Fish That Is Appetizing

Get PDF
The cooking of fish depends largely on taste, for various methods may be used in preparing the same kind of fish. Halibut may be baked, boiled, fried or broiled and be quite as delicious in one way as another. This rule is also true of nearly every kind of white fleshed fish. Fish that contain quite an amount of oil as mackeral, herring, salmon, and shad are best suited for broiling, baking or planking. They contain so much oil distributed thru the flesh that it requires a dry, intense heat to make them palatable. Salmon is an exception, being at its best when boiled. An old saying declares, Small fish should swim twice- once in water, once in oil. It is a good proverb for the cook to remember because it applies well to every tiny fish

The Struggle For Woman Suffrage in Kansas

Get PDF
Although the women of Kansas have had the right to vote for only about forty-five years, most women today take it for granted and look upon it as something which they have always had. This thesis shows the steps by which women received full suffrage tram the very men whom they often antagonized by their methods, tactics, and attitudes. The author has also attempted to show that the right was not easily gained, but required the work of three intensive campaigns. In many instances, the greatest problem was the indifference of women themselves. The data used in this thesis came from the newspaper files, books, and manuscript materials of the Kans as state Historical Society Library at Topeka, the newspaper files, books, and documents materials of the Forsyth Library at Fort Hays Kansas State College, Hays, and from personal interviews with people who remembered the last campaign. In the appendix are tables and a map included to show the vote by counties on the proposed amendment in each election in which it was being considered. Although it is impossible to equate the actual effect of woman suffrage on Kansas government, the author has pointed out some possible results of woman suffrage. Chief among these are an increased interest in government on the part of women as well as a responsible use of the suffrage

Risk of mature B-cell neoplasms and precursor conditions after joint replacement : a report from the Haematological Malignancy Research Network

Get PDF
Associations between previous joint replacement and B-cell lymphoid malignancies have been reported, but despite numerous reports, associations with the disease subtypes have received little attention. Using a UK-based register of haematological malignancies and a matched general population-based cohort, joint replacements from linked hospital inpatient records were examined. Cases diagnosed 2009-2015 who were aged 50 years or more were included; 8,013 mature B-cell neoplasms comprising myeloma (n=1,763), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL, n=1,676), chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL, n=1,594), marginal zone lymphoma (MZL, n=957), follicular lymphoma (FL, n=725), and classical Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL, n=255), together with monoclonal gammopathy of uncertain significance (MGUS, n=2,138) and monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (MBL, n=632). Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were calculated relative to 10 age- and sex-matched controls using conditional logistic regression. Having had a joint replacement before diagnosis was associated with myeloma (OR=1.3, 95%CI 1.1-1.5, p=0.008) and MGUS (OR=1.3, 95%CI 1.1-1.5, p<0.001). Excluding replacements in the year before diagnosis, the MGUS risk remained, elevated where two or more joints were replaced (OR=1.5, 95%CI 1.2-2.0, p=0.001), with hip (OR=1.2, 95%CI 1.0-1.5, p=0.06) or knee replacements (OR=1.5, 95%CI 1.2-1.8, p<0.001). Associations with CHL and two or more replacements (OR=2.7, 95%CI 1.3-5.6, p=0.005) or hip replacements (OR=1.9, 95%CI 1.0-3.4, p=0.04); and between DLBCL and knee replacements (OR=1.3, 95%CI 1.0-1.6, p=0.04) were also observed. This study reports for the first time a relationship between joint replacements and MGUS; while absolute risks of disease are low and not of major public health concern, these findings warrant further investigation. Protocol for a mixed-method study to assess chronic cough in patients with renal cell carcinoma: the prevalence, impact on quality of life, trigger and potential clinical application of chronic cough as an early screening tool in patients with kidney cancer

Get PDF
Introduction: Cough as a symptom of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) was first described by Creevy in 1935, and despite one (unpublished) study suggesting it may affect 31% of these patients, as well as cough being discussed in forums for patients with kidney cancer, few clinicians are aware of this association. The cough has been described as unusual in nature, resolving rapidly after treatment with nephrectomy/embolisation but returning if the tumour recurs. // Methods and analysis: A prospective study using a questionnaire will identify the prevalence of cough in patients with suspected or confirmed RCC attending the Specialist Centre for Kidney Cancer (London, UK). A longitudinal study in a representative sample of these patients, using EQ-5D-5L and Leicester Cough Questionnaires, together with the use of semi-structured interviews with patients, will identify the impact of cough in addition to having a diagnosis of suspected or confirmed RCC on quality of life. To investigate cough mechanisms, a pilot study using cough hypersensitivity testing will be performed on patients with RCC, with and without a cough. Clinical samples (urine, blood, phlegm and breath condensate) from patients with RCC, with and without a cough, will be collected and analysed for the presence of substances known to trigger or enhance cough and compared with the results obtained from healthy volunteers. Ethics and dissemination: Ethical approval has been granted (UK HR REC 22/PR/0791 dated 25/08/2022). Study outputs will be presented and published nationally and internationally at relevant conferences. This study will establish the prevalence of cough in patients with suspected or confirmed kidney cancer and support the education of clinicians to consider this diagnosis in patients with chronic cough (eg, recommending protocols to include both kidneys when investigating respiratory symptoms with chest CT scans). If substances known to trigger or enhance cough are identified and elevated in clinical samples, this research could offer potential targets for treatment for this distressing symptom. // Trial registration number: NIHR CRN portfolio CPMS ID:53 372

Hodgkin lymphoma detection and survival : findings from the Haematological Malignancy Research Network

Background Hodgkin lymphoma is usually detected in primary care with early signs and symptoms, and is highly treatable with standardised chemotherapy. However, late presentation is associated with poorer outcomes.Aim To investigate the relationship between markers of advanced disease, emergency admission, and survival following a diagnosis of classical Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL).Design & setting The study was set within a sociodemographically representative UK population-based patient cohort of ~4 million, within which all patients were tracked through their care pathways, and linked to national data obtained from Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) and deaths.Method All 971 patients with CHL newly diagnosed between 1 September 2004–31 August 2015 were followed until 18th December 2018.Results The median diagnostic age was 41.5 years (range 0–96 years), 55.2% of the patients were male, 31.2% had stage IV disease, 43.0% had a moderate–high or high risk prognostic score, and 18.7% were admitted via the emergency route prior to diagnosis. The relationship between age and emergency admission was U-shaped: more likely in patients aged <25 years and ≥70 years. Compared to patients admitted via other routes, those presenting as an emergency had more advanced disease and poorer 3-year survival (relative survival 68.4% [95% confidence interval {CI} = 60.3 to 75.2] versus 89.8% [95% CI = 87.0 to 92.0], respectively [P<0.01]). However, after adjusting for clinically important prognostic factors, no difference in survival remained. Conclusion These findings suggest that CHL survival as a whole could be increased by around 4% if the cancer in patients who presented as an emergency had been detected at the same point as in other patients

Acute Administration of Non-Classical Estrogen Receptor Agonists Attenuates Ischemia-Induced Hippocampal Neuron Loss in Middle-Aged Female Rats

Pretreatment with 17beta-estradiol (E2) is profoundly neuroprotective in young animals subjected to focal and global ischemia. However, whether E2 retains its neuroprotective efficacy in aging animals, especially when administered after brain insult, is largely unknown. We examined the neuroprotective effects of E2 and two agonists that bind to non-classical estrogen receptors, G1 and STX, when administered after ischemia in middle-aged rats after prolonged ovarian hormone withdrawal. Eight weeks after ovariectomy, middle-aged female rats underwent 10 minutes of global ischemia by four vessel occlusion. Immediately after reperfusion, animals received a single infusion of either E2 (2.25 microg), G1 (50 microg) or STX (50 microg) into the lateral ventricle (ICV) or a single systemic injection of E2 (100 microg/kg). Surviving pyramidal neurons in the hippocampal CA1 were quantified 1 week later. E2 and both agonists that target non-classical estrogen receptors (G1 and STX) administered ICV at the time of reperfusion provided significant levels of neuroprotection, with 55-60% of CA1 neurons surviving vs 15% survival in controls. A single systemic injection of a pharmacological dose of E2 also rescued approximately 50% of CA1 pyramidal neurons destined to die. To determine if E2 and G1 have similar mechanisms of action in hippocampal neurons, we compared the ability of E2 and G1 to modify CA1 pyramidal neuron responses to excitatory inputs from the Schaffer collaterals recorded in hippocampal slices derived from female rats not subjected to global ischemia. E2 and G1 (10 nM) significantly potentiated pyramidal neuron responses to excitatory inputs when applied to hippocampal slices. These findings suggest (1) that middle-aged female rats retain their responsiveness to E2 even after a long period of hormone withdrawal, (2) that non-classical estrogen receptors may mediate the neuroprotective actions of E2 when given after ischemia, and (3) that the neuroprotective efficacy of estrogens may be related to their modulation of synaptic activity in hippocampal slices
