The study aimed to describe the educational profile of athletes who work in the State of Rio de Janeiro and in the period of basic schooling. The study had a quantitative and qualitative approach. Structured interviews were conducted with non-probability sample consists of 417 players of the base categories, inscribed in the year 2009 in the Soccer Federation of Rio de Janeiro State and 30 semi-structured interviews. The results showed that the athletes remain at the school; however the flight rotation and low cultural capital can negatively affect his career. To become a professional of soccer is a project which involves all athlete’s family, and maybe this is what makes him not prioritize his formal education. Our data suggest that the more the athlete invest in his career, the more the probability of putting school in the background

Shotgun sequencing of the human transcriptome with ORF expressed sequence tags

Theoretical considerations predict that amplification of expressed gene transcripts by reverse transcription-PCR using arbitrarily chosen primers will result in the preferential amplification of the central portion of the transcript. systematic, high-throughput sequencing of such products would result in an expressed sequence tag (EST) database consisting of central, generally coding regions of expressed genes. Such a database would add significant value to existing public EST databases, which consist mostly of sequences derived from the extremities of cDNAs, and facilitate the construction of contigs of transcript sequences. We tested our predictions, creating a database of 10,000 sequences from human breast tumors. The data confirmed the central distribution of the sequences, the significant normalization of the sequence population, the frequent extension of contigs composed of existing human ESTs, and the identification of a series of potentially important homologues of known genes. This approach should make a significant contribution to the early identification of important human genes, the deciphering of the draft human genome sequence currently being compiled, and the shotgun sequencing of the human transcriptome.9773491349

Difficulties faced in the nursing routine, maiwly in hospitals, have been reported without the resulting ethical implications to workers and especially to clients, been sufficiently questioned. The work workers, related to the exercise of power of different actors involved in the health institutions, which can potentially cause multiple problems and distress of ethical order. This study aims to make acritical reflection about some relations between the nursing work organization, power relations and its ethical dimension, strategies for an ethical performance of nurses and other nursing professionals in the organization of work in the healthcare institutions point to the need of these professionals exercise power in an ethical way.

Differential association of adiponectin with cardiovascular risk markers in men and women? The KORA survey 2000

In men, high adiponectin concentrations were related to a lower risk of myocardial infarction, whereas no association with cardiovascular events was found in women. To investigate sex differences in the associations of adiponectin with cardiovascular risk factors.Design: Cross-sectional population-based KORA Survey 2000 in Southern Germany using the same study methods for cardiovascular risk factors as the former WHO MONICA project.Participants:A total of 697 men and 657 women, aged 55–74 years. Glucose tolerance status was assessed by oral glucose tolerance tests.Adiponectin (geometric mean, interquartile range; mug/ml) levels were significantly higher in women (11.1; 8.5–14.9) than in men (7.1; 5.2–9.6) (P<0.05). In univariate analyses, HDL-cholesterol and age were significantly positively correlated with adiponectin in both sexes. Negative correlations were observed with BMI, waist circumference, fasting and postchallenge glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, HbA1c, triglycerides, uric acid and CRP (P<0.01). In sex-specific multivariate regression, age and HDL-cholesterol were independently positively, and fasting insulin and 2-h glucose were negatively related to adiponectin in both sexes. Uric acid was significantly inversely related to adiponectin in women only (sex interaction: P=0.02). Exploratory sex-specific factor analysis of adiponectin and the core components of the metabolic syndrome yielded four similar factors. Adiponectin loaded negatively on the 'lipids' factor in both sexes. The associations of adiponectin with cardiovascular risk factors showed a similar pattern in both sexes, except for uric acid. This small sex difference may not explain previous conflicting results on the association of adiponectin with cardiovascular events in men and women
