    Asking the experts : developing and validating parental diaries to assess children's minor injuries

    The methodological issues involved in parental reporting of events in children's everyday lives are discussed with reference to the development and validation of an incident diary, collecting concurrent data on minor injuries in a community study of children under eight years old. Eighty-two mothers participated in a comparison over nine days of daily telephone interviews and structured incident diaries. Telephone methods resulted in more missing data, and participants in both groups expressed a preference for the diary method. This diary was then validated on a sample of 56 preschool and school-aged children by comparing injury recording by a research health visitor with that of their mothers. Each failed to report some injuries, but there was good agreement overall, and in descriptive data on injuries reported by both. Parental diaries have the potential to provide rich data, of acceptable validity, on minor events in everyday life

    Mapping for the Masses: Accessing Web 2.0 through Crowdsourcing

    The authors describe how we are harnessing the power of web 2.0 technologies to create new approaches to collecting, mapping, and sharing geocoded data. The authors begin with GMapCreator that lets users fashion new maps using Google Maps as a base. The authors then describe MapTube that enables users to archive maps and demonstrate how it can be used in a variety of contexts to share map information, to put existing maps into a form that can be shared, and to create new maps from the bottom-up using a combination of crowdcasting, crowdsourcing, and traditional broadcasting. The authors conclude by arguing that such tools are helping to define a neogeography that is essentially "mapping for the masses,'' while noting that there are many issues of quality, accuracy, copyright, and trust that will influence the impact of these tools on map-based communication

    Emulation of multivariate simulators using thin-plate splines with application to atmospheric dispersion

    It is often desirable to build a statistical emulator of a complex computer simulator in order to perform analysis which would otherwise be computationally infeasible. We propose methodology to model multivariate output from a computer simulator taking into account output structure in the responses. The utility of this approach is demonstrated by applying it to a chemical and biological hazard prediction model. Predicting the hazard area which results from an accidental or deliberate chemical or biological release is imperative in civil and military planning and also in emergency response. The hazard area resulting from such a release is highly structured in space and we therefore propose the use of a thin-plate spline to capture the spatial structure and fit a Gaussian process emulator to the coefficients of the resultant basis functions. We compare and contrast four different techniques for emulating multivariate output: dimension-reduction using (i) a fully Bayesian approach with a principal component basis, (ii) a fully Bayesian approach with a thin-plate spline basis, assuming that the basis coefficients are independent, and (iii) a “plug-in” Bayesian approach with a thin-plate spline basis and a separable covariance structure; and (iv) a functional data modeling approach using a tensor-product (separable) Gaussian process. We develop methodology for the two thin-plate spline emulators and demonstrate that these emulators significantly outperform the principal component emulator. Further, the separable thin-plate spline emulator, which accounts for the dependence between basis coefficients, provides substantially more realistic quantification of uncertainty, and is also computationally more tractable, allowing fast emulation. For high resolution output data, it also offers substantial predictive and computational ad- vantages over the tensor-product Gaussian process emulator

    Robust point correspondence applied to two and three-dimensional image registration

    Accurate and robust correspondence calculations are very important in many medical and biological applications. Often, the correspondence calculation forms part of a rigid registration algorithm, but accurate correspondences are especially important for elastic registration algorithms and for quantifying changes over time. In this paper, a new correspondence calculation algorithm, CSM (correspondence by sensitivity to movement), is described. A robust corresponding point is calculated by determining the sensitivity of a correspondence to movement of the point being matched. If the correspondence is reliable, a perturbation in the position of this point should not result in a large movement of the correspondence. A measure of reliability is also calculated. This correspondence calculation method is independent of the registration transformation and has been incorporated into both a 2D elastic registration algorithm for warping serial sections and a 3D rigid registration algorithm for registering pre and postoperative facial range scans. These applications use different methods for calculating the registration transformation and accurate rigid and elastic alignment of images has been achieved with the CSM method. It is expected that this method will be applicable to many different applications and that good results would be achieved if it were to be inserted into other methods for calculating a registration transformation from correspondence

    Extended Emission from Cygnus X-3 Detected with Chandra

    We have discovered extended X-ray emission from the microquasar Cyg X-3 in archival Chandra X-ray Observatory observations. A 5" wide structure lies approximately 16" to the NE from the core point source and may be extended in that direction. This angular scale corresponds to a physical extent of roughly 0.8 lyr, at a distance of 2.5 lyr from Cyg X-3 (assuming a 10 kpc distance). The flux varied by a factor of 2.5 during the four months separating two of the observations, indicating significant substructure. The peak 2-10 keV luminosity was about 5e34 ergs/s. There may also be weaker, extended emission of similar scale oppositely directed from the core, suggesting a bipolar outflow. This structure is not part of the dust scattering halo, nor is it caused by the Chandra point spread function.     Polarimetric Properties of the Crab Pulsar between 1.4 and 8.4 GHz

    New polarimetric observations of the Crab pulsar at frequencies between 1.4 and 8.4 GHz are presented. Additional pulse components discovered in earlier observations (Moffett & Hankins 1996, astro-ph/9604163) are found to have high levels of linear polarization, even at 8.4 GHz. No abrupt sweeps in position angle are found within pulse components; however, the position angle and rotational phase of the interpulse do change dramatically between 1.4 and 4.9 GHz. The multi-frequency profile morphology and polarization properties indicate a non-standard origin of the emission. Several emission geometries are discussed, but the one favored locates sites of emission both near the pulsar surface and in the outer magnetosphere.Comment: 20 pages, 7 postscript figures, uses aaspp4 Latex style.
