Between bastion and open house:on another form of uniformity

Na het nieuw geelblauwe uniform van 2014, worstelt de Nederlandse politie op dit moment met een meer fundamenteleverandering dan de uiterlijke verschijningsvorm: de politielijkt op zoek naar andere uniformiteit. Politiek-bestuurlijke verhoudingenzijn met de Nationale Politie gewijzigd, diverse andere organisatiesen bedrijven begeven zich op het domein van beveiliging en handhaving,steeds meer verbanden ontstaan met uiteenlopende organisaties,en relaties met burgers in een multiculturele samenleving vormeneen uitdaging. Enerzijds vraagt dit om een vorm van uniformiteit diehouvast biedt – de politie probeert zich in de maatschappij eenduidigte positioneren – en tegelijkertijd is ruimte nodig. Daar waar de politievroeger gesloten bleef voor de buitenwereld, wil ze nu openstaanvoor eenieder in de maatschappij en streeft ze naar een heterogeneresamenstelling van het korps zelf. Dit essay gaat in op de huidige wijze waarop de politie hiermee omgaat en de valkuilen die daarbij horen. Alternatieve ontwikkelperspectieven worden hierbij aangereikt

The police care... (for later)?

We weten het allemaal: politie, zorg en onderwijs kampen met stevige personeelstekorten. Door toenemende krapte op de arbeidsmarkt wordt het steeds lastiger om voldoende en goed opgeleid personeel te vinden. Doordat deze organisaties en sectoren tegelijkertijd geconfronteerd worden met steeds meer nieuwe en ingewikkelde maatschappelijke problemen neemt de druk op de toch al schaarse capaciteit van deze organisaties enorm toe. Het resultaat: zieke medewerkers en/of onvoldoende dienstverlening en zorg richting burgers. Zonder een paradigmashift in het denken rond veiligheid, zorg en onderwijs blijven deze problemen groeien. De auteurs van dit artikel pleiten voor een andere manier van sturen op de politie vanuit kabinet, ministeries en het gezag. Een benadering waarin de maatschappelijke problematiek en de (impact op de) burger meer centraal staan, en er meer gewerkt wordt vanuit een integrale aanpak samen met andere uitvoeringsinstanties. Met als doel: een gezonde en veilige leefomgeving waarin burgers zich kunnen ontwikkelen en ontplooien. Een op het onderliggende maatschappelijke vraagstuk gerichte benadering vanuit de politie kan wellicht het verschil gaan maken. In dit essay wordt dit toegelicht

Identification of Two Protein-Signaling States Delineating Transcriptionally Heterogeneous Human Medulloblastoma

Summary: The brain cancer medulloblastoma consists of different transcriptional subgroups. To characterize medulloblastoma at the phosphoprotein-signaling level, we performed high-throughput peptide phosphorylation profiling on a large cohort of SHH (Sonic Hedgehog), group 3, and group 4 medulloblastomas. We identified two major protein-signaling profiles. One profile was associated with rapid death post-recurrence and resembled MYC-like signaling for which MYC lesions are sufficient but not necessary. The second profile showed enrichment for DNA damage, as well as apoptotic and neuronal signaling. Integrative analysis demonstrated that heterogeneous transcriptional input converges on these protein-signaling profiles: all SHH and a subset of group 3 patients exhibited the MYC-like protein-signaling profile; the majority of the other group 3 subset and group 4 patients displayed the DNA damage/apoptotic/neuronal signaling profile. Functional analysis of enriched pathways highlighted cell-cycle progression and protein synthesis as therapeutic targets for MYC-like medulloblastoma. : Using peptide phosphorylation profiling, Zomerman et al. identify two medulloblastoma phosphoprotein-signaling profiles that have prognostic value and are potentially targetable. They find that these profiles extend across transcriptome-based subgroup borders. This suggests that diverse genetic information converges on common protein-signaling pathways and highlights protein-signaling as a unique information layer. Resting-State Functional Connectivity Characteristics of Resilience to Traumatic Stress in Dutch Police Officers

BackgroundInsights into the neurobiological basis of resilience can have important implications for the prevention and treatment of stress-related disorders, especially in populations that are subjected to high-stress environments. Evaluating large-scale resting-state networks (RSNs) can provide information regarding resilient specific brain function which may be useful in understanding resilience. This study aimed to explore functional connectivity patterns specific for (high) resilience in Dutch policemen after exposure to multiple work-related traumatic events. We investigated resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) of the salience network (SN), limbic network, and the default-mode network (DMN).MethodsResting-state functional MRI scans were obtained from trauma-exposed executive personnel of the Dutch police force and non-trauma-exposed recruits from the police academy. Participants were divided into three groups: a resilient group (n = 31; trauma exposure; no psychopathology), a vulnerable group (n = 32; trauma exposure, psychopathology), and a control group (n = 19; no trauma exposure, no psychopathology). RSFC of the three networks of interest was compared between these groups, using an independent component analysis and a dual regression approach.ResultsWe found decreased resilience-specific positive RSFC of the salience network with several prefrontal regions. The DMN and limbic network RFSC did not show resilience-specific patterns.ConclusionThis study shows a differential RSFC specific for resilient police officers. This differential RSFC may be related to a greater capacity for internal-focused thought and interoceptive awareness, allowing more effective higher-order responses to stress in highly resilient individuals
