Isolation of Cellulolytic Microfungi Involved in Wood-Waste Decomposition: Prospects for Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Cellulosic Wastes
Wood-wastes from dump-sites at Okobaba Saw-mills on the western part of the Lagos lagoon were examined for
cellulolytic microorganisms. Cellulolytic microfungi were isolated from the wastes using minimal salt agar medium containing
0.2% (w/v) crystalline cellulose, sugarcane pulp, corn cob or saw-dust as sole carbon/energy source. The colonies of cellulolytic
microfungi which appeared on the plates increased in size and number as the incubation period (days) increased.
Among the fungal isolates were two pathogenic Aspergilli (A flavus and A fumigatus), three different black Aspergilli (herein
designated as A.niger I, A.niger II and A.niger III), Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium species and Penicillium species. Cell-free filtrates
of 7 â day cultures of A.flavus, A.niger I, A.niger II, B. cinerea and P.species grown on the minimal salt broth supplemented with
crystalline cellulose as sole carbon/energy source showed very significant CMâcellulase activity. P. species gave a very high
value that was over 4 times the value for the closest organism, A.niger II. There is a good propect for cellulase production using
the virgin strain of P. species isolated from the wood-wastes
Interferometric method for determining the sum of the flexoelectric coefficients (e1+e3) in an ionic nematic material
The time-dependent periodic distortion profile in a nematic liquid crystal phase grating has been measured from the displacement of tilt fringes in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. A 0.2âHz squarewave voltage was applied to alternate stripe electrodes in an interdigitated electrode geometry. The time-dependent distortion profile is asymmetric with respect to the polarity of the applied voltage and decays with time during each half period due to ionic shielding. This asymmetry in the response allows the determination of the sum of the flexoelectric coefficients (e1+e3) using nematic continuum theory since the device geometry does not possess inherent asymmetry
Autonomous flight and remote site landing guidance research for helicopters
Automated low-altitude flight and landing in remote areas within a civilian environment are investigated, where initial cost, ongoing maintenance costs, and system productivity are important considerations. An approach has been taken which has: (1) utilized those technologies developed for military applications which are directly transferable to a civilian mission; (2) exploited and developed technology areas where new methods or concepts are required; and (3) undertaken research with the potential to lead to innovative methods or concepts required to achieve a manual and fully automatic remote area low-altitude and landing capability. The project has resulted in a definition of system operational concept that includes a sensor subsystem, a sensor fusion/feature extraction capability, and a guidance and control law concept. These subsystem concepts have been developed to sufficient depth to enable further exploration within the NASA simulation environment, and to support programs leading to the flight test
New analytic running coupling in QCD: higher loop levels
The properties of the new analytic running coupling are investigated at the
higher loop levels. The expression for this invariant charge, independent of
the normalization point, is obtained by invoking the asymptotic freedom
condition. It is shown that at any loop level the relevant function has
the universal behaviors at small and large values of the invariant charge. Due
to this feature the new analytic running coupling possesses the universal
asymptotics both in the ultraviolet and infrared regions irrespective of the
loop level. The consistency of the model considered with the general definition

Merit - An evaluation tool for 100% renewable energy provision
Islands represent an interesting challenge in terms of energy supply. A great deal of work has been carried out to look at specific aspects of this issue on different islands. Unfortunately, results from one study cannot be easily applied to other islands due to island-specific resources and energy-use profiles. A quantitative evaluation tool (MERIT) is presented here, which is able to match half-hourly energy demands (heat, electricity, hot water and transport) with local supplies. The program examines the energy balance on any scale, from an individual building through to an entire country, thereby providing a powerful and generic aid to decision making. This paper demonstrates the generality and usefulness of MERIT by using it to analyse the options for creating an energy-autonomous community on a typical, small island off the west coast of Scotland. Results are presented showing the feasibility of accomplishing 100% renewable provision on this island using available local resources
Spin polarization control by electric stirring: proposal for a spintronic device
We propose a spintronic device to generate spin polarization in a mesoscopic
region by purely electric means. We show that the spin Hall effect in
combination with the stirring effect are sufficient to induce measurable spin
polarization in a closed geometry. Our device structure does not require the
application of magnetic fields, external radiation or ferromagnetic leads, and
can be implemented in standard semiconducting materials
