    Disability Pension Rates Among Immigrants in Norway

    Immigrants from low-income countries are more likely than ethnic Norwegians to receive disability pensions. In a previous study in Oslo, we showed that occupational position probably accounted for all of this difference. The present article presents a study of the total population, with data on education and age at receipt of pension. Census and social security data for all persons living in Norway from 1992 to 2003 were used to identify new disability pensions to those aged 30–55 years and eligible in 1992, comprising 15.9% females and 11.4% males. Age-adjusted relative risk was 2.03 (95% CI 1.97–2.08) for non-Western males and 1.30 (1.26–1.36) for non-Western females compared with Westerners, and more than three times higher for males from North Africa/the Middle East. Education did not explain any of the risk differences, but when adjusting for age at pension receipt the differences disappeared completely. This is probably due to their being in predominantly unskilled occupations where there is also a low pension age among ethnic Norwegians

    Metacognitive Therapy Applications in Social Anxiety Disorder: An Exploratory Study of the Individual and Combined Effects of the Attention Training Technique and Situational Attentional Refocusing

    Individuals with Social Anxiety Disorder have difficulty disengaging from self-processing in social situations. Metacognitive therapy interventions for enhancing attentional control were administered to a convenience sample of 24 with a Social Anxiety Disorder diagnosis. Using a cross-over design, 11 participants were given four weekly sessions of Attention Training Technique (ATT), followed by four weekly sessions of Situational Attentional Refocusing (SAR). For the other 13 participants the two treatment components were given in the reverse order. All participants made significant reductions on interview rated and self-reported measures of social and general levels of anxiety by the end of the first intervention (either ATT or SAR). Following completion of the second treatment components, further reductions were observed and 46% (n = 11) of the total sample no longer met DSM-IV criteria for Social Anxiety Disorder diagnosis. Two large order effects were found favoring patients receiving SAR interventions first. Overall these brief techniques aimed at increasing attentional flexibility were associated with large and clinically significant changes in Social Anxiety Disorder symptoms. </jats:p

    Research productivity and academics’ conceptions of research

It discusses a study that differentiated levels of research productivity among English and Australian academics working in research-intensive environments in three broad discipline areas: science, engineering and technology; social science and humanities; and medicine and health sciences. The paper explores the different conceptions of research held by these academics in terms of their levels of research productivity, their levels of research training, whether they considered themselves an active researcher and a member of a research team, and their disciplinary differences

    Parents of preterm-born children; sources of stress and worry and experiences with an early intervention programme – a qualitative study

    Background Preterm-born children are at increased risk of adverse developmental outcomes, and their parents may experience increased stress levels. The Mother–Infant Transaction Program (MITP) is an early intervention that aims to enhance the parent–infant relationship and child development. The present study investigated differences in parents’ experience of stress and concerns about caring for their preterm-born child according to whether they participated in the programme. Parental satisfaction with the intervention was also explored. Methods As part of a follow-up study at 36 months, a randomized controlled trial of the MITP—14 parents of 11 children from the intervention group, and 17 parents of 14 children from the control group were interviewed by the use of semi-structured focus group interviews. The interviews were analysed thematically. Results The intervention parents reported that the knowledge, advice, guidance and emotional support given during the intervention made them feel less stressed and more confident, competent and secure caring for their preterm born child than they would otherwise have been. The control parents described feeling less involved and emotionally supported, and seemed more anxious about their child’s development than the intervention parents. All parents were vigilant and alert to their child’s needs and monitored developmental milestones carefully. Conclusion This qualitative exploration of the influences of the MITP revealed a positive impact of the intervention and seems to be an important educational and supportive initiative.
