    Sitting Time and Body Mass Index, in a Portuguese Sample of Men: Results from the Azorean Physical Activity and Health Study (APAHS)

    The aim of this study was to verify the relation between body mass index (BMI) and sitting time in a sample of 4,091 Azorean men. BMI was calculated from self-reported weight and height. Total physical activity (PA) time and total sitting time were assessed with the IPAQ (short version). Linear Regression analysis showed that total sitting time (hours/day) was positively associated with BMI (B = 0.078; p < 0.001) after adjustments for age, meal frequency, alcohol and tobacco consumptions, island of residence, education level and total PA time. Although the cross sectional design precludes us from establishing causality, our findings emphasize the importance of reducing sedentary behavior to decrease the risk of obesity

    Ability of Different Measures of Adiposity to Identify High Metabolic Risk in Adolescents

    Introduction. This study aimed to evaluate the screening performance of different measures of adiposity: body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) for high metabolic risk in a sample of adolescents. Methods. A cross-sectional school-based study was conducted on 517 adolescents aged 15–18, from the Azorean Islands, Portugal. We measured fasting glucose, insulin, total cholesterol (TC), HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, and systolic blood pressure. HOMA and TC/HDL-C ratio were calculated. For each of these variables, a Z-score was computed by age and sex. A metabolic risk score (MRS) was constructed by summing the Z-scores of all individual risk factors. High risk was considered when the individual had ≥1SD of this score. Receiver-operating characteristics (ROC) were used. Results. Linear regression analyses showed that, after adjusting for age and pubertal stage, all different measures of adiposity are positively and significantly associated with MRS in both sexes, with exception of WHtR for boys. BMI, WC, and WHtR performed well in detecting high MRS, indicated by areas under the curve (AUC), with slightly greater AUC for BMI than for WC and WHtR in both sexes. Conclusion. All measures of adiposity were significantly associated with metabolic risk factors in a sample of Portuguese adolescents

    Rare primary dyslipidaemias associated with low LDL and HDL cholesterol values in Portugal

    Dyslipidaemia represents a group of disorders of lipid metabolism, characterized by either an increase or decrease in lipid particles, usually associated with triglycerides, LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) and/or HDL cholesterol (HDL-C). Most hyperlipidaemias and HDL deficiencies confer an increased cardiovascular risk, while hypolipidaemia, such as abeta or hypobetalipoproteinemia, may present different manifestations ranging from poor weight progression to neurological manifestations. The aim of this study is to present 7 cases with rare dyslipidaemias associated with low LDL or low HDL cholesterol values, referred to our laboratory for the genetic identification of the cause of the dyslipidaemia. Lipid profile was determined for each individual in an automated equipment Integra Cobas (Roche). Molecular analysis was performed by NGS with a target panel of 57 genes involved in lipid metabolism (Sure select QXT, Agilent) and samples were run in a NextSEQ Sequencer (Illumina). Only genes associated to rare forms of low HDL-c or LDL-c were analysed for this work, namely: ABCA1, APOA1, LCAT, SCARB1, APOB, PCSK9, MTTP, SAR1B, and ANGPTL3. All rare variants (MAF<5%) found in these genes were confirmed by Sanger sequencing. This study includes 7 index cases (IC), with the following clinical diagnoses: Fish Eye Disease (1), Hypoalphalipoproteinemia (1) and Abetalipoproteinemia (ABL) / Familial Hypobetalipoproteinemia (FHBL) (5). We have identified one IC with a compound heterozygosity in LCAT causing Fish Eye Disease and one IC with a variant in ABCA1 in homozygosity causing Tangier disease. We found variants causing homozygous FHBL in 2 IC, one of whom has an undescribed pathogenic variant in homozygosity in APOB (c.12087+1G>A) and the other is a possible compound heterozygous for APOB variants c.2604+1G>A and c.4651C>T/p.(Gln1551*). In two patients only a variant in heterozygosity (c.3365delG/p.(Gly1122Vfs*62) and c.11095A>T/p.(Arg3699*)). In the remaining patient, no variants were identified. NGS proved to be a fundamental key for genetic testing of rare lipid disorders, allowing us to find the genetic cause of disease in 6/7 patients with low HDL-c and LDL-c. Patients with these rare conditions should be identified as early as possible in order to minimize or prevent clinical manifestations.     Objectively Measured Physical Activity and Body Mass Index in Preschool Children

    Aim. To examine the association between objectively measured physical activity (PA) and body mass index (BMI) in preschool children. Methods. The study comprised 281 children (55.9% boys) aged from 4 to 6 years. PA was measured by accelerometer. Children were categorized as non-overweight (NOW) and overweight/obese (OW) according to the sex-adjusted BMI z-score (<1 and ≥1, resp.). Results. Total and moderate intensity PA were not associated with BMI. We observed that a higher proportion of OW children were classified as low-vigorous PA compared to their NOW peers (43.9 versus 32.1%, resp., P > .05). Logistic regression analysis showed that children with low-vigorous PA had higher odds ratio (OR) to be classified as OW compared to those with high-vigorous PA (OR = 4.4; 95% CI: 1.4–13.4; P = .008) after adjusting for BMI at first and second years of life and other potential confounders. Conclusion. The data suggests that vigorous PA may play a key role in the obesity development already at pre-school age

    Aleitamento materno e a relação com a obesidade infantil: uma revisão narrativa/ Breastfeeding and the relationship with childhood obesity: a narrative review

    Introdução: O aleitamento materno é um ato excepcional para a saúde do neonato, uma vez que ele exerce uma grande influência nas primeiras experiências nutricionais do indivíduo, alterando sua suscetibilidade para o desenvolvimento de comorbidades como a obesidade infantil - doença crônico-degenerativa e multifatorial considerada como um dos maiores problemas de saúde pública no mundo. Objetivo: Investigar, interpretar e revisar os achados sobre o aleitamento materno e a sua relação com a obesidade infantil. Metodologia: Utilizou-se a base Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE/PubMed), sob os descritores “Aleitamento materno” e “Obesidade infantil”, com a seleção de artigos de revisão e artigos originais, seguindo critérios de elegibilidade. Foram encontrados 833 textos, com seleção inicial de 139, dos quais restaram 22 artigos elegíveis. Resultados: Os artigos, redigidos em língua inglesa, contemplavam também publicações de autores e periódicos de diferentes nacionalidades. A maioria dos artigos abrangiam os anos de 2016 (quatro) e 2018 (quatro), e grande parte foi publicada nos últimos cinco anos. Considerações finais: Evidencia-se que o aleitamento materno traz benefícios tanto a curto prazo, na medida em que fornece adequado aporte nutricional necessário ao desenvolvimento inicial da criança, quanto em longo prazo, sendo um importante fator de proteção contra a obesidade infantil

    WorldFAIR (D10.3) Agricultural biodiversity FAIR data assessment rubrics

    The WorldFAIR Case Study on Agricultural Biodiversity (WP10) addresses the challenges of advancing interoperability and mobilising plant-pollinator interactions data for reuse. Previous efforts, reported in WorldFAIR Deliverable 10.1, ‘Agriculture-related pollinator data standards use cases report’ (Trekels et al., 2023), provided an overview of projects, good practices, tools, and examples for creating, managing and sharing data related to plant-pollinator interactions. It also outlined a work plan for conducting pilot studies. Deliverable 10.2 (Drucker et al., 2024) presented Agricultural Biodiversity Standards, Best Practices and Guidelines Recommendations. This deliverable presented results from six pilot studies that adopted standards and recommendations from the earlier report. The current report complements the efforts with Agricultural Biodiversity FAIR data assessment rubrics.We introduce a set of FAIR assessment tools tailored to the plant-pollinator interactions domain. These tools are designed to help researchers and institutions evaluate adherence to the FAIR principles. In the discovery phase, we found that a significant amount of data on plant-pollinator interactions is available as supplementary files of research articles, in a diversity of formats such as PDFs, Excel spreadsheets, and text files. The diversity of approaches and the lack of appropriate data vocabularies lead to confusion, information loss, and the need for complex data interpretation and transformation. Our proposed framework primarily targets researchers in this domain who wish to assess the FAIRness of the data they produce and take action to improve it. However, we believe it can also benefit data reviewers, data stewards, data repository managers and librarians dealing with plant-pollinator data. Our approach focuses on being as familiar as possible with the researcher's practices, language, and jargon. Ultimately, we aim to promote data publishing and reuse in the plant-pollinator interactions domain.We present a ‘Rubric for the assessment of Plant-Pollinator Interactions Data’ with examples from the data from the pilots developed in Deliverable 10.2 and in relation to the FAIR Implementation Profile (FIP) created by Work Package 10. We conduct ‘dataset assessments’ of available data from research projects surveyed in the discovery phase. Additionally, we describe in detail the ‘Automated FAIR-enabled Data Reviews’ generated by the Global Biotic Interactions (GLoBI) infrastructure, with examples from the pilots. We believe the tools described in this report will encourage data publishing and reuse in the plant-pollinator interactions domain. Moving from diverse approaches and siloed initiatives to widely available FAIR plant-pollination interactions data for scientists and decision-makers will enable the development of integrative studies that enhance our understanding of species biology, behaviour, ecology, phenology, and evolution
