Black Holes and Vacuum Cleaners: Using Metaphor, Relevance, and Inquiry in Labels for Space Images
This study extended research on the development of explanatory labels for
astronomical images for the non-expert lay public. The research questions
addressed how labels with leading questions/metaphors and relevance to everyday
life affect comprehension of the intended message for deep space images, the
desire to learn more, and the aesthetic appreciation of images. Participants
were a convenience sample of 1,921 respondents solicited from a variety of
websites and through social media who completed an online survey that used four
high-resolution images as stimuli: Sagittarius A*, Solar Flare, Cassiopeia A,
and the Pinwheel Galaxy (M101). Participants were randomly assigned initially
to 1 of 3 label conditions: the standard label originally written for the
image, a label with a leading question containing a metaphor related to the
information for the image, or a label that contained a fact about the image
relevant to everyday life. Participants were randomly assigned to 1 image and
compared all labels for that image. Open-ended items at various points asked
participants to pose questions to a hypothetical astronomer. Main findings were
that the relevance condition was significantly more likely to increase wanting
to learn more; the original label was most likely to increase overall
appreciation; and, smart phone users were more likely to want to learn more and
report increased levels of appreciation. Results are discussed in terms of the
need to examine individual viewer characteristics and goals in creating

On February 18, 2015 CNN published a reported stating that Western women were leaving their homes to join ISIS because of a social media campaign featuring pictures of kittens and Nutella. This reported propagated the notion that women who join jihadist organizations are brainwashed or feeble minded. The reality is not so simple. This paper explores the motives women may have for joining ISIS through comparison to the motivations that drove women to partake in other violent jihadist organizations\u27 activities
PLATE-INJECTION INTO A SEPARATED SUPERSONIC BOUNDARY-LAYER
The structure of a supersonic laminar boundary layer near a flat plate is examined when fluid is injected into it with velocity of O(ε3U*[infty infinity]) over a distance of O(L). Here U*[infty infinity] is the undisturbed fluid velocity, L the length of the plate and ε−8 is a representative Reynolds number. An essential requirement of the theory is that separation must have occurred upstream of the blow through a free interaction. It is assumed that between separation and the blow the reversed flow region has a wedge-like shape, of semi-angle in which O(ε2), the fluid velocity has decayed to insignificant values at points just upstream of the blowing region. The blown fluid fills this wedge and the favourable pressure gradient necessary to drive this fluid downstream causes the boundary of the wedge to curve until at the end of the blow it is parallel to the plate. Explicit expressions for the pressure variation and boundary-layer thickness are worked out using a (crucially) modified form of the Cole-Aroesty theory. The relation. between the strong injection studied here and massive injection, when the blowing velocity is of O(U*[infty infinity]), is also discussed
Geo-cultural influences and critical factors in inter-firm collaboration
Inter-firm collaboration and other forms of inter-organisational activity are increasingly the means by which technological innovation occurs. This paper draws on evidence from two studies of the same set of firms to examine the conduct of collaborations over time across different contexts. The purpose is to examine the critical factors associated with successful collaboration and explore the importance of the geo-cultural context in understanding the conduct of inter-firm collaboration. The conceptual framework draws on two main sources: - Storper’s concept of ‘conventions’ of identity and participation and Lorenz’s classification of different types of knowledge. These are used to indicate the kinds and sources of adjustments required for successful collaboration
Requirements and preliminary design for a general purpose real-time executive for flight computers
The requirements and preliminary design of a general purpose, real-time executive computers program for flight computers are provided. A description and the requirements are included for the major elements of the executive: an initialization model, a task scheduler, and an interrupt handler. Task priorities and various process interrupts are discussed. System parameters and variables are identified which make the design adaptable to various flight computer and applicaton specifications
WinBUGSio: A SAS Macro for the Remote Execution of WinBUGS
This is a macro which facilitates remote execution of WinBUGS from within SAS. The macro pre-processes data for WinBUGS, writes the WinBUGS batch-script, executes this script and reads in output statistics from the WinBUGS log-file back into SAS native format. The user specifies the input and output file names and directory path as well as the statistics to be monitored in WinBUGS. The code works best for a model that has already been set up and checked for convergence diagnostics within WinBUGS. An obvious extension of the use of this macro is for running simulations where the input and output files all have the same name but all that differs between simulation iterations is the input dataset. The functionality and syntax of the macro call are described in this paper and illustrated using a simple linear regression model.
Development and evaluation of ion exchange hollow fibers
An ion exchange hollow fiber impregnated with a vinylpyridine base was developed. The basic exchange resin used to impart the necessary permselectivity to the hollow fiber is a copolymer of vinylpyridine and dibromoethane prepared according to Rembaum. A slight pressure was used to impregnate the exchange monomer mixture into the void structure of the fiber wall, and with maintenance of subambient temperatures, the rate of cross-linking is slow enough to allow the growing polymer to permeate the wall structure before significant increase in polymer molecular weight. These ion exchange fibers are produced from polyacrylonitrile hollow fibers with an appropriate wall structure that enables the impregnating vinylpyridine monomer mixture to form a truly semipermeable anion barrier after curing
Choice of FDMA/SCPC access technique for aeronautical satellite voice system
A worldwide aeronautical mobile satellite system is about to become operational. The system architecture and access methods have been debated extensively, resulting in the selection of Time Division Multiplexing/Time Division Multiple Access (TDM/TDMA) access for packet data, and Single Channel Per Carrier (SCPC) for voice. These have become standards for airline use, and also satisfy the known requirements of ICAO for safety related communications. Voice communications are expected to absorb a high proportion of satellite bandwidth and power in the future. Here, it is explained why INMARSAT selected Frequency Division Multiple Access/SCPC satellite access for this application
