Impact of aerobic and anaerobic exercise training on oxidative stress and antioxidant defense in athletes
Exercise mediates an excessive free radical production leading to oxidative stress (OS). The body has natural antioxidant systems that help decrease OS, and these systems may be enhanced with exercise training. However, only a few studies have investigated the differences in resting OS and antioxidant capacity (AOC) between aerobically trained athletes (ET), anaerobically trained athletes (RT), and untrained individuals (UT). Therefore, this study sought to investigate the resting and postexercise OS and AOC in ET, RT, and UT. Sixty healthy young males (26.6±0.8 yr) participated in this study. Subjects were divided into three groups, ET, RT, and UT by distinct training background. Resting plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyls (PC) were not significantly different in ET, RT, and UT. However, MDA and PC were significantly increased following a graded exercise test (GXT) in UT but not in ET and RT. Resting total antioxidant capacity (TAC) levels and TAC were not different in ET, RT, and UT. Interestingly, TAC levels significantly decreased after the GXT in all groups. Additionally, UT showed lower post-exercise TAC levels compared to ET and RT. These results showed that ET, RT, and UT have similar OS and AOC at rest. However, both ET and RT have greater AOC against exercise mediated OS compared to UT. These findings may explain, at least in part, why both aerobic and anaerobic types of exercise training improve redox balance. However, it appears there is no specific exercise type effect in terms of redox balance
A Study on Charge Transport and Recombination Properties for Organic Photovoltaic Devices
Department of Energy Engineering (Energy Engineering)Now organic solar cells exhibited excellent device performance with power conversion efficiency over 16%. Therefore, it has a great potential for various practical application such as large-area flexible devices, indoor photovoltaic applications, colorful devices, and so on. Fundamental study is important for further development of organic solar cells. Charge carrier recombination and transport properties should be investigated which is related to the photocurrent and/or energy losses leading to poor device performance. This thesis deals with a relationship between solvent additives, morphology and bimolecular recombination by using diphenyl ether and diphenyl sulfide as universal and non-halogenated solvent processing additives.(Chapter 2 and 3) Diphenyl ether acts like theta solvent to photovoltaic polymers, helps to form ideal bulk-heterojunction film morphologies and suppress bimolecular charge recombination regardless photovoltaic polymers. Diphenyl sulfide exhibited fast and field-independent photocurrent saturation with negligible bimolecular recombination led to efficient charge separation and collection, which resulted in the highest power conversion efficiency up to 9.08% in PTB7-Th:PC71BM devices. Charge recombination and transport characteristics are different with incident light intensities. In chapter 4, device properties are investigated under various light intensities with three semi-crystalline polymers by modulating the intra- and intermolecular noncovalent coulombic interactions. With the polymers which exhibited compact molecular packing structures, high power conversion efficiency was achieved even in low light intensity. P2FDTBTBO devices exhibited a low efficiency of 3.69% under standard light. However the efficiency was dramatically enhanced by 2.3 times (8.33% PCE) under dim light, showing negligible decrease in open-circuit voltage and remarkable increase in fill factor, which is due to the exceptionally high Rsh of over 1000 k?? cm2. This work provides an important tips to further optimize organic solar cells for indoor applications with low-power electronic devices such as Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, etc. Conventional bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs) generally guarantee high power conversion efficiency, but poor reproducibility of active layer???s morphologies and complicated device optimization processes limit further commercialization. In chapter 5, bilayer organic solar cells (OSCs) are characterized with 5 different non-fullerene acceptors which are distinguished by Stokes shift. Bilayer-heterojunction was formed using orthogonal solvent system for donor and acceptor, and it was confirmed by various experimental techniques. ITIC-Th1, IDIC and its derivatives (Stokes shift 38~74 nm) exhibits 9-11% PCEs in bilayer-heterojunction OSCs with high fill factor ~0.70, whereas NIDCS-HO (Stokes shift 133 nm) exhibits poor PCE around 2%. The high efficiencies were enabled by their efficient self F??ster energy transfer (FRET) with long exciton diffusion lengths (20-30 nm), and long-range FRET from donor to acceptor (with significant spectral overlap between emission of donor and absorption of acceptor). The bilayer devices have negligible bimolecular and monomolecular recombination. This work suggest that small Stokes shift materials have a great potential for high-performance bilayer OSCs with long exciton diffusion lengths.clos
The Baroque Offertoire: Apotheosis of the French Organ Art
During the French Baroque period, the function of the organ was primarily to serve the liturgy. It was an integral part of both Mass and the office of Vespers. Throughout these liturgies the organ functioned in alteration with vocal music, including Gregorian chant, choral repertoire, and fauxbourdon. The longest, most glorious organ music occurred at the time of the offertory of the Mass. The Offertoire was the place where French composers could develop musical ideas over a longer stretch of time and use the full resources of the French Classic Grand jeu, the most colorful registration on the French Baroque organ. This document will survey Offertoire movements by French Baroque composers. I will begin with an introductory discussion of the role of the offertory in the Mass and the alternatim plan in use during the French Baroque era. Following this I will look at the tonal resources of the French organ as they are incorporated into French Offertoire movements. Finally, I will do a comparative analysis of the stylistic characteristics of extant French Offertoires. I will attempt to place these selected Offertoires in the context of the overall stylistic development of the French classic Offertoire. I will focus on Offertoire movements by the following composers: Guillaume-Gabriel Nivers, Nicolas Lebègue, André Raison, François Couperin, Nicolas de Grigny, and Gaspard Corrette
Who Are Better Informed Before Analysts’ Forecast Changes?
Using Korean data, we investigate information asymmetry among investors before analysts change their stock recommendations. By comparing trading activities between individuals, institutions, and foreign investors, we find that there is information asymmetry before analysts change their recommendations. Institutional investors buy/sell the stock before recommendation upgrades/downgrades, but individuals and foreign investors do not anticipate the upcoming news. We also document that the trade imbalance of institutional investors are associated with stock returns upon the announcements of recommendation changes. This result indicates that institutions take advantage of their superior information around the recommendation changes.
Putative cell adhesion membrane protein Vstm5 regulates neuronal morphology and migration in the central nervous system
During brain development, dynamic changes in neuronal membranes perform critical roles in neuronal morphogenesis and migration to create functional neural circuits. Among the proteins that induce membrane dynamics, cell adhesion molecules are important in neuronal membrane plasticity. Here, we report that V-set and transmembrane domain-containing protein 5 (Vstm5), a cell-adhesion-like molecule belonging to the Ig superfamily, was found in mouse brain. Knock-down of Vstm5 in cultured hippocampal neurons markedly reduced the complexity of dendritic structures, as well as the number of dendritic filopodia. Vstm5 also regulates neuronal morphology by promoting dendritic protrusions that later develop into dendritic spines. Using electroporationin utero, we found that Vstm5 overexpression delayed neuronal migration and induced multiple branches in leading processes during corticogenesis. These results indicate that Vstm5 is a new cell-adhesion-like molecule and is critically involved in synaptogenesis and corticogenesis by promoting neuronal membrane dynamics.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENTNeuronal migration and morphogenesis play critical roles in brain development and function. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time that V-set and transmembrane domain-containing protein 5 (Vstm5), a putative cell adhesion membrane protein, modulates both the position and complexity of central neurons by altering their membrane morphology and dynamics. Vstm5 is also one of the target genes responsible for variations in patient responses to treatments for major depressive disorder. Our results provide the first evidence that Vstm5 is a novel factor involved in the modulation of the neuronal membrane and a critical element in normal neural circuit formation during mammalian brain development.</jats:p
Impacts of aquatic walking on arterial stiffness, exercise tolerance, and physical function in patients with peripheral artery disease: a randomized clinical trial
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is an atherosclerotic disease that is associated with attenuated vascular function, cardiorespiratory capacity, physical function, and muscular strength. It is essential to combat these negative effects on health by incorporating lifestyle interventions to slow disease progression, such as exercise. We sought to examine the effects of aquatic walking exercise on cardiovascular function, cardiorespiratory capacity [maximal volume of oxygen consumption (V̇o2max)], exercise tolerance [6-min walking distance (6MWD)], physical function, muscular strength, and body composition in patients with PAD. Patients with PAD (n = 72) were recruited and randomly assigned to a 12-wk aquatic walking training group (AQ, n = 35) or a control group (CON, n = 37). The AQ group performed walking and leg exercises in waist-to-chest-deep water. Leg arterial stiffness [femoral-to-ankle pulse wave velocity (legPWV)], heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), ankle-to-brachial index (ABI), V̇o2max, 6MWD, physical function, muscular strength, body composition, resting metabolic rate (RMR), and flexibility were measured before and after 12 wk. There were significant group × time interactions (P \u3c 0.05) after 12 wk for legPWV and HR, which significantly decreased (P \u3c 0.05) in AQ, and V̇o2max, 6MWD, physical function, and muscular strength, which significantly increased (P \u3c 0.05) in AQ, compared with no changes in CON. There were no significant differences (P \u3e 0.05) for BP, ABI, RMR, or flexibility after 12 wk. Interestingly, there was relatively high adherence (84%) to the aquatic walking exercise program in this population. These results suggest that aquatic walking exercise is an effective therapy to reduce arterial stiffness and resting HR and improve cardiorespiratory capacity, exercise tolerance, physical function, and muscular strength in patients with PAD
The Clinical Evaluation between Overtraining Syndrome and Exercise-related Immunity
The present study was performed to analyze and review the physical and immune responses to overtraining syndrome in humans. Overreaching refers to the initial phage of overtraining syndrome and has been known as a physical fatigue which is mainly from metabolic imbalance. It has been known that overtraining also results in a loss of adaptability which may lead to an attenuation of exercise performance, sleeping disorder, central fatigue, neurohormonal changes, difficulty recovery to physical stress, and immunological changes. Additionally, overtraining syndrome is characterized by persistent fatigue, poor performance in sport due to the prolonged and strenuous physical training. Also, previous studies reported that endurance athletes experienced a high incidence of URTI during intense training and the post training. And also, high-performance athletes reported that suppression of cell mediated and anti-body mediated immune function. NK cell numbers were also reduced in the period of overtraining syndrome. Major components of prevention and treatment for the overtraining syndrome are screening, education, and detraining. Furthermore, the combination of these prevention and treatment strategies will be much helpful. Therefore, the current review will be helpful for athletes and individuals who are at the risk of overtraining syndrome
The involvement of AMPK/GSK3-beta signals in the control of metastasis and proliferation in hepato-carcinoma cells treated with anthocyanins extracted from Korea wild berry Meoru
BACKGROUND: Activation of the Wnt pathway is known to promote tumorigenesis and tumor metastasis, and targeting Wnt pathway inhibition has emerged as an attractive approach for controlling tumor invasion and metastasis. The major pathway for inhibiting Wnt is through the degradation of β-catenin by the GSK3-beta/CK1/Axin/APC complex. It was found that Hep3B hepato-carcinoma cells respond to anthocyanins through GSK3-beta-induced suppression of beta-catenin; however, they cannot dephosphorylate GSK3-beta without AMPK activation. METHODS: We tested the effects of anthocyanins on proliferation and apoptosis by MTT and Annexin V-PI staining in vitro. Mouse xenograft models of hepato-carcinomas were established by inoculation with Hep3B cells, and mice were injected with 50 mg/kg/ml of anthocyanins. In addition, protein levels of p-GSK3-beta, beta-catenin, p-AMPK, MMP-9, VEGF, and Ang-1 were also analyzed using western blot. RESULTS: Anthocyanins decrease phospho-GSK3-beta and beta-catenin expression in an in vivo tumor xenograft model, increase AMPK activity in this model, and inhibit cell migration and invasion, possibly by inhibiting MMP-2 (in vitro) and the panendothelial marker, CD31 (in vivo). To elucidate the role of the GSK3-beta/beta-catenin pathway in cancer control, we conditionally inactivated this pathway, using activated AMPK for inhibition. Further, we showed that AMPK siRNA treatment abrogated the ability of anthocyanins to control cell proliferation and metastatic potential, and Compound C, an AMPK inhibitor, could not restore GSK3-beta regulation, as exhibited by anthocyanins in Hep3B cells. CONCLUSION: These observations imply that the AMPK-mediated GSK3-beta/beta-catenin circuit plays crucial roles in inhibiting cancer cell proliferation and metastasis in anthocyanin-treated hepato-carcinoma cells of Meoru origin
Deformable registration of X-ray and MRI for post-implant dosimetry in low-dose-rate prostate brachytherapy
Purpose
Dosimetric assessment following permanent prostate brachytherapy (PPB) commonly involves seed localization using CT and prostate delineation using coregistered MRI. However, pelvic CT leads to additional imaging dose and requires significant resources to acquire and process both CT and MRI. In this study, we propose an automatic postimplant dosimetry approach that retains MRI for soft‐tissue contouring, but eliminates the need for CT and reduces imaging dose while overcoming the inconsistent appearance of seeds on MRI with three projection x rays acquired using a mobile C‐arm.
Methods
Implanted seeds are reconstructed using x rays by solving a combinatorial optimization problem and deformably registered to MRI. Candidate seeds are located in MR images using local hypointensity identification. X ray‐based seeds are registered to these candidate seeds in three steps: (a) rigid registration using a stochastic evolutionary optimizer, (b) affine registration using an iterative closest point optimizer, and (c) deformable registration using a local feature point search and nonrigid coherent point drift. The algorithm was evaluated using 20 PPB patients with x rays acquired immediately postimplant and T2‐weighted MR images acquired the next day at 1.5 T with mean 0.8 × 0.8 × 3.0 mmurn:x-wiley:00942405:media:mp13667:mp13667-math-0001 voxel dimensions. Target registration error (TRE) was computed based on the distance from algorithm results to manually identified seed locations using coregistered CT acquired the same day as the MRI. Dosimetric accuracy was determined by comparing prostate D90 determined using the algorithm and the ground truth CT‐based seed locations.
Results
The mean ± standard deviation TREs across 20 patients including 1774 seeds were 2.23 ± 0.52 mm (rigid), 1.99 ± 0.49 mm (rigid + affine), and 1.76 ± 0.43 mm (rigid + affine + deformable). The corresponding mean ± standard deviation D90 errors were 5.8 ± 4.8%, 3.4 ± 3.4%, and 2.3 ± 1.9%, respectively. The mean computation time of the registration algorithm was 6.1 s.
Conclusion
The registration algorithm accuracy and computation time are sufficient for clinical PPB postimplant dosimetry
GaAs droplet quantum dots with nanometer-thin capping layer for plasmonic applications
We report on the growth and optical characterisation of droplet GaAs quantum
dots with extremely-thin (11 nm) capping layers. To achieve such result, an
internal thermal heating step is introduced during the growth and its role in
the morphological properties of the quantum dots obtained is investigated via
scanning electron and atomic force microscopy. Photoluminescence measurements
at cryogenic temperatures show optically stable, sharp and bright emission from
single quantum dots, at near-infrared wavelengths. Given the quality of their
optical properties and the proximity to the surface, such emitters are ideal
candidates for the investigation of near field effects, like the coupling to
plasmonic modes, in order to strongly control the directionality of the
emission and/or the spontaneous emission rate, crucial parameters for quantum
photonic applications.Comment: 1 pages, 3 figure
