Social games in a social network
We study an evolutionary version of the Prisoner's Dilemma game, played by
agents placed in a small-world network. Agents are able to change their
strategy, imitating that of the most successful neighbor. We observe that
different topologies, ranging from regular lattices to random graphs, produce a
variety of emergent behaviors. This is a contribution towards the study of
social phenomena and transitions governed by the topology of the community
The significance of 'the visit' in an English category-B prison: Views from prisoners, prisoners' families and prison staff
A number of claims have been made regarding the importance of prisoners staying in touch with their family through prison visits, firstly from a humanitarian perspective of enabling family members to see each other, but also regarding the impact of maintaining family ties for successful rehabilitation, reintegration into society and reduced re-offending. This growing evidence base has resulted in increased support by the Prison Service for encouraging the family unit to remain intact during a prisonerâs incarceration. Despite its importance however, there has been a distinct lack of research examining the dynamics of families visiting relatives in prison. This paper explores perceptions of the same event â the visit â from the familiesâ, prisonersâ and prison staffs' viewpoints in a category-B local prison in England. Qualitative data was collected with 30 prisonersâ families, 16 prisoners and 14 prison staff, as part of a broader evaluation of the visitorsâ centre. The findings suggest that the three parties frame their perspective of visiting very differently. Prisonersâ families often see visits as an emotional minefield fraught with practical difficulties. Prisoners can view the visit as the highlight of their time in prison and often have many complaints about how visits are handled. Finally, prison staff see visits as potential security breaches and a major organisational operation. The paper addresses the current gap in our understanding of the prison visit and has implications for the Prison Service and wider social policy
Regional White Matter Integrity Differentiates Between Vascular Dementia and Alzheimer Disease
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Considerable clinical and radiological overlap between vascular dementia (VaD) and Alzheimer disease (AD) often makes the diagnosis difficult. Diffusion-tensor imaging studies showed that fractional anisotropy (FA) could be a useful marker for white matter changes. This study aimed to identify regional FA changes to identify a biomarker that could be used to differentiate VaD from AD. METHODS: T1-weighted and diffusion-tensor imaging scans were obtained in 13 VaD patients, 16 AD patients, and 22 healthy elderly controls. We used tract-based spatial statistics to study regional changes in fractional anisotropy in AD, VaD, and elderly controls. We then used probabilistic tractography to parcel the corpus callosum in 7 regions according to its connectivity with major cerebral cortices using diffusion-tensor imaging data set. We compared the volume and mean FA in each set of transcallosal fibers between groups using ANOVA and then applied a discriminant analysis based on FA and T2-weighted imaging measures. RESULTS: FA reduction in forceps minor was the most significant area of difference between AD and VaD. Segmentation of the corpus callosum using tractography and comparison of FA changes of each segment confirmed the FA changes in transcallosal prefrontal tracts of patients with VaD when compared to AD. The best discriminant model was the combination of transcallosal prefrontal FA and Fazekas score with 87.5% accuracy, 100% specificity, and 93% sensitivity (P<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Integrating mean FA in the forceps minor to the Fazekas score provides a useful quantitative marker for differentiating AD from VaD
Dynamics of vortex tangle without mutual friction in superfluid He
A recent experiment has shown that a tangle of quantized vortices in
superfluid He decayed even at mK temperatures where the normal fluid was
negligible and no mutual friction worked. Motivated by this experiment, this
work studies numerically the dynamics of the vortex tangle without the mutual
friction, thus showing that a self-similar cascade process, whereby large
vortex loops break up to smaller ones, proceeds in the vortex tangle and is
closely related with its free decay. This cascade process which may be covered
with the mutual friction at higher temperatures is just the one at zero
temperature Feynman proposed long ago. The full Biot-Savart calculation is made
for dilute vortices, while the localized induction approximation is used for a
dense tangle. The former finds the elementary scenario: the reconnection of the
vortices excites vortex waves along them and makes them kinked, which could be
suppressed if the mutual friction worked. The kinked parts reconnect with the
vortex they belong to, dividing into small loops. The latter simulation under
the localized induction approximation shows that such cascade process actually
proceeds self-similarly in a dense tangle and continues to make small vortices.
Considering that the vortices of the interatomic size no longer keep the
picture of vortex, the cascade process leads to the decay of the vortex line
density. The presence of the cascade process is supported also by investigating
the classification of the reconnection type and the size distribution of
vortices. The decay of the vortex line density is consistent with the solution
of the Vinen's equation which was originally derived on the basis of the idea
of homogeneous turbulence with the cascade process. The obtained result is

Well-conditioned probabilistic models of this so-called resting-state activity are needed to support neuroscientific hypotheses. Exploring two specific descriptions of resting-state fMRI, namely spatial analysis and connectivity graphs, we discuss the progress brought by statistical learning techniques, but also the neuroscientific picture that they paint, and possible modeling pitfalls
Electromagnetic Dissociation of Nuclei in Heavy-Ion Collisions
Large discrepancies have been observed between measured Electromagnetic
Dissociation(ED) cross sections and the predictions of the semiclassical
Weiz\"acker-Williams-Fermi(WWF) method. In this paper, the validity of the
semiclassical approximation is examined. The total cross section for
electromagnetic excitation of a nuclear target by a spinless projectile is
calculated in first Born approximation, neglecting recoil. The final result is
expressed in terms of correlation functions and convoluted densities in
configuration space. The result agrees with the WWF approximation to leading
order(unretarded electric dipole approximation), but the method allows an
analytic evaluation of the cutoff, which is determined by the details of the
electric dipole transition charge density. Using the Goldhaber-Teller model of
that density, and uniform charge densities for both projectile and target, the
cutoff is determined for the total cross section in the nonrelativistic limit,
and found to be smaller than values currently used for ED calculations. In
addition, cross sections are calculated using a phenomenological momentum space
cutoff designed to model final state interactions. For moderate projectile
energies, the calculated ED cross section is found to be smaller than the
semiclassical result, in qualitative agreement with experiment.Comment: 28 page
