Observation of electronic and atomic shell effects in gold nanowires
The formation of gold nanowires in vacuum at room temperature reveals a
periodic spectrum of exceptionally stable diameters. This is identified as
shell structure similar to that which was recently discovered for alkali metals
at low temperatures. The gold nanowires present two competing `magic' series of
stable diameters, one governed by electronic structure and the other by the
atomic packing.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Steady-state spin densities and currents
This article reviews steady-state spin densities and spin currents in
materials with strong spin-orbit interactions. These phenomena are intimately
related to spin precession due to spin-orbit coupling which has no equivalent
in the steady state of charge distributions. The focus will be initially on
effects originating from the band structure. In this case spin densities arise
in an electric field because a component of each spin is conserved during
precession. Spin currents arise because a component of each spin is continually
precessing. These two phenomena are due to independent contributions to the
steady-state density matrix, and scattering between the conserved and
precessing spin distributions has important consequences for spin dynamics and
spin-related effects in general. In the latter part of the article extrinsic
effects such as skew scattering and side jump will be discussed, and it will be
shown that these effects are also modified considerably by spin precession.
Theoretical and experimental progress in all areas will be reviewed
Tachyonic preheating using 2PI-1/N dynamics and the classical approximation
We study the process of tachyonic preheating using approximative quantum
equations of motion derived from the 2PI effective action. The O(N) scalar
(Higgs) field is assumed to experience a fast quench which is represented by an
instantaneous flip of the sign of the mass parameter. The equations of motion
are solved numerically on the lattice, and the Hartree and 1/N-NLO
approximations are compared to the classical approximation. Classical dynamics
is expected to be valid, since the occupation numbers can rise to large values
during tachyonic preheating. We find that the classical approximation performs
excellently at short and intermediate times, even for couplings in the larger
region currently allowed for the SM Higgs. This is reassuring, since all
previous numerical studies of tachyonic preheating and baryogenesis during
tachyonic preheating have used classical dynamics. We also compare different
initializations for the classical simulations.Comment: 32 pages, 21 figures. Published version: Some details added, section

Isotopic Production Cross Sections in Proton-Nucleus Collisions at 200 MeV
Intermediate mass fragments (IMF) from the interaction of Al,
Co and Au with 200 MeV protons were measured in an angular range
from 20 degree to 120 degree in the laboratory system. The fragments, ranging
from isotopes of helium up to isotopes of carbon, were isotopically resolved.
Double differential cross sections, energy differential cross sections and
total cross sections were extracted.Comment: accepted by Phys. Rev.
Investigation of the Domain Wall Fermion Approach to Chiral Gauge Theories on the Lattice
We investigate a recent proposal to construct chiral gauge theories on the
lattice using domain wall fermions. We restrict ourselves to the finite volume
case, in which two domain walls are present, with modes of opposite chirality
on each of them. We couple the chiral fermions on only one of the domain walls
to a gauge field. In order to preserve gauge invariance, we have to add a
scalar field, which gives rise to additional light mirror fermion and scalar
modes. We argue that in an anomaly free model these extra modes would decouple
if our model possesses a so-called strong coupling symmetric phase. However,
our numerical results indicate that such a phase most probably does not exist.

Numerical study of lattice index theorem usingimproved cooling and overlap fermions
We investigate topological charge and the index theorem on finite lattices
numerically. Using mean field improved gauge field configurations we calculate
the topological charge Q using the gluon field definition with -improved cooling and an -improved field strength tensor
. We also calculate the index of the massless overlap fermion
operator by directly measuring the differences of the numbers of zero modes
with left- and right--handed chiralities. For sufficiently smooth field
configurations we find that the gluon field definition of the topological
charge is integer to better than 1% and furthermore that this agrees with the
index of the overlap Dirac operator, i.e., the Atiyah-Singer index theorem is
satisfied. This establishes a benchmark for reliability when calculating
lattice quantities which are very sensitive to topology.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure
On Convergence of the Inexact Rayleigh Quotient Iteration with the Lanczos Method Used for Solving Linear Systems
For the Hermitian inexact Rayleigh quotient iteration (RQI), the author has
established new local general convergence results, independent of iterative
solvers for inner linear systems. The theory shows that the method locally
converges quadratically under a new condition, called the uniform positiveness
condition. In this paper we first consider the local convergence of the inexact
RQI with the unpreconditioned Lanczos method for the linear systems. Some
attractive properties are derived for the residuals, whose norms are
's, of the linear systems obtained by the Lanczos method. Based on
them and the new general convergence results, we make a refined analysis and
establish new local convergence results. It is proved that the inexact RQI with
Lanczos converges quadratically provided that with a
constant . The method is guaranteed to converge linearly provided
that is bounded by a small multiple of the reciprocal of the
residual norm of the current approximate eigenpair. The results are
fundamentally different from the existing convergence results that always
require , and they have a strong impact on effective
implementations of the method. We extend the new theory to the inexact RQI with
a tuned preconditioned Lanczos for the linear systems. Based on the new theory,
we can design practical criteria to control to achieve quadratic
convergence and implement the method more effectively than ever before.

Low-lying fermion modes, topology and light hadrons in quenched QCD
We explore the properties of low lying eigenmodes of fermions in the quenched
approximation of lattice QCD. The fermion action is a recently proposed overlap
action and has exact chiral symmetry. We find that chiral zero-eigenvalue modes
are localized in space and their positions correlate strongly with the
locations (as defined through the density of pure gauge observables) of
instantons of the appropriate charge. Nonchiral modes are also localized with
peaks which are strongly correlated with the positions of both charges of
instantons. These correlations slowly die away as the fermion eigenvalue rises.
Correlators made of quark propagators restricted to these modes closely
reproduce ordinary hadron correlators at small quark mass in many channels. Our
results are in qualitative agreement with the expectations of instanton liquid
models.Comment: 21 pages, Revtex, 21 postscript figures. COLO-HEP-45
No evidence of an 11.16 MeV 2+ state in 12C
An experiment using the 11B(3He,d)12C reaction was performed at iThemba LABS
at an incident energy of 44 MeV and analyzed with a high energy-resolution
magnetic spectrometer, to re-investigate states in 12C published in 1971. The
original investigation reported the existence of an 11.16 MeV state in 12C that
displays a 2+ nature. In the present experiment data were acquired at
laboratory angles of 25-, 30- and 35- degrees, to be as close to the c.m.
angles of the original measurements where the clearest signature of such a
state was observed. These new low background measurements revealed no evidence
of the previously reported state at 11.16 MeV in 12C
