    Liver infections of Eimeria funduli, a pathogenic coccidium, greatly affected growth of Fundulus grandis (Gulf killifish) maintained in an aquaculture facility for 55 days. At termination of the experiment, average weight gained by uninfected killifish was 877.5% compared to 308.0% in diseased fish. There appeared to be no correlation between mortality and disease in this study

    Evaluation of Flow-Through, Static, and Recirculating Systems for the Intensive Culture of the Gulf Killifish Fundulus grandis with Observations on a Solar-Heated Recirculating System for the Bait Industry

    Three systems (flow-through, static, and recirculating) for intensive culture of the Gulf killifish (Fundulus grandis) for bait were evaluated. The outdoor recirculating system proved most successful. Killifish maintained in this system attained an average weight of over 2.0 gm in 42 days, an acceptable market size. Whereas the solar-heated recirculating system sustained fish densities equivalent to 1,000,000/ha and a survival rate of 86%, growth of killifish in this system was less than that observed in both the static and outdoor recirculating systems. Algae appeared to be an important nutritional component of the diet of juvenile killifish. Individuals of F. grandis fed diets supplemented with algae grew better than those maintained without them

    An Improved Algorithm for Optimal Solution of Unbalanced Transportation Problems

    Unbalanced transportation problems are particular kind of transportation problems, but an optimal solution is hard to find for unbalanced transportation problems. Still there is a need for minimizing the transportation cost. Unbalanced–TP deals with two different cases, (i) Excess of accessibility  (ii) Deficiency in accessibility  here in this paper both the cases for getting better optimal solution are discussed. Proposed algorithm is based on dummy rows and dummy columns, by taking the absolute differences (penalty) of Initial & Last cost cells of each row/column in transportation cost-matrix, where the objective function is to find an optimal solution. This method is easy to understand and apply than the other existing methods using Initial Basic Feasible Solution–IBFS. Therefore, the proposed method is very helpful to get optimal solution for unbalanced transportation problems.     A report of natural enemies of papaya mealybug, paracoccus marginatus (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) in Peninsular Malaysia

    Papaya mealybug is notorious pest of papaya & other horticultural crops. Keeping in mind the role of parasitoids and predators in pest management, an exploratory study was conducted on the availability of natural enemies of recently introduced papaya mealybug, Paracoccus marginatus in Selangor and Negri Sembilan states of Peninsular Malaysia. Results revealed the presence of two predators (Cryptolaemus montrouzieri and Apertochrysa sp.), one primary parasitoid (Acerophagus papayae) and three hyperparasitoids (Chartocerus sp., Marietta leopardina and Cheiloneurus sp.). Among all natural enemies recorded, populations of C. montrouzieri and A. papayae were frequently recorded from all sampled locations of the two states. Accordingly, these two species should be exploited for their potential to manage populations of P. marginatus below threshold levels

    Heavy metal pollution has become a severe threat to human health and the environment for many years. Their extensive release can severely damage the environment and promote the generation of many harmful diseases of public health concerns. These toxic heavy metals can cause many health problems such as brain damage, kidney failure, immune system disorder, muscle weakness, paralysis of the limbs, cardio complaint, nervous system. For many years, researchers focus on developing specific reliable analytical methods for the determination of heavy metal ions and preventing their acute toxicity to a significant extent. The modern researchers intended to utilize efficient and discerning materials, e.g. nanomaterials, especially the metal nanoparticles to detect heavy metal ions from different real sources rapidly. The metal nanoparticles have been broadly utilized as a sensing material for the colorimetric detection of toxic metal ions. The metal nanoparticles such as Gold (Au), Silver (Ag), and Copper (Cu) exhibited localized plasmon surface resonance (LPSR) properties which adds an outstanding contribution to the colorimetric sensing field. Though, the stability of metal nanoparticles was major issue to be exploited colorimetric sensing of heavy emtal ions, but from last decade different capping and stabilizing agents such as amino acids, vitmains, acids and ploymers were used to functionalize the metal surface of metal nanoparticles. These capping agents prevent the agglomeration of nanoparticles and make them more active for prolong period of time.
