Men in the Czech Republic: A Few Questions and Thoughts on Studying (Some) Men

Raises questions & themes relevant for introduction of men's studies or critical studies on men & masculinities in the Czech Republic. The general issue of gender studies, & the situation & context of men in the Czech Republic, are focal. The former deals with the theoretical basis for research on men, while the latter explores empirical data on men that may be used in further research. The author's empirical inquiry into the life histories of men in the Czech Republic is described, highlighting different men (nonmanipulative, lacking the need to control others, emotional) to challenge the existence of a single normative (hegemonic) masculinity. In accordance with contemporary sources from Anglo Saxon social science literature, the existence of a plurality & colorful forms of masculine identity is suggested, & implications for gender studies in the Czech Republic are discussed

Transgender Parent Differentiation: A Heuristic Phenomenological Study

Transgender individuals go through their intrapersonal differentiation between covert “I” (expressed gender) and overt “I” (assigned gender), often unnoticed by family members before their coming out. Consequently, their coming out rockets anxiety in the family system and the process of differentiation of transgender parents seem to go through its unique path to search for equilibrium. Recent social and clinical studies about transgender parents have paid attention to the experience and challenges of the gender transition process, social pressure, acceptance of transgender individuals in a parenting role, and readiness of families to cope with the transition of a parent (Bischof, Warnaar, Barajas, & Dhaliwal, 2011; Chung, 2016; Di Ceglie, 1998; Freedman, Tasker, & Di Ceglie, 2002; Haines, Ajayi, & Boyd, 2014; Hines, 2006; Theron & Collier, 2013; Veldorale-Griffin, 2014; White & Ettner, 2004, 2007). No research study has attempted to explore the essence of transgender parenting and the related self-differentiation process (Bowen, 1978; Kerr & Bowen, 1988). In this research, I intended to address this gap in knowledge by utilizing a heuristic phenomenological research design to explore the essence of parenting and self-differentiation of transgender parents. I used interviews with ten transgender parents, both females, and males, to embrace the elements of the lived experienced. The first conducted heuristic analysis revealed five emerging themes: Selfish Unselfishness: Becoming Me; Relationship with My Close Family: It is About Respect; Battle of Emotions: Do the Right Thing; Competence, Confidence, and Legacy: This Is How We Do It. Or Not; and Life Satisfaction: Welcome to My World. The second, qualitative data analysis, brought evidence of these qualities of self-differentiation: Balancing Individuality and Togetherness; Balancing Thoughts and Feelings; and Self-differentiation in the Expressed Gender

APPLICATION OF THERMOGRAPHY TO ANALYZE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ERGOMETER TRAINING

The work determines the degree of thermographic suitability of the method of temperature measurement in people exercising on a rowing ergometer. Thermography is gaining popularity in medical diagnostics by measuring the body temperature. Its main advantages are non-invasive, safe and comfortable for patients. It is widely used in the prevention of breast cancer and treatment of osteoarticular injuries. The basis for the use of thermography in medicine is the phenomenon of thermoregulation of living organisms and the emissive property of the skin, which is similar in value to a perfectly black body.To achieve the set goal, 10 people were trained on the rowing ergometer. During the two series of measurements (before and immediately after), the focus was on two areas of the subjects' body: upper limbs and abdomen. The thermographs obtained were analyzed taking into account the physical and physiological parameters of the players and their experience. The conclusions from them seemed to answer the thesis that the thermographic method is suitable for supporting players in planning and improving their training. It has also been shown that training on a rowing ergometer involves many muscle parties in which an increase in the released metabolic heat takes place

Inner peripheries from a distance and a close

In this article, we have tried to present the theme of inner peripheries in the Czech Republic-using studies of three small villages. In our approach, inner peripheries are defined as socially and economically disadvantaged localities. The criteria for the identification of inner peripheries include selected statistical data (17 indicators from the 2001 Population and Housing Census and changes in population between 1970 and 2004). On the basis of these criteria, inner peripheries were identified as being typically located near regional borders and on the margins of large cities. Studies of specific peripheral villages were undertaken in order to attempt to shed light on this issue from up close (i.e. qualitative research) and to illustrate deeper connections not visible in the statistical data. In particular, peripheral villages tend to be characterized by similar demographics (an aging and declining population) and history (urbanization, collectivization, changes in regional and local autonomy, etc.). We may assume that peripheral villages are home to problems associated with the quality and accessibility of work and services and also with a strong level of conservatism (i.e. lack of enterprise) among local politicians. The study has also shown that the (non)existence of schools, active civic associations and individuals can positively or negatively affect social life in villages.inner peripheries, regional development

This book is based on different approaches towards the research dealing with values. It is focused on existing values which are present in the Czech society from 1970´s untill nowadays. The basic principles of qualitative research are introduced with case studies from sociology, anthropology, ethnology and other disciplines. It is a collective work directed by Libor Prudký, each author was responsible for some chapters. Text is in Czech.values; sociology; qualitative research; Czech Republic; media studies

Faktory podmiňující vzdělanostní aspirace a vzdělanostní segregaci dívek a chlapců v českém vzdělávacím systému

The objective of this article is to contribute to the analysis of the factors that influence the educational aspirations of boys & girls in the Czech Republic & vertical inequality in the Czech education system. Drawing on Mateju & Strakova's monograph Unequal Chances in Education, the authors enhance the discussion with a look at the gender aspect of choices of educational trajectory. The authors review existing theories to present the main arguments from research on educational aspirations by gender. They point out the ambiguity of studies to date on the effect of gender in the education system, as they have often arrived at contradictory findings. The authors look at the theories in which the differences in educational aspirations are related to gender & the theoretical & empirical arguments that reject gender as a category for distinguishing educational aspirations. The authors summarize the research to date on gender segregation in the education system, & then offer their own conclusions, based on a secondary analysis of data from the PISA-L in 2003. Their results reveal, in conformity with the analysis by Mateju & Strakova, that while according to these analyses gender does not have an effect on differences in the educational aspirations of boys & girls, it does have an effect on some aspects of the resulting segregation of the education system & thus on a student's choice of secondary school
