A computer program to calculate radiating viscous stagnation streamline flow with strong blowing
A computer program (program LEE) has been developed to calculate the fully coupled solution of the radiating viscous stagnation streamline flow with strong blowing. The report describes the digital computer program, including FORTRAN IV listing, flow charts, instructions for the user, and a test case with input and output. Program LEE is available through COSMIC
Rocket experiments for spectral estimation of electron density fine structure in the auroral and equatorial ionosphere and preliminary results
Sounding rockets equipped to monitor electron density and its fine structure were launched into the auroral and equatorial ionosphere in 1980 and 1983, respectively. The measurement electronics are based on the Langmuir probe and are described in detail. An approach to the spectral analysis of the density irregularities is addressed and a software algorithm implementing the approach is given. Preliminary results of the analysis are presented
Rocket radio measurement of electron density in the nighttime ionosphere
One experimental technique based on the Faraday rotation effect of radio waves is presented for measuring electron density in the nighttime ionosphere at midlatitudes. High frequency linearly-polarized radio signals were transmitted to a linearly-polarized receiving system located in a spinning rocket moving through the ionosphere. Faraday rotation was observed in the reference plane of the rocket as a change in frequency of the detected receiver output. The frequency change was measured and the information was used to obtain electron density data. System performance was evaluated and some sources of error were identified. The data obtained was useful in calibrating a Langmuir probe experiment for electron density values of 100/cu cm and greater. Data from two rocket flights are presented to illustrate the experiment
Defining correctness conditions for concurrent objects in multicore architectures
Correctness of concurrent objects is defined in terms of conditions that determine allowable relationships between histories of a concurrent object and those of the corresponding sequential object. Numerous correctness conditions have been proposed over the years, and more have been proposed recently as the algorithms implementing concurrent objects have been adapted to cope with multicore processors with relaxed memory architectures. We present a formal framework for defining correctness conditions for multicore architectures, covering both standard conditions for totally ordered memory and newer conditions for relaxed
memory, which allows them to be expressed in uniform manner, simplifying comparison. Our framework distinguishes between order and commitment properties, which in turn enables a hierarchy of correctness conditions to be established. We consider the Total Store Order (TSO) memory model in detail, formalise known conditions for TSO using our framework, and develop sequentially consistent variations of these. We present a work-stealing deque for TSO memory that is not linearizable, but is correct with respect to these new conditions. Using our framework, we identify a new non-blocking compositional condition, fence consistency, which lies between known conditions for TSO, and aims to capture the intention of a programmer-specified fence
An implicit finite-difference solution to the viscous shock layer, including the effects of radiation and strong blowing
An implicit finite-difference scheme is developed for the fully coupled solution of the viscous, radiating stagnation-streamline equations, including strong blowing. Solutions are presented for both air injection and injection of carbon-phenolic ablation products into air at conditions near the peak radiative heating point in an earth entry trajectory from interplanetary return missions. A detailed radiative-transport code that accounts for the important radiative exchange processes for gaseous mixtures in local thermodynamic and chemical equilibrium is utilized in the study. With minimum number of assumptions for the initially unknown parameters and profile distributions, convergent solutions to the full stagnation-line equations are rapidly obtained by a method of successive approximations. Damping of selected profiles is required to aid convergence of the solutions for massive blowing. It is shown that certain finite-difference approximations to the governing differential equations stabilize and improve the solutions. Detailed comparisons are made with the numerical results of previous investigations. Results of the present study indicate lower radiative heat fluxes at the wall for carbonphenolic ablation than previously predicted
Drawing Boundaries
In “On Drawing Lines on a Map” (1995), I suggested that the different ways we have of drawing lines on maps open up a new perspective on ontology, resting on a distinction between two sorts of boundaries: fiat and bona fide. “Fiat” means, roughly: human-demarcation-induced. “Bona fide” means, again roughly: a boundary constituted by some real physical discontinuity. I presented a general typology of boundaries based on this opposition and showed how it generates a corresponding typology of the different sorts of objects which boundaries determine or demarcate. In this paper, I describe how the theory of fiat boundaries has evolved since 1995, how it has been applied in areas such as property law and political geography, and how it is being used in contemporary work in formal and applied ontology, especially within the framework of Basic Formal Ontology
A semantic-based system for querying personal digital libraries

Copyright @ Springer 2004.The decreasing cost and the increasing availability of new technologies is enabling people to create their own digital libraries. One of the main topic in personal digital libraries is allowing people to select interesting information among all the different digital formats available today (pdf, html, tiff, etc.). Moreover the increasing availability of these on-line libraries, as well as the advent of the so called Semantic Web [1], is raising the demand for converting paper documents into digital, possibly semantically annotated, documents. These motivations drove us to design a new system which could enable the user to interact and query documents independently from the digital formats in which they are represented. In order to achieve this independence from the format we consider all the digital documents contained in a digital library as images. Our system tries to automatically detect the layout of the digital documents and recognize the geometric regions of interest. All the extracted information is then encoded with respect to a reference ontology, so that the user can query his digital library by typing free text or browsing the ontology
The Extreme Compact Starburst in MRK 273
Images of neutral Hydrogen 21cm absorption and radio continuum emission at
1.4 GHz from Mrk 273 were made using the Very Long Baseline Array and Very
Large Array. These images reveal a gas disk associated with the northern
nuclear region with a diameter of 0.5'' (370 pc), at an inclination angle of
53deg. The radio continuum emission is composed of a diffuse component plus a
number of compact sources. This morphology resembles those of nearby, lower
luminosity starburst galaxies. These images provide strong support for the
hypothesis that the luminosity of the northern source is dominated by an
extreme compact starburst. The HI 21cm absorption shows an east-west gradient
in velocity of 450 km/s across 0.3'' (220 pc), implying an enclosed mass of 2e9
M_solar, comparable to the molecular gas mass. The brightest of the compact
sources may indicate radio emission from an active nucleus (AGN), but this
source contributes only 3.8% to the total flux density of the northern nuclear
region. The HI 21cm absorption toward the southeast radio nucleus suggests
infall at 200 km/s on scales < 40 pc, and the southwest near IR nucleus is not

Electron-electron interaction corrections to the thermal conductivity in disordered conductors
We evaluate the electron-electron interaction corrections to the electronic
thermal conductivity in a disordered conductor in the diffusive regime. We use
a diagrammatic many-body method analogous to that of Altshuler and Aronov for
the electrical conductivity. We derive results in one, two and three dimensions
for both the singlet and triplet channels, and in all cases find that the
