Obesity in Urban Food Markets: Evidence from Geo-referenced Micro Data
This paper provides quantitative estimates of the effect of proximity to fast food restaurants and grocery stores on obesity in urban food markets. Our empirical model combined georeferenced micro data on access to fast food restaurants and grocery stores with data about salient personal characteristics, individual behaviors, and neighborhood characteristics. We defined a "local food environment" for every individual utilizing 0.5-mile buffers around a person's home address. Local food landscapes are potentially endogenous due to spatial sorting of the population and food outlets, and the body mass index (BMI) values for individuals living close to each other are likely to be spatially correlated because of observed and unobserved individual and neighborhood effects. The potential biases associated with endogeneity and spatial correlation were handled using spatial econometric estimation techniques. Our policy simulations for Indianapolis, Indiana, focused on the importance of reducing the density of fast food restaurants or increasing access to grocery stores. Beyond Spheroids and Discs: Classifications of CANDELS Galaxy Structure at 1.4 < z < 2 via Principal Component Analysis
Important but rare and subtle processes driving galaxy morphology and
star-formation may be missed by traditional spiral, elliptical, irregular or
S\'ersic bulge/disk classifications. To overcome this limitation, we use a
principal component analysis of non-parametric morphological indicators
(concentration, asymmetry, Gini coefficient, , multi-mode, intensity
and deviation) measured at rest-frame -band (corresponding to HST/WFC3 F125W
at 1.4 ) galaxy morphologies. Principal component analysis (PCA) quantifies
the correlations between these morphological indicators and determines the
relative importance of each. The first three principal components (PCs) capture
75 per cent of the variance inherent to our sample. We interpret the
first principal component (PC) as bulge strength, the second PC as dominated by
concentration and the third PC as dominated by asymmetry. Both PC1 and PC2
correlate with the visual appearance of a central bulge and predict galaxy
quiescence. PC1 is a better predictor of quenching than stellar mass, as as
good as other structural indicators (S\'ersic-n or compactness). We divide the
PCA results into groups using an agglomerative hierarchical clustering method.
Unlike S\'ersic, this classification scheme separates compact galaxies from
larger, smooth proto-elliptical systems, and star-forming disk-dominated clumpy
galaxies from star-forming bulge-dominated asymmetric galaxies. Distinguishing
between these galaxy structural types in a quantitative manner is an important
step towards understanding the connections between morphology, galaxy assembly

Figuring Out Gas & Galaxies In Enzo (FOGGIE). IV. The Stochasticity of Ram Pressure Stripping in Galactic Halos
We study ram pressure stripping in simulated Milky Way-like halos at z>=2
from the Figuring Out Gas & Galaxies In Enzo (FOGGIE) project. These
simulations reach exquisite resolution in their circumgalactic medium (CGM) gas
owing to FOGGIE's novel refinement scheme. The CGM of each halo spans a wide
dynamic range in density and velocity over its volume---roughly 6 dex and 1000
km/s, respectively---translating into a 5 dex range in ram pressure imparted to
interacting satellites. The ram pressure profiles of the simulated CGM are
highly stochastic, owing to kpc-scale variations of the density and velocity
fields of the CGM gas. As a result, the efficacy of ram pressure stripping
depends strongly on the specific path a satellite takes through the CGM. The
ram-pressure history of a single satellite is generally unpredictable and not
well correlated with its approach vector with respect to the host galaxy. The
cumulative impact of ram pressure on the simulated satellites is dominated by
only a few short strong impulses---on average, 90% of the total surface
momentum gained through ram pressure is imparted in 20% or less of the total
orbital time. These results reveal an erratic mode of ram pressure stripping in
Milky-Way like halos at high redshift---one that is not captured by a smooth

Secret Codes: The Hidden Curriculum of Semantic Web Technologies
There is a long tradition in education of examination of the hidden curriculum, those elements which are implicit or tacit to the formal goals of education. This article draws upon that tradition to open up for investigation the hidden curriculum and assumptions about students and knowledge that are embedded in the coding undertaken to facilitate learning through information technologies, and emerging ‘semantic technologies’ in particular. Drawing upon an empirical study of case-based pedagogy in higher education, we examine the ways in which code becomes an actor in both enabling and constraining knowledge, reasoning, representation and students. The article argues that how this occurs, and to what effect, is largely left unexamined and becomes part of the hidden curriculum of electronically mediated learning that can be more explicitly examined by positioning technologies in general, and code in particular, as actors rather than tools. This points to a significant research agenda in technology enhanced learning
Physical drivers facilitating a toxigenic cyanobacterial bloom in a major Great Lakes tributary
The Maumee River is the primary source for nutrients fueling seasonal Microcystis-dominated blooms in western Lake Erie\u27s open waters though such blooms in the river are infrequent. The river also serves as source water for multiple public water systems and a large food services facility in northwest Ohio. On 20 September 2017, an unprecedented bloom was reported in the Maumee River estuary within the Toledo metropolitan area, which triggered a recreational water advisory. Here we (1) explore physical drivers likely contributing to the bloom\u27s occurrence, and (2) describe the toxin concentration and bacterioplankton taxonomic composition. A historical analysis using 10-years of seasonal river discharge, water level, and local wind data identified two instances when high-retention conditions occurred over ≥ 10 d in the Maumee River estuary: in 2016 and during the 2017 bloom. Observation by remote sensing imagery supported the advection of cyanobacterial cells into the estuary from the lake during 2017 and the lack of an estuary bloom in 2016 due to a weak cyanobacterial bloom in the lake. A rapid-response survey during the 2017 bloom determined levels of the cyanotoxins, specifically microcystins, in excess of recreational contact limits at sites within the lower 20 km of the river while amplicon sequencing found these sites were dominated by Microcystis. These results highlight the need to broaden our understanding of physical drivers of cyanobacterial blooms within the interface between riverine and lacustrine systems, particularly as such blooms are expected to become more prominent in response to a changing climate
The psychiatric phenotypes of 1q21 distal deletion and duplication
Copy number variants are amongst the most highly penetrant risk factors for psychopathology and neurodevelopmental deficits, but little information about the detailed clinical phenotype associated with particular variants is available. We present the largest study of the microdeletion and -duplication at the distal 1q21 locus, which has been associated with schizophrenia and intellectual disability, in order to investigate the range of psychiatric phenotypes. Clinical and cognitive data from 68 deletion and 55 duplication carriers were analysed with logistic regression analysis to compare frequencies of mental disorders between carrier groups and controls, and linear mixed models to compare quantitative phenotypes. Both children and adults with copy number variants at 1q21 had high frequencies of psychopathology. In the children, neurodevelopmental disorders were most prominent (56% for deletion, 68% for duplication carriers). Adults had increased prevalence of mood (35% for deletion [OR = 6.6 (95% CI: 1.4-40.1)], 55% for duplication carriers [8.3 (1.4-55.5)]) and anxiety disorders (24% [1.8 (0.4-8.4)] and 55% [10.0 (1.9-71.2)]). The adult group, which included mainly genetically affected parents of probands, had an IQ in the normal range. These results confirm high prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders associated with CNVs at 1q21 but also reveal high prevalence of mood and anxiety disorders in a high-functioning adult group with these CNVs. Because carriers of neurodevelopmental CNVs who show relevant psychopathology but no major cognitive impairment are not currently routinely receiving clinical genetic services widening of genetic testing in psychiatry may be considered
