Discovery Of A Molecular Outflow in the Haro 6-10 Star-Forming Region
We present high sensitivity 12CO and 13CO (1-0) molecular line maps covering
the full extent of the parsec scale Haro~6-10 Herbig-Haro (HH) flow. We report
the discovery of a molecular CO outflow along the axis of parsec-scale HH flow.
Previous molecular studies missed the identification of the outflow probably
due to their smaller mapping area and the confusing spectral features present
towards the object. Our detailed molecular line study of the full 1.6 pc extent
of the optical flow shows evidence for both blueshifted and redshifted gas set
in motion by Haro~6-10 activity. The molecular outflow is centered at
Haro~6-10, with redshifted gas being clumpy and directed towards the northeast,
while blueshifted gas is in the southwest direction. The molecular gas
terminates well within the cloud, short of the most distant HH objects of the
optical flow. Contamination from an unrelated cloud along the same line of
sight prevents a thorough study of the blueshifted outflow lobe and the mass
distribution at the lowest velocities in both lobes. The cloud core in which
Haro~6-10 is embedded is filamentary and flattened in the east-west direction.
The total cloud mass is calculated from 13CO(1-0) to be ~200Msun. The lower

Understanding the Social Science Effect: An Intervention in Life Course Generosity
Does interacting with social science data in early adulthood promote generosity? To investigate this question from a life course development perspective, two distinct samples were drawn for a survey with an embedded experimental design. The first sample is of emerging adult college students (n = 30, median age = 20 years). The second sample is of young adults who were selected to participate based on their prior participation in a nationally representative and longitudinal study (n = 170, median age = 31 years). Toward the end of the survey, participants were randomly selected into a website interaction with either: (a) data on charitable giving, (b) data on social inequality, or (c) data about weather (a control condition). The key outcome of interest is a behavioral measure of generosity: whether participants elected to keep their study incentive or donate their incentive to a charitable organization. The donation decision occurred after the randomly selected website interaction. Interacting with charitable giving data resulted in greater generosity than interacting with weather data, across both samples. Interacting with social inequality data had mixed results. Moreover, emerging adult college students gave at a considerably higher rate overall than the national sample of young adults, net of treatment type. Implications are discussed
Embedded Stellar Clusters in the W3/W4/W5 Molecular Cloud Complex
We analyze the embedded stellar content in the vicinity of the W3/W4/W5 HII
regions using the FCRAO Outer Galaxy 12CO(J=1-0) Survey, the IRAS Point Source
Catalog, published radio continuum surveys, and new near-infrared and molecular
line observations. Thirty-four IRAS Point Sources are identified that have
far-infrared colors characteristic of embedded star forming regions, and we
have obtained K' mosaics and 13CO(J=1-0) maps for 32 of them. Ten of the IRAS
sources are associated with an OB star and 19 with a stellar cluster, although
three OB stars are not identified with a cluster. Half of the embedded stellar
population identified in the K' images is found in just the 5 richest clusters,
and 61% is contained in IRAS sources associated with an embedded OB star. Thus
rich clusters around OB stars contribute substantially to the stellar
population currently forming in the W3/W4/W5 region. Approximately 39% of the
cluster population is embedded in small clouds with an average mass of ~130 Mo
that are located as far as 100 pc from the W3/W4/W5 cloud complex. We speculate
that these small clouds are fragments of a cloud complex dispersed by previous
episodes of massive star formation. Finally, we find that 4 of the 5 known
embedded massive star forming sites in the W3 molecular cloud are found along
the interface with the W4 HII region despite the fact that most of the
molecular mass is contained in the interior regions of the cloud. These
observations are consistent with the classical notion that the W4 HII region
has triggered massive star formation along the eastern edge of the W3 molecular

Internal-external cross-validation helped to evaluate the generalizability of prediction models in large clustered datasets
OBJECTIVE: To illustrate how to evaluate the need of complex strategies for developing generalizable prediction models in large clustered datasets. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We developed eight Cox regression models to estimate the risk of heart failure using a large population-level dataset. These models differed in the number of predictors, the functional form of the predictor effects (non-linear effects and interaction) and the estimation method (maximum likelihood and penalization). Internal-external cross-validation was used to evaluate the models' generalizability across the included general practices. RESULTS: Among 871,687 individuals from 225 general practices, 43,987 (5.5%) developed heart failure during a median follow-up time of 5.8 years. For discrimination, the simplest prediction model yielded a good concordance statistic, which was not much improved by adopting complex strategies. Between-practice heterogeneity in discrimination was similar in all models. For calibration, the simplest model performed satisfactorily. Although accounting for non-linear effects and interaction slightly improved the calibration slope, it also led to more heterogeneity in the observed/expected ratio. Similar results were found in a second case study involving patients with stroke. CONCLUSION: In large clustered datasets, prediction model studies may adopt internal-external cross-validation to evaluate the generalizability of competing models, and to identify promising modelling strategies
First Passage Properties of the Erdos-Renyi Random Graph
We study the mean time for a random walk to traverse between two arbitrary
sites of the Erdos-Renyi random graph. We develop an effective medium
approximation that predicts that the mean first-passage time between pairs of
nodes, as well as all moments of this first-passage time, are insensitive to
the fraction p of occupied links. This prediction qualitatively agrees with
numerical simulations away from the percolation threshold. Near the percolation
threshold, the statistically meaningful quantity is the mean transit rate,
namely, the inverse of the first-passage time. This rate varies
non-monotonically with p near the percolation transition. Much of this behavior

Submillimeter Emission from Water in the W3 Region
We have mapped the submillimeter emission from the 1(10)-1(01) transition of
ortho-water in the W3 star-forming region. A 5'x5' map of the W3 IRS4 and W3
IRS5 region reveals strong water lines at half the positions in the map. The
relative strength of the Odin lines compared to previous observations by SWAS
suggests that we are seeing water emission from an extended region. Across much
of the map the lines are double-peaked, with an absorption feature at -39 km/s;
however, some positions in the map show a single strong line at -43 km/s. We
interpret the double-peaked lines as arising from optically thick,
self-absorbed water emission near the W3 IRS5, while the narrower blue-shifted
lines originate in emission near W3 IRS4. In this model, the unusual appearance
of the spectral lines across the map results from a coincidental agreement in
velocity between the emission near W3 IRS4 and the blue peak of the more
complex lines near W3 IRS5. The strength of the water lines near W3 IRS4
suggests we may be seeing water emission enhanced in a photon-dominated region.Comment: Accepted to A&A Letters as part of the special Odin issue; 4 page
Pion-nucleus elastic scattering on 12C, 40Ca, 90Zr, and 208Pb at 400 and 500 MeV
Pion-nucleus elastic scattering at energies above the Delta(1232) resonance
is studied using both pi+ and pi- beams on 12C, 40Ca, 90Zr, and 208Pb. The
present data provide an opportunity to study the interaction of pions with
nuclei at energies where second-order corrections to impulse approximation
calculations should be small. The results are compared with other data sets at
similar energies, and with four different first-order impulse approximation
calculations. Significant disagreement exists between the calculations and the
data from this experiment
Topological Orthoalgebras
We define topological orthoalgebras (TOAs) and study their properties. While
every topological orthomodular lattice is a TOA, the lattice of projections of
a Hilbert space is an example of a lattice-ordered TOA that is not a toplogical
lattice. On the other hand, we show that every compact Boolean TOA is a
topological Boolean algebra. We also show that a compact TOA in which 0 is an
isolated point is atomic and of finite height. We identify and study a
particularly tractable class of TOAs, which we call {\em stably ordered}: those
in which the upper-set generated by an open set is open. This includes all
topological OMLs, and also the projection lattices of Hilbert spaces. Finally,
we obtain a topological version of the Foulis-Randall representation theory for

One-carbon metabolism in cancer
Cells require one-carbon units for nucleotide synthesis, methylation and reductive metabolism, and these pathways support the high proliferative rate of cancer cells. As such, anti-folates, drugs that target one-carbon metabolism, have long been used in the treatment of cancer. Amino acids, such as serine are a major one-carbon source, and cancer cells are particularly susceptible to deprivation of one-carbon units by serine restriction or inhibition of de novo serine synthesis. Recent work has also begun to decipher the specific pathways and sub-cellular compartments that are important for one-carbon metabolism in cancer cells. In this review we summarise the historical understanding of one-carbon metabolism in cancer, describe the recent findings regarding the generation and usage of one-carbon units and explore possible future therapeutics that could exploit the dependency of cancer cells on one-carbon metabolism
An Ultra-High-Resolution Survey of the Interstellar ^7Li-to-^6Li Isotope Ratio in the Solar Neighborhood
In an effort to probe the extent of variations in the interstellar ^7Li/^6Li
ratio seen previously, ultra-high-resolution (R ~ 360,000), high
signal-to-noise spectra of stars in the Perseus OB2 and Scorpius OB2
Associations were obtained. These measurements confirm our earlier findings of
an interstellar ^7Li/^6Li ratio of about 2 toward o Per, the value predicted
from models of Galactic cosmic ray spallation reactions. Observations of other
nearby stars yield limits consistent with the isotopic ratio ~ 12 seen in
carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. If this ratio originally represented the gas
toward o Per, then to decrease the original isotope ratio to its current value
an order of magnitude increase in the Li abundance is expected, but is not
seen. The elemental K/Li ratio is not unusual, although Li and K are formed via
different nucleosynthetic pathways. Several proposals to account for the low
^7Li/^6Li ratio were considered, but none seems satisfactory.
Analysis of the Li and K abundances from our survey highlighted two sight
lines where depletion effects are prevalent. There is evidence for enhanced
depletion toward X Per, since both abundances are lower by a factor of 4 when
compared to other sight lines. Moreover, a smaller Li/H abundance is observed
toward 20 Aql, but the K/H abundance is normal, suggesting enhanced Li
depletion (relative to K) in this direction. Our results suggest that the
^7Li/^6Li ratio has not changed significantly during the last 4.5 billion years
and that a ratio ~ 12 represents most gas in the solar neighborhood. In
addition, there appears to be a constant stellar contribution of ^7Li,
indicating that one or two processes dominate its production in the Galaxy.Comment: 54 pages, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
