Computational Analysis of Fundus Images: Rule-Based and Scale-Space Models
Fundus images are one of the most important imaging examinations in modern ophthalmology
because they are simple, inexpensive and, above all, noninvasive.
Nowadays, the acquisition and
storage of highresolution
fundus images is relatively easy and fast. Therefore, fundus imaging
has become a fundamental investigation in retinal lesion detection, ocular health monitoring and
screening programmes. Given the large volume and clinical complexity associated with these images,
their analysis and interpretation by trained clinicians becomes a timeconsuming
task and is
prone to human error. Therefore, there is a growing interest in developing automated approaches
that are affordable and have high sensitivity and specificity. These automated approaches need to
be robust if they are to be used in the general population to diagnose and track retinal diseases. To
be effective, the automated systems must be able to recognize normal structures and distinguish
them from pathological clinical manifestations.
The main objective of the research leading to this thesis was to develop automated systems capable
of recognizing and segmenting retinal anatomical structures and retinal pathological clinical
manifestations associated with the most common retinal diseases. In particular, these automated
algorithms were developed on the premise of robustness and efficiency to deal with the difficulties
and complexity inherent in these images. Four objectives were considered in the analysis of
fundus images. Segmentation of exudates, localization of the optic disc, detection of the midline
of blood vessels, segmentation of the vascular network and detection of microaneurysms.
In addition, we also evaluated the detection of diabetic retinopathy on fundus images using the
microaneurysm detection method. An overview of the state of the art is presented to compare the
performance of the developed approaches with the main methods described in the literature for
each of the previously described objectives. To facilitate the comparison of methods, the state of
the art has been divided into rulebased
methods and machine learningbased
methods.
In the research reported in this paper, rulebased
methods based on image processing methods
were preferred over machine learningbased
methods. In particular, scalespace
methods proved
to be effective in achieving the set goals.
Two different approaches to exudate segmentation were developed. The first approach is based on
scalespace
curvature in combination with the local maximum of a scalespace
blob detector and
dynamic thresholds. The second approach is based on the analysis of the distribution function of
the maximum values of the noise map in combination with morphological operators and adaptive
thresholds. Both approaches perform a correct segmentation of the exudates and cope well with
the uneven illumination and contrast variations in the fundus images.
Optic disc localization was achieved using a new technique called cumulative sum fields, which was
combined with a vascular enhancement method. The algorithm proved to be reliable and efficient,
especially for pathological images. The robustness of the method was tested on 8 datasets.
The detection of the midline of the blood vessels was achieved using a modified corner detector
in combination with binary philtres and dynamic thresholding. Segmentation of the vascular network
was achieved using a new scalespace
blood vessels enhancement method. The developed
methods have proven effective in detecting the midline of blood vessels and segmenting vascular
networks.
The microaneurysm detection method relies on a scalespace
microaneurysm detection and labelling
system. A new approach based on the neighbourhood of the microaneurysms was used
for labelling. Microaneurysm detection enabled the assessment of diabetic retinopathy detection.
The microaneurysm detection method proved to be competitive with other methods, especially with highresolution
images. Diabetic retinopathy detection with the developed microaneurysm
detection method showed similar performance to other methods and human experts.
The results of this work show that it is possible to develop reliable and robust scalespace
methods
that can detect various anatomical structures and pathological features of the retina. Furthermore,
the results obtained in this work show that although recent research has focused on machine learning
methods, scalespace
methods can achieve very competitive results and typically have greater
independence from image acquisition. The methods developed in this work may also be relevant
for the future definition of new descriptors and features that can significantly improve the results
of automated methods.
A
Considerando o elevado volume e complexidade clínica associada a estas imagens, a análise
A primeira abordagem
baseiase
A segunda abordagem baseiase
A robustez
semelhante a outros métodos e a especialistas humanos.
Microaneurysms detection using a novel neighborhood analysis
The earliest sign of the diabetic retinopathy is the appearance of small red dots in retinal fundus images, designated by microaneurysms. In this paper a scale-space based method is proposed for the microaneurysms detection. Initially, the method performs a segmentation of the retinal vasculature and defines a global set of microaneurysms candidates, using both coarser and finer scales. Using the finer scales, a set of microaneurysms candidates are analysed in terms of shape and size. Then, a set of gaussian-shaped matched filters are used to reduce the number of false microaneurysms candidates. Each candidate is labeled as a true microaneurysm using a new neighborhood analysis method. The proposed algorithm was tested with the training Retinopathy Online Challenge (ROC) dataset, revealing a 47% Sensitivity with an average number of 37.9 false positives per image

This study is concerned with the taxonomy, geographical distribution, phenology and floral biology of species of Orchidaceae found at the Campina Biological Reserve (Manaus-Caracaraí Road, Km. 62). A list of the orchids collected from or cited as occurring in campinas of Central Amazonia has also been included for comparison. A total of 24 genera and 48 species of orchids were found in the campinas studied. Encyclia fragrans (Sw.) Lemée was found to be the most common species. The number of endemic species appeared to be small, 9.67%. Only Bulbophyllum correae Pabst, Encyclia tarumana Schltr., and Maxillaria pauciflora Barb. Rodr. appeared as species characteristic of this community. 31 species belonging to 17 genera were found at the Campina Reserve, and most species had a broad range of distribution. Bulbophyllum correae Pabst was collected here which extended its previously described range, and Ornithidium parviflorum (Poepp. & Endl.) Rchb. f. was collected for the first time in the state of Amazonas. The phenology of the species was variable throughout the twelve months of the year, and the phenology of species belonging to the same genus was also variable. The months of little flowering activity with the rainy season when insolation, radiation and temperatures were low. During the season of less rain, prior to the budding period, temperatures dropped to an absolute minimum of 19.0°C. This probably induced the species which flower during the rainy season to be activated at this time, when normally they would not flower. The months of greatest flowering coincided coincided with the relatively dry months, when radiation, temperatures and insolation were high. Only Epidendrum huebneri Schltr. of all the flowering species, blossomed all year round. In relation to the vegetative development there did not seem to be a marked difference between those species which flowered during the dry and wet seasons respectively. The genus Catasetum was the only one to lose its leaves during the dry season. The majority of pollinization syndromes of the plants found at the Campina Reserve showed adaptation to Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera and Trochillidae (in that order). The plants produced odor mostly during the morning. Few species produced odors at night or during the afternoon. Three species did not produce odors. Rodriguezia secunda H.B.K. was previously reported as being pollinized by Trochollidae. However, it was observed that Heliconius hermanthena (Hewitson) (Lepidoptera) seemed to be the real pollinator in the area. Analysing the floral syndrome of this species, it was concluded that the species syndrome encompasses the two types of pollinators. This is of great importance from the evolutionary point of view of this species, as the campina population is isolated from other populations, and this could encourage future occurrence of speciation. The majority of the species need a pollinizing agent for effective fertilization according to the data on pollination and fertilization. Only Epidendrum strobiliferum Rchb. f. was autogamous. Once the number of seeds per capsule in this family is taken into consideration, the average computed for pollinization and fruiting is significant, 0.49 and 0.52 respectively. The fact that the average for fruiting is higher than the average for pollinization at first seems contradictory. However, this questionable result is explained by the autogamy of Epidendrum strobiliferum, which influences the numerical results. Insofar as the relationship between the pollination mechanisms and pollinizing agents is concerned, it was noted that the pollinia adheres specifically and precisely. This is of great importance in maintaining the specificity of the pollinizing mechanism. It was noted that animals other than specific pollinizing agents also visited the flowers, but they either did not carry pollinia, or their visit did not result in pollinization.
Rodr.
This is the first of a series of articles on orchids of the state of Amazonas, and their floral biology. In the present paper, the floral biology of Stanhopea candida Barb. Rodr. was studied. The species was included in the grandiflora group due to its pollination by a "fall through" mechanism. The attractant strategies of the species are elaborate. Pollination, in the vicinity of Manaus, is carried out by Euiaema mocsaryi, as effective pollinator, while Euglossa ignita acts as an "odor thief".O autor com este trabalho começa uma série sobre as orquídeas do Amazonas e sua biologia floral.
The act of lighting covers much more than the simple action of turning on a
light. We consider in this context an aesthetic attitude, an expression,
sentimental and emotional narrative. We intend on this study to reference
values and acts of lighting, to recognize that may be present and participate at
different scales and circumstances. We intend to evidence and observe that is
long and versatile the recognition and use of light, by demonstrating the
theoretical study of the value of natural and artificial light, its recognition and
use in various artistic ways and the different valuation according to cultures. We
speak mainly of the importance of aesthetics and particular atmospheres that
light and design can boost.
The practical project rethinks the symbolic and expressive treatment of light in
the spaces we inhabit. It is proposed to think light as spaces identity generator,
which we adapt to our feeling and daily living by the use and appreciation of
light. Free exploration of different light environments, shapes, colors and
intensity, in domestic and public environments. Through the use of modular
panels, adaptable to different emotional and aesthetic contexts that can be
handled by the individual
