    First report of the white stem borer, Scirpophaga innotata (Lep.: Crambidae: Schoenobiinae), from Iran

    We collected moth specimens from rice fields in the vicinity of the city of Lahijan in Caspian province of Guilan between 2011 and 2012. The light traps in the rice fields of the village of Pahmadan (37°16'12" N, 50°03'00" E) captured a number of specimens of Scirpophaga innotata (Walker), commonly known as white stem borer. The white stem borer is a major pest of rice in the south and southeast of Asia and Australia. This species is recorded from Iran for the first time

    Antifungal Activities of Extracts from Selected Lebanese Wild Plants against Plant Pathogenic Fungi

    Extracts of nine plant species growing wild in Lebanon were tested for their efficacy against seven plant pathogenic fungi: Botrytis cinerea, Alternaria solani, Penicillium sp., Cladosporium sp., Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis, Rhizoctonia solani and Sphaerotheca cucurbitae. Extracts of three of the plants, Origanum syriacum, Micromeria nervosa and Plumbago maritima, showed the highest levels of in vitro activity against spore germination and mycelial growth of the fungi tested. Inula viscosa showed high activity against spore germination but only moderate activity against mycelial growth. The other five plant species tested Calamintha origanifolia, Micromeria juliana, Ruta sp., Sideritis pullulans and Urginea maritima showed only moderate to low activity against these fungi. Preventive sprays with extracts of O. syriacum, M. nervosa, P. maritima and I. viscosa, applied at concentrations ranging between 4 and 8% to squash and cucumber seedlings, gave efficient protection against gray mold caused by B. cinerea and powdery mildew caused by S. cucurbitae. However, these extracts did not control green mold of citrus fruits caused by Penicillium sp. Thin layer chromatography revealed three inhibitory bands in extracts of O. syriacum, two in I. viscosa and only one in each of the other plants tested: M. nervosa, P. maritima, C. origanifolia and Ruta sp

    Visual Observation of a Moving Agent

    We address the problem of observing a moving agent. In particular, we propose a system for observing a manipulation process, where a robot hand manipulates an object. A discrete event dynamic systems (DEDS) frame work is developed for the hand/object interaction over time and a stabilizing observer is constructed. Low-level modules are developed for recognizing the events that causes state transitions within the dynamic manipulation system. The work examines closely the possibilities for errors, mistakes and uncertainties in the manipulation system, observer construction process and event identification mechanisms. The system utilizes different tracking techniques in order to observe and recognize the task in an active, adaptive and goal-directed manner

    Recovery-based staff training intervention within mental health rehabilitation units: A two-stage analysis using realistic evaluation principles and framework approach

    Background - Long-term change in recovery-based practice in mental health rehabilitation is a research priority. Methods - We used a qualitative case study analysis using a blend of traditional 'framework' analysis and 'realist' realist principles toapproaches to carry-out an evaluation of a recovery-focused staff training intervention within three purposively selected mental health rehabilitation units. We tried to ensure the validity of the data by using triangulation of multiple data sources and were collected using different methods. Results - We found that organisational culture and embedding of a change management programme in routine practice were reported as key influences to sustain any change in practice. The qualitative study generated 10 recommendations on how to achieve long-term change in practice including dealing with pre-existing organisational and cultural problems in NHS units. Conclusions - We would propose that a recovery-focused staff training intervention requires leadership, continuity and integration with existing change management programme for long-term change. The intervention must be embedded into routine practice for sustainability

    Against the odds: an investigation into student persistence in UK higher education

It examines qualities that enable students to persist in their studies despite the challenges they face, and key factors interplaying with and affecting these qualities. This study utilised the explanatory mixed-methods approach. It comprised a faculty-wide survey which explained the relationships between and across variables. Focus group interviews explored significant predictors of students’ persistence. Results from this study showed that, among other things, key drivers of student persistence were personal optimism, academic engagement, and positive relationships. Students’ decision to stay on and complete their studies determines their persistence; but there also remains a major role to be played by institutions. Successful student persistence tends to be a result of an intricate interaction between the student’s personal factors and their environment–and the institution is a key component of that environment

    Genotype and functional correlates of disease phenotype in deficiency of adenosine deaminase 2 (DADA2)

    BACKGROUND Deficiency of adenosine deaminase 2 (DADA2) is a syndrome with pleiotropic manifestations including vasculitis and hematologic compromise. A systematic definition of the relationship between ADA2 mutations and clinical phenotype remains unavailable. OBJECTIVE We tested whether the impact of ADA2 mutations on enzyme function correlates with clinical presentation. METHODS DADA2 patients with severe hematologic manifestations were compared with vasculitis-predominant patients. Enzymatic activity was assessed using expression constructs reflecting all 53 missense, nonsense, insertion and deletion genotypes from 152 patients across the DADA2 spectrum. RESULTS We identified DADA2 patients presenting with pure red cell aplasia (PRCA, n = 5) or bone marrow failure syndrome (BMF, n = 10). Most patients did not exhibit features of vasculitis. Recurrent infection, hepatosplenomegaly and gingivitis were common in patients with BMF, of whom half died from infection. Unlike DADA2 patients with vasculitis, patients with PRCA and BMF proved largely refractory to tumor necrosis factor inhibitors. ADA2 variants associated with vasculitis predominantly reflected missense mutations with at least 3% residual enzymatic activity. By contrast, PRCA and BMF were associated with missense mutations with minimal residual enzyme activity, nonsense variants, and insertions / deletions resulting in complete loss of function. CONCLUSION Functional interrogation of ADA2 mutations reveals an association of subtotal function loss with vasculitis, typically responsive to TNF blockade, whereas more extensive loss is observed in hematologic disease which may be refractory to treatment. These findings establish a genotype-phenotype spectrum in DADA2

    Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation for multiple myeloma in Europe: trends and outcomes over 25 years. A study by the EBMT Chronic Malignancies Working Party

    We describe the use and outcomes of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) for multiple myeloma (MM) in Europe between January 1990 and December 2012. We identified 7333 patients, median age at allo-HSCT was 51 years (range: 18-78), of whom 4539 (62%) were males. We distinguished three groups: (1) allo-HSCT upfront (n=1924), (2) tandem auto-allo-HSCT (n=2004) and (3) allo-HSCT as a second line treatment and beyond (n=3405). Overall, there is a steady increase in numbers of allo-HSCT over the years. Upfront allo-HSCT use increased up to year 2000, followed by a decrease thereafter and represented 12% of allo-HSCTs performed in 2012. Tandem auto-allo-HSCT peaked around year 2004 and contributed to 19% of allo-HSCTs in 2012. Allo-HSCT as salvage after one or two or three autografts was steadily increasing over the last years and represented 69% of allo-HSCTs in 2012. Remarkable heterogeneity in using allo-HSCT was observed among the different European countries. The 5-year survival probabilities from time of allo-HSCT for the three groups after year 2004 were 42%, 54% and 32%, respectively. These results show that the use of allo-HSCT is increasing in Europe, especially as second line treatment and beyond. There is an unmet need for well-designed prospective studies investigating allo-HSCT as salvage therapy for MM
