Comparing Evolutionary Operators, Search Spaces, and Evolutionary Algorithms in the Construction of Facial Composites

Facial composite construction is one of the most successful applications of interactive evolutionary computation. In spite of this, previous work in the area of composite construction has not investigated the algorithm design options in detail. We address this issue with four experiments. In the first experiment a sorting task is used to identify the 12 most salient dimensions of a 30-dimensional search space. In the second experiment the performances of two mutation and two recombination operators for interactive genetic algorithms are compared. In the third experiment three search spaces are compared: a 30-dimensional search space, a mathematically reduced 12-dimensional search space, and a 12-dimensional search space formed from the 12 most salient dimensions. Finally, we compare the performances of an interactive genetic algorithm to interactive differential evolution. Our results show that the facial composite construction process is remarkably robust to the choice of evolutionary operator(s), the dimensionality of the search space, and the choice of interactive evolutionary algorithm. We attribute this to the imprecise nature of human face perception and differences between the participants in how they interact with the algorithms. Povzetek: Kompozitna gradnja obrazov je ena izmed najbolj uspešnih aplikacij interaktivnega evolucijskega ra?cunanja. Kljub temu pa do zdaj na podro?cju kompozitne gradnje niso bile podrobno raziskane možnosti snovanja algoritma. To vprašanje smo obravnavali s štirimi poskusi. V prvem je uporabljeno sortiranje za identifikacijo 12 najbolj izstopajo?cih dimenzij 30-dimenzionalnega preiskovalnega prostora. V drugem primerjamo u?cinkovitost dveh mutacij in dveh rekombinacijskih operaterjev za interaktivni genetski algoritem. V tretjem primerjamo tri preiskovalne prostore: 30-dimenzionalni, matemati?cno reducirani 12-dimenzionalni in 12-dimenzionalni prostor sestavljen iz 12 najpomembnejših dimenzij. Na koncu smo primerjali uspešnost interaktivnega genetskega algoritma z interaktivno diferencialno evolucijo. Rezultati kažejo, da je proces kompozitne gradnje obrazov izredno robusten glede na izbiro evolucijskega operatorja(-ev), dimenzionalnost preiskovalnega prostora in izbiro interaktivnega evolucijskega algoritma. To pripisujemo nenatan?cni naravi percepcije in razlikam med interakcijami uporabnikov z algoritmom

    Sensing device with whisker elements

    Get PDF
A sensing device includes an elongated whisker element having a flexible cantilever region and a base region where a change in moment or curvature is generated by bending of the cantilever region when it contacts an object. One or more sensor elements cooperatively associated with the whisker element provide one or more output signals that is/are representative of two orthogonal components of change in moment or curvature at the whisker base region to permit determination of object distance, fluid velocity profile, or object contour (shape) with accounting for lateral slip of the whisker element and frictional characteristics of the object. Multiple sensing devices can be arranged in arrays in a manner to sense object contour without or with adjustment for lateral slip

Discrete Symmetries and Selection Rules in Unified SU(8) for Superconductivity and Density Waves

We show that a discrete T symmetry produces selection rules which require certain order parameters to vanish

Dynamical SU(8) - A Laboratory for Phase Coexistence

    Get PDF
We consider a model hamiltonian for the coexisting many-electron phenomena of superconductivity, charge density waves and ferro-and anti-ferrornagnetism. The spectrum-generating algebra (SGA) for such a model is su(8). We identify all 63 generators of this Lie algebra in physically meaningful bases for which the Cartan elements correspond to symmetries conserved at high temperature. The remaining 56 generators are shown to correspond to the order parameters of the various phases present in the model. A chain of subalgebras is exhibited, and the associated phenomena identified

Dynamical Group Model of the CDW State

The dynamical group for a one-dimensional model of a many-electron system exhibiting a charge-density wave is obtained. The corresponding Lie algebra in a physical model is U(2); it is used to obtain the spectrum and coherent ground state, and to define a corresponding order parameter

Traditional Beliefs and Sea Fishing in Selected Coastal Communities in the Western Region of Ghana

Fishing is the single most important and accessible economic activity along the coastal settlements of Ghana. This paper argues that in spite of the introduction of western ways of life along the coast of Ghana by the European colonialists, which were subsequently spread through diffusion, fishing activities are greatly influenced by traditional beliefs. Using a qualitative approach, this study explores the traditional beliefs associated with fishing among inhabitants of some selected fishing communities in the Western Region of Ghana. A hundred and thirty-two (132) participants were recruited and interviewed. Among other findings, the participants revealed that the sea is a god that protects and oversees fishing activities. Women are still prohibited from sea fishing due to traditional beliefs that they are physically unfit for such work. Fishing on Tuesdays which was considered a taboo is still adhered to by contemporary fishermen/ fisher folk. Serendipitously, autism was found among members of the fishing community and it was attributed to punishment from the sea gods due to violations of fishing taboos. While not discounting all the traditional beliefs, the study recommends intensive education on modern fishing practices and their impact on modern fishing communities in the face of modernity

An SU(8) Model for the Unification of Superconductivity, Charge and Spin Density Waves

We analyse a model Hamiltonian for a many-electron system which unifies superconductivity, charge density waves and spin density waves. We show that the spectrum generating algebra for this system is su(8), and identify all 63 generators of this Lie algebra as symmetry operators which are broken in transition to the condensed state, together with 56 order operators, whose expectations give the order parameters of the various phases present in the model. We tabulate the discrete symmetry properties of these operators. We construct a chain of subalgebras of sub-models with corresponding decoupled phases. We finally indicate how the finite temperature Green's Functions may be obtained and used to solve the problem of self-consistency of the order parameters in the model
