay, measured in terms of household income and access to credit, significantly affects insurance participation. Furthermore, among the sociodemographic factors investigated in this case study, respondent education and occupation are found to significantly influence household decision making. Our study suggests that low participation rates for catastrophe insurance in a developing country can be explained by high rates of illiteracy and limited access to credit.Natural disasters, catastrophe, insurance, participation, risk, Bangladesh, Consumer/Household Economics, Environmental Economics and Policy, International Development, Risk and Uncertainty, Q54,
Averting Behavior Framework for Perceived Risk of Yersinia enterocolitica Infections
The focus of this
research is to present a theoretical model of
averting actions that households take to avoid
exposure to Yersinia
enterocolitica in contaminated food.
The cost of illness approach only takes into
account the value of a cure, while the averting
behavior approach can estimate the value of
preventing the illness. The household, rather
than the individual, is the unit of analysis in
this model, where one household member is
primarily responsible for procuring
uncontaminated food for their family. Since
children are particularly susceptible and live
with parents who are primary decision makers for
sustenance, the designated household head makes
the choices that are investigated in this paper.
This model uses constrained optimization to
characterize activities that may offer
protection from exposure to Yersinia
enterocolitica contaminated food. A
representative household decision maker is
assumed to allocate family resources to maximize
utility of an altruistic parent, an assumption
used in most research involving economics of the
family
Knowledge of Arsenic in Drinking-water: Risks and Avoidance in Matlab, Bangladesh
Widespread contamination of arsenic in Bangladesh has been jeopardizing the health of millions of people. Residents of Matlab, Bangladesh, are among the millions at risk. Using bivariate models in the analysis of survey data, knowledge of health risks and avoidance of arsenic exposure in response to widespread contamination of arsenic for residents of Matlab were estimated. The models examined individuals' knowledge of an arsenic problem in the household and knowledge of specific illnesses caused by arsenic exposure. The likelihood of avoiding exposure to arsenic contamination was further examined. Results of the estimation showed that individual's knowledge of arsenic problems in the household was gathered through awareness campaigns and by word of mouth and that knowledge of illnesses was predicated on education, health, presence of children, elderly and young women. Adoption of avoidance measures was not affected by exposure to arsenic-information sources, but level of education had a statistically significant positive effect on the decision to avoid arsenic exposure. Lack of convenience of safe drinking-water practices lead people to persist in drinking arsenic-contaminated water
EKSPLORASI VISUAL SITU CANGKUANG DALAM FOTOGRAFI SENI
The facilities and services provided by photographic technology have made it easier for people to photograph. So photography is no longer a strange thing in the society. Photography has been able to replace manual illustrations, with its many advantages, such as the similarities and details of the objects it records. Photography is also necessary as a means of communication and photographic messages can also be a means of expression. When photography enters the arts, photography can provide dimensions that touch technical aesthetic aspects, as well as conceptual and thematic discourses. Exploration Situ Cangkuang will be the choice of visual objects Researchers in the creation of artistic photography. This is a form of aesthetic expression of researchers to make a real contribution to the awakening of art treasures that touch the aspect of tourism. The research method used is the qualitative descriptive method. In this method, the researcher performs a visualization and a photographic display supported by a subjective observation result.

Distributed detection of hydrogen and deuterium diffusion into a single-mode optical fiber with chirped-pulse phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry
For some infrastructures like oil and gas extraction boreholes or radioactive waste repositories, where distributed optical fiber sensors are employed to grant the safety of the facilities, the presence of gas species such as hydrogen or deuterium is one more relevant parameter to monitor. The possibility of employing the same kind of sensors for this purpose is of special interest, reducing the cost by employing a single interrogator, able to measure more than one parameter by simply employing an adequate sensing fiber. To meet this goal, we present here a sensor based on Chirped Pulse Phase sensitive Optical Time Domain Reflectometry, which is able to detect these species while they diffuse into the silica fiber core. Its ability to measure the induced change of its refractive index with a sensitivity around 10 8 has allowed determining hydrogen concentration in the silica core with precision in the order of 10 3 mol/m3 and spatial resolution ~6 m, while also providing an indirect measurement of the solubility of deuterium in a standard telecom-grade optical fiber.Commission of the European Communities JointMinisterio de EconomĂa y CompetitividadMinisterio de Ciencia, InnovaciĂłn y UniversidadesComunidad de Madri
