Integrated specifications for abstract systems
Journal ArticleStructural specifications define an abstract object as a composition of other abstract objects. Behavioral specifications define an abstract object in terms of its associated operations. Integrated specifications are a combination of structural and behavioral specifications which are more powerful than either used alone. By providing four naming mechanisms, integrated specifications hide the details of how objects are represented and accessed on storage devices. The four naming mechanisms allow objects to be named in terms of the operations previously applied to them, the unique attributes they possess, the relationships they participate in, and the categories they belong to. Integrated specifications can specify the structure of more abstract systems than the relational database model, while also characterizing dynamic properties. Examples are given of integrated specifications for quide, symboltable and expression. These specifications are simple and guide, but do not constrain, the implementor in designing refinements. By exploiting abstract structure in specifications, common aspects of inter-object communication can be suppressed and only salient differences emphasized. Integrated specifications can make a significant contribution to the useability, reliability and efficiency of computer systems
Origin of Hawaiian Tholeiites: Trace Element Constraints
We report here geochemical studies of Hawaiian tholeiites and ultramafic xenoliths from Salt Lake Crater, Oahu. We focus attention on tholeiitic basalts that comprise the bulk of Hawaiian volcanoes. When the samples are screened to include only those lying neat the log-MgO (about 7 percent) end of olivine-control lines (Wright, 1971), tholeiites from individual volcanoes are remarkably uniform. On this basis, we show that, for tholeiites from six volcanoes, systematic geochemical differences exist that cannot be attributed to differentiation of these magmas from a common parental magma. Apparently there have been important differences in the processes of magma generation, source composition, or source mineral constitution.
Partial melting calculations based on REE contents emphasize these distinctions, but unique melting models are not presented. In these models, relative REE abundances in the source material is a major uncertainty. Nd isotopic studies of Hawaiian basalts require systematic differences in Sm/Nd for the source material of each volcano. Furthermore, the time-integrated Sm/Nd of the sources must be less than that in chondrites. REE analyses of Hawaiian garnet lherzolite xenoliths show that they have chondritic to light REE-enriched relative abundances with absolute contents (for light REE) about 3 to 8 times chondrites. These data obviously conflict with interpretations of the Nd isotopic data. Several possibilities follow: (1) the available xenoliths are not parental to tholeiite, (2) our simple interpretation of the Nd isotopic data is wrong, and (3) the source regions may have been invaded at geologically recent times by a light REE-enriched phase, in which case the xenoliths may represent the course material. If the xenoliths are characteristic of the source, partial melting calculations indicate that the tholeiites may be generated by 15 to 20 percent melting of garnet lherzolite and at the sane tune conform to constraints imposed by the REE and Ni contents and the partitioning of Fe and Mg between melts and residues. We propose that the primary tholeiitic magmas contain no more than about 12 percent MgO, and that erupted magmas probably fractionated less than 10 to 15 percent of olivine during ascent and storage in high-level chambers
Searching for Planets in the Hyades. I. The Keck Radial Velocity Survey
We describe a high-precision radial velocity search for jovian-mass
companions to main sequence stars in the Hyades star cluster. The Hyades
provides an extremely well controlled sample of stars of the same age, the same
metallicity, and a common birth and early dynamical environment. This sample
allows us to explore the dependence of the process of planet formation on only
a single independent variable: the stellar mass. In this paper we describe the

Accuracy of commercial geocoding: assessment and implications
BACKGROUND: Published studies of geocoding accuracy often focus on a single geographic area, address source or vendor, do not adjust accuracy measures for address characteristics, and do not examine effects of inaccuracy on exposure measures. We addressed these issues in a Women's Health Initiative ancillary study, the Environmental Epidemiology of Arrhythmogenesis in WHI. RESULTS: Addresses in 49 U.S. states (n = 3,615) with established coordinates were geocoded by four vendors (A-D). There were important differences among vendors in address match rate (98%; 82%; 81%; 30%), concordance between established and vendor-assigned census tracts (85%; 88%; 87%; 98%) and distance between established and vendor-assigned coordinates (mean Ï [meters]: 1809; 748; 704; 228). Mean Ï was lowest among street-matched, complete, zip-coded, unedited and urban addresses, and addresses with North American Datum of 1983 or World Geodetic System of 1984 coordinates. In mixed models restricted to vendors with minimally acceptable match rates (A-C) and adjusted for address characteristics, within-address correlation, and among-vendor heteroscedasticity of Ï, differences in mean Ï were small for street-type matches (280; 268; 275), i.e. likely to bias results relying on them about equally for most applications. In contrast, differences between centroid-type matches were substantial in some vendor contrasts, but not others (5497; 4303; 4210) p(interaction )< 10(-4), i.e. more likely to bias results differently in many applications. The adjusted odds of an address match was higher for vendor A versus C (odds ratio = 66, 95% confidence interval: 47, 93), but not B versus C (OR = 1.1, 95% CI: 0.9, 1.3). That of census tract concordance was no higher for vendor A versus C (OR = 1.0, 95% CI: 0.9, 1.2) or B versus C (OR = 1.1, 95% CI: 0.9, 1.3). Misclassification of a related exposure measure â distance to the nearest highway â increased with mean Ï and in the absence of confounding, non-differential misclassification of this distance biased its hypothetical association with coronary heart disease mortality toward the null. CONCLUSION: Geocoding error depends on measures used to evaluate it, address characteristics and vendor. Vendor selection presents a trade-off between potential for missing data and error in estimating spatially defined attributes. Informed selection is needed to control the trade-off and adjust analyses for its effects
Development of a fidelity measure for research on the effectiveness of the Ayres Sensory Integration intervention.
OBJECTIVE: We developed a reliable and valid fidelity measure for use in research on Ayres Sensory Integration (ASI) intervention.
METHOD: We designed a fidelity instrument to measure structural and process aspects of ASI intervention. Because scoring of process involves subjectivity, we conducted a series of reliability and validity studies on the process section. Raters were trained to score therapist strategies observed in video recordings of adult-child dyads. We examined content validity through expert ratings.
RESULTS: Reliability of the process section was strong for total fidelity score (ICC = .99, Cronbach\u27s alpha = .99) and acceptable for most items. Total score significantly differentiated ASI from four alternative interventions. Expert ratings indicated strong agreement that items in the structural and process sections represent ASI intervention. CONCLUSION. The Ayres Sensory Integration Fidelity Measure has strong content validity. The process section is reliable and valid when scored by trained raters with expertise in ASI
Chemical Cartography with APOGEE: Large-scale Mean Metallicity Maps of the Milky Way
We present Galactic mean metallicity maps derived from the first year of the
SDSS-III APOGEE experiment. Mean abundances in different zones of
Galactocentric radius (0 < R < 15 kpc) at a range of heights above the plane (0
< |z| < 3 kpc), are derived from a sample of nearly 20,000 stars with
unprecedented coverage, including stars in the Galactic mid-plane at large
distances. We also split the sample into subsamples of stars with low and
high-[{\alpha}/M] abundance ratios. We assess possible biases in deriving the
mean abundances, and find they are likely to be small except in the inner
regions of the Galaxy. A negative radial gradient exists over much of the
Galaxy; however, the gradient appears to flatten for R < 6 kpc, in particular
near the Galactic mid-plane and for low-[{\alpha}/M] stars. At R > 6 kpc, the
gradient flattens as one moves off of the plane, and is flatter at all heights
for high-[{\alpha}/M] stars than for low-[{\alpha}/M] stars. Alternatively,
these gradients can be described as vertical gradients that flatten at larger
Galactocentric radius; these vertical gradients are similar for both low and
high-[{\alpha}/M] populations. Stars with higher [{\alpha}/M] appear to have a
flatter radial gradient than stars with lower [{\alpha}/M]. This could suggest
that the metallicity gradient has grown steeper with time or, alternatively,
that gradients are washed out over time by migration of stars.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, submitted to A
The Hubble Deep Field South Flanking Fields
As part of the Hubble Deep Field South program, a set of shorter 2-orbit
observations were obtained of the area adjacent to the deep fields. The WFPC2
flanking fields cover a contiguous solid angle of 48 square arcminutes.
Parallel observations with the STIS and NICMOS instruments produce a patchwork
of additional fields with optical and near-infrared (1.6 micron) response.
Deeper parallel exposures with WFPC2 and NICMOS were obtained when STIS
observed the NICMOS deep field. These deeper fields are offset from the rest,
and an extended low surface brightness object is visible in the deeper WFPC2
flanking field. In this data paper, which serves as an archival record of the
project, we discuss the observations and data reduction, and present SExtractor
source catalogs and number counts derived from the data. Number counts are
broadly consistent with previous surveys from both ground and space. Among
other things, these flanking field observations are useful for defining slit
masks for spectroscopic follow-up over a wider area around the deep fields, for
studying large-scale structure that extends beyond the deep fields, for future
supernova searches, and for number counts and morphological studies, but their
ultimate utility will be defined by the astronomical community.Comment: 46 pages, 15 figures. Images and full catalogs available via the

Tracing chemical evolution over the extent of the Milky Way's Disk with APOGEE Red Clump Stars
We employ the first two years of data from the near-infrared, high-resolution
SDSS-III/APOGEE spectroscopic survey to investigate the distribution of
metallicity and alpha-element abundances of stars over a large part of the
Milky Way disk. Using a sample of ~10,000 kinematically-unbiased red-clump
stars with ~5% distance accuracy as tracers, the [alpha/Fe] vs. [Fe/H]
distribution of this sample exhibits a bimodality in [alpha/Fe] at intermediate
metallicities, -0.9<[Fe/H]<-0.2, but at higher metallicities ([Fe/H]=+0.2) the
two sequences smoothly merge. We investigate the effects of the APOGEE
selection function and volume filling fraction and find that these have little
qualitative impact on the alpha-element abundance patterns. The described
abundance pattern is found throughout the range 5<R<11 kpc and 0<|Z|<2 kpc
across the Galaxy. The [alpha/Fe] trend of the high-alpha sequence is
surprisingly constant throughout the Galaxy, with little variation from region
to region (~10%). Using simple galactic chemical evolution models we derive an
average star formation efficiency (SFE) in the high-alpha sequence of ~4.5E-10
1/yr, which is quite close to the nearly-constant value found in
molecular-gas-dominated regions of nearby spirals. This result suggests that
the early evolution of the Milky Way disk was characterized by stars that
shared a similar star formation history and were formed in a well-mixed,
turbulent, and molecular-dominated ISM with a gas consumption timescale (1/SFE)
of ~2 Gyr. Finally, while the two alpha-element sequences in the inner Galaxy
can be explained by a single chemical evolutionary track this cannot hold in
the outer Galaxy, requiring instead a mix of two or more populations with

Using increased trust in medical researchers to increase minority recruitment: The RECRUIT cluster randomized clinical trial
While extensive literature exists on barriers and strategies to increase minority participation in clinical trials, progress is limited. Few strategies were evaluated in randomized trials. We studied the impact of RECRUIT, a trust-based, cluster randomized minority recruitment trial layered on top of four traditional NIH-funded parent trials (BMT CTN, CABANA, PACES, STEADY-PD III; fifty specialty sites). RECRUIT was conducted from July 2013 through April 2017. Intervention sites implemented trust-based approaches customized to individual sites, promoting relationships between physician-investigators and minority-serving physicians and their minority patients. Control sites implemented only parent trials\u27 recruitment procedures. Adjusting for within-site clustering, we detected no overall intervention effect, odds ratio 1.3 (95% confidence limits 0.7,2.4). Heterogeneity among parent trials may have obscured the effect. Of the four parent trials, three enrolled more minorities in intervention versus control sites. CABANA odds ratio = 4.2 (adjusted 95%CL 1.5,11.3). PACES intervention sites enrolled 63% (10/16) minorities; control sites enrolled one participant in total, a minority, yielding an incalculable odds ratio. STEADY-PD III odds ratio = 2.2 (adjusted 95%CL 0.6,8.5). BMT CTN odds ratio \u3c 1, 0.8 (adjusted 95%CL 0.4,1.8). In conclusion, RECRUIT findings suggest the unique trust-based intervention increased minority recruitment to intervention trials in (3/4) of studied trials. Physician-investigators\u27 participation was critical to recruitment success. Lack of commitment to minority recruitment remained a barrier for some physician-investigators, especially in control sites. We recommend prospective physician investigators commit to minority recruitment activities prior to selection as site investigators and trial funding include some compensation for minority recruitment efforts.TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.govNCT01911208
