SNAP-8 post shutdown gamma radiation approximations

    Get PDF
Detector responses were calculated for normalized sources in the Perkins and King energy group structure for a SNAP 8 power system on a NASA space station. Gamma decay rates were then calculated by using an expanded, updated list of isotopic decay data, and from these, actual detector responses were found for the SNAP 8 system. The results indicate that energy-dependent calculations must be made to determine decay gamma dose rates for actual reactor configurations. A simplified method for making these calculations has been devised

    The chemistry of Venus' atmosphere

    Get PDF
A model for the Venus atmosphere involving photochemistry of oxygen, hydrogen, chlorine and sulfur species is presented. Sulfur reaction schemes and hydrogen and chlorine reaction schemes were included. The impact of sulfur on the oxygen budget and the subsequent production of H2SO4 molecules for the Venus cloud deck were explored. A major new reaction scheme for production of H2SO4 molecules involving sulfur and oxygen chemistry was established shown to dominate over the odd hydrogen scheme proposed earlier. The efficiency of the scheme in formation of H2SO4 is only about 50%, with the remaining sulfur residing in SO2 molecules. The calculated downward flux of H2SO4 may be sufficient to maintain a steady state sulfuric acid cloud if the resident time of H2SO4 droplets in the cloud is as long as a few years. If however, the resident time is half a year or shorter, additional chemistry capable of more efficient conversion of SO2 to SO3 is required

Charge exchange lifetimes for ions in the magnetosphere

    Get PDF
Latest and best measurements of physical quantities involved in complete calculation of the charge exchange lifetime of mirroring magnetospheric ions are coalesced and summarized. It is critical that the charge exchange lifetimes for ions be known as accurately as possible in order to apply the charge exchange mechanism to ion phenomena within the earth's magnetosphere

Dependence of the charge exchange lifetimes on mirror latitude

    Get PDF
The dependence of the charge exchange lifetimes on the mirror latitude for ions mirroring off the geomagnetic equator was re-computed using the improved hydrogen distribution models. The Chamberlain model was used to define the spatial distribution of the neutral hydrogen environment through which the ring current ions traverse. The resultant dependence of the charge exchange lifetime on mirror latitude is best fitted by the approximation that contains the charge exchange lifetime for equatorial particles

Correlated versus Uncorrelated Stripe Pinning: the Roles of Nd and Zn Co-Doping

We investigate the stripe pinning produced by Nd and Zn co-dopants in cuprates via a renormalization group approach. The two dopants play fundamentally different roles in the pinning process. While Nd induces a correlated pinning potential that traps the stripes in a flat phase and suppresses fluctuations, Zn pins the stripes in a disordered manner and promotes line meandering. We obtain the zero temperature phase diagram and compare our results with neutron scattering data. A good agreement is found between theory and experiment.Comment: To appear at the proceedings of the LLD2K Conference Tsukuba, July 2000, Japan. 4 pages, 2 figure
