Introduction: Reflections on nancy abelmann's legacy
Nancy Abelmann passed away on January 6, 2016, at the age of fifty-six. She received her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1990, after completing her dissertation under Nelson Graburn. That same year, she was hired by the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she worked for two and a half decades. She was a beloved teacher, mentor, and colleague to many, and she was a key figure in multiple departments and centers. At the time of her death, she held the Harold E. Preble Professorship in Anthropology, Asian American Studies, East Asian Languages and Cultures, and Women and Gender Studies and was also Associate Vice Chancellor for Research
Journey of water in pine cones
Pine cones fold their scales when it rains to prevent seeds from short-distance dispersal. Given that the scales of pine cones consist of nothing but dead cells, this folding motion is evidently related to structural changes. In this study, the structural characteristics of pine cones are studied on micro-/macro-scale using various imaging instruments. Raindrops fall along the outer scales to the three layers (bract scales, fibers and innermost lignified structure) of inner pine cones. However, not all the layers but only the bract scales get wet and then, most raindrops move to the inner scales. These systems reduce the amount of water used and minimize the time spent on structural changes. The result shows that the pine cones have structural advantages that could influence the efficient motion of pine cones. This study provides new insights to understand the motion of pine cones and would be used to design a novel water transport system.119Ysciescopu
The small mixing angle and the lepton asymmetry
We present the correlation of low energy CP phases, both Dirac and Majorana,
and the lepton asymmetry for the baryon asymmetry in the universe, with a
certain class of Yukawa matrices that consist of two right-handed neutrinos and
include one texture zero in themselves. For cases in which the amount of the
lepton asymmetry turns out to be proportional to , we
consider the relation between two types of CP phases and the relation of
versus the Jarlskog invariant or the amplitude of neutrinoless double beta
decay as varies.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, information for figures added, version

The odd moments of ranks and cranks
AbstractIn this paper, we modify the standard definition of moments of ranks and cranks such that odd moments no longer trivially vanish. Denoting the new k-th rank (resp. crank) moments by N¯k(n) (resp. M¯k(n)), we prove the following inequality between the first rank and crank moments:M¯1(n)>N¯1(n). This inequality motivates us to study a new counting function, ospt(n), which is equal to M¯1(n)−N¯1(n). We also discuss higher order moments of ranks and cranks. Surprisingly, for every higher order moments of ranks and cranks, the following inequality holds:M¯k(n)>N¯k(n). This extends F.G. Garvanʼs result on the ordinary moments of ranks and cranks
Asymmetry of localised states in a single quantum ring: polarization dependence of excitons and biexcitons
We performed spectroscopic studies of a single GaAs quantum ring with an
anisotropy in the rim height. The presence of an asymmetric localised state was
suggested by the adiabatic potential. The asymmetry was investigated in terms
of the polarization dependence of excitons and biexcitons, where a large energy
di erence (0.8 meV) in the exciton emission energy for perpendicular
polarizations was observed and the oscillator strengths were also compared
using the photoluminescence decay rate. For perpendicular polarizations the
biexciton exhibits twice the energy di erence seen for the exciton, a fact that
may be attributed to a possible change in the selection rules for the lowered
symmetry.Comment: accepted in Applied physics Letter
The Development Of Contemporary Music By Korean Composers: Analyses Of Piano Works By Isang Yun, Young Jo Lee And U Zong Choe
This study concerns the development of contemporary music by three generations of Korean composers, including Isang Yun, Young Jo Lee, and U Zong Choe, focusing on stylistic analyses of selected piano works by each composer: Fünf Stücke für Klavier by Isang Yun, Korean Dance Suite by Young Jo Lee, and 12 Preludes pour piano by U Zong Choe. The study provides an overview of the history of Western contemporary music in Korea and biographical information of each composer. It also describes and analyzes the style influences and characteristics of these composers‟ output. The analyses include examinations of Western techniques and traditional Korean elements in each composer‟s selected piano works
Electronic Structure and Volume Effect on Thermoelectric Transport in P -Type Bi and Sb Tellurides
Thermoelectric transport properties (Seebeck coefficient, S, and electrical conductivity, σ) of p -type Bi and Sb tellurides are investigated using a first-principles all-electron density-functional approach. We demonstrate that the carrier concentration, band gap, and lattice constants have an important influence on the temperature behavior of S and that the volume expansion by 5.5% in Sb2Te3 results in an increase in S by 33μV/K at 300 K. We argue that in addition to the electronic structure characteristics, the volume also affects the value of S and hence should be considered as an origin of the experimental observations that S can be enhanced by doping Sb2Te3 with Bi (which has a larger ionic size) in Sb sites or by the deposition of thick Bi2Te3 layers alternating with thinner Sb2Te3 layers in a superlattice, Bi2Te3/ Sb2Te3. We show that the optimal carrier concentration for the best power factor of Bi2Te3 and Sb2 Te3 is approximately 1019 cm-
Excited exciton and biexciton localised states in a single quantum ring
We observe excited exciton and biexciton states of localised excitons in an
anisotropic quantum ring, where large polarisation asymmetry supports the
presence of a crescent-like localised structure. We also find that saturation
of the localised ground state exciton with increasing excitation can be
attributed to relatively fast dissociation of biexcitons (? 430 ps) compared to
slow relaxation from the excited state to the ground state (? 1000 ps). As no
significant excitonic Aharonov-Bohm oscillations occur up to 14 T, we conclude
that phase coherence around the rim is inhibited as a consequence of height
anisotropy in the quantum ring.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
