Palestinian Evangelical Christian Music in Bethlehem, Israel/Palestine

    Get PDF
Often the story of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is portrayed as Jewish vs. Muslim, Hebrew vs. Arab. There is little room in the international dialogue for minorities such as Arab Christians. Though Palestinians have a rich culture of Arabic musical and poetic heritage, they are unable to produce their own new songs. In this study I interviewed three members of Immanuel Evangelical Church on their experiences and opinions on local Christian worship. The findings show that Palestinian Christians may feel unable to write worship music because of a prevalent feeling of inadequacy and a lack of musical training. I propose several courses of action that could encourage local believers to write new worship music by the church and for the church

Blurring Boundaries: Transforming Place, Policies, and Partnerships for Postsecondary Education Attainment in Metropolitan Areas

By 2020, more than six out of 10 U.S. jobs will require postsecondary training. Despite a slight increase in college attainment nationally in recent years, the fastest-growing minority groups are being left behind. Only 25 and 18 percent of Blacks and Hispanics, respectively, hold at least an associate's degree, compared with 39 percent of Whites. Without substantial increases in educational attainment, particularly for our nation's already underserved groups, the United States will have a difficult time developing a robust economy.Home to 65 percent of Americans, and a majority of all African Americans and Hispanics (74 and 79 percent, respectively), the 100 largest metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) can play a strong role in developing this nation's workforce. In fact, to reach a national attainment target that meets our workforce needs, more than half of college degrees could be generated from the these cities. The majority of degrees needed among African-American and Hispanic adults could also be produced in MSAs.Clearly, investing in and organizing around the potential of metropolitan areas is critical, and the stakes have never been higher. Yet the current funding climate requires strategic public and private partnerships to invest in education innovation and human capital development in order to have the most robust impact on sustainable national growth. For this study, the Institute for Higher Education (IHEP) sought to follow up on its previous work examining MSA educational attainment rates by further exploring policies that either inhibit or facilitate degree production, and identifying metropolitan-level, cross-section collaborations that help local leaders contribute to national completion goals

    Place-Based Marketing Opportunities for Vermont

    Get PDF
Vermont is widely recognized as a national leader in the place-based marketing of the state’s food products. This has been accomplished through the work of Vermont farmers and producers, and the support and programs of the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets and a variety of nonprofit organizations. Together, these groups have been able to take advantage of the connection made by many consumers between Vermont products and the idea of quality. This connection has often enabled Vermont products to command a price premium, both in markets within the state and in other areas of the country. Preliminary market research suggests that consumers in two northeastern U.S. markets may be interested in a Geographic Indicator label to identify Vermont products and that feelings of connectedness with Vermont and Vermont food products exists outside of the state. This paper addresses four objectives for place-based marketing in Vermont: The market definition, the market potential, product attributes and authentication, and the potential impact of place-based marketing on the Vermont brand

An Online Adapted Yoga Program for Adults with Parkinson\u27s Disease

    Get PDF
Background: Parkinson’s (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting nearly 10 million people and ~1 million Americans (Parkinson’s Foundation, 2022). PD affects motor and nonmotor functions, increasing disability over time (Dutta, 2020). Research shows that yoga improves motor function, balance, and functional mobility, reduces anxiety and depression, and increases QoL for patients with PD (Ban et al., 2021, Green et al., 2019). Problem/Purpose: Individuals with PD experience decreased function in many areas of occupational performance and lack access to alternative options for yoga, such as a resource for an online adapted yoga program. The purpose of this project was to develop an online adapted yoga program resource for people with PD and increase accessibility. The project hypothesis was that developing this online resource would assist in incorporating yoga into their daily routine and sustain their practice. In addition, the goal of this project was to promote occupational engagement of those with neuromuscular impairments like PD. Methods: The project consisted of five phases: the pre-development phase, planning phase, development phase, recording phase, and test/launch phase. Each phase expanded on the previous one or concurrently on each other and served as a guide throughout the creation of the online resource. Results: An online resource of an adapted yoga program was developed to assist individuals in incorporating yoga into their daily routine and sustain their practice. This online resource was also developed to improve accessibility by allowing individuals to practice yoga from the comfort of their own homes.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2023/1025/thumbnail.jp

Practicing Sustainability: Illuminating ‘Use’ in Wearing Clothes

    Get PDF
Aspects of the ordinary in everyday dressing remain elusive to fashion studies, meaning the life of what Judy Attfield calls ‘design in the lower case’ escapes notice. In this article, the authors assemble a practice-oriented perspective to illuminate ‘wearing’ as an outcome of sets of commonplace and routine practices related to dressing, that wear a garment in and out over time, and enhance the visibility of clothing use. The central example is a research project that tests the theory of loosening the meaning of clean by trialling alternative laundering techniques to understand the transition to sustain-ability, or less resource-intensive competencies in the spectrum of clothing use. The promise of an interdisciplinary conceptual framework that draws from ‘theories of practice’ at the intersection of cultural studies, sociology and design is also tested as appropriate for the analysis of the quotidian realm of wearing and laundering; the analysis is particularly assisted with sustainable design research about the transition toward sustainable ways of living such as the development of ‘slow fashion’

Comparison of Vaginal Misoprostol and Oral Misoprostol for promoting Cervical Ripening and Inducing labor

    Get PDF
Background: Labor induction is the stimulation of the uterus to contract before labor begins to have a vaginal birth through the use of medications. Labor induction in the later stages of pregnancy is used to prevent complications when the mother or baby is at risk. Medications such as misoprostol (Cytotec) are used in inductions for cervical ripening to allow smoother dilation. Ripening the cervix is a method used to help soften and thin out the cervix to facilitate childbirth. The benefit of using misoprostol is that it can be administered several routes including oral, vaginal, sublingual and buccal. Induction of labor is a life-saving intervention that can reduce adverse outcomes. Purpose: This systematic literature review aims to determine the most effective route of administration of misoprostol to successfully induce labor in term pregnant women. Methods: The PRISMA flow diagram was followed to obtain results. A literature search was conducted using resources including PubMed and EBSCO Information Services as well as specific internet searches. Filters were applied to limit retrievals to only randomized control trials, controlled clinical trials, and experimental studies. Other inclusion criteria were the administration of oral misoprostol, vaginal misoprostol, buccal misoprostol, or sublingual misoprostol, a non-scarred uterus, gestational weeks ≥ 37, English language, and healthcare data from the year 2017 to present. The Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice Model was used for an appraisal process to select twenty articles to be used in our review. Preliminary results suggest the vaginal route is more effective than oral misoprostol in performing successful labor inductions in the shortest amount of time. Results: Final results will be presented at the symposiu
