High-level feature detection from video in TRECVid: a 5-year retrospective of achievements
Successful and effective content-based access to digital
video requires fast, accurate and scalable methods to determine the video content automatically. A variety of contemporary approaches to this rely on text taken from speech within the video, or on matching one video frame against others using low-level characteristics like
colour, texture, or shapes, or on determining and matching objects appearing within the video. Possibly the most important technique, however, is one which determines the presence or absence of a high-level or semantic feature, within a video clip or shot. By utilizing dozens, hundreds or even thousands of such semantic features we can support many kinds of content-based video navigation. Critically however, this depends on being able to determine whether each feature is or is not present in a video clip.
The last 5 years have seen much progress in the development of techniques to determine the presence of semantic features within video. This progress can be tracked in the annual TRECVid benchmarking activity where dozens of research groups measure the effectiveness of their techniques on common data and using an open, metrics-based approach. In this chapter we summarise the work
done on the TRECVid high-level feature task, showing the
progress made year-on-year. This provides a fairly comprehensive statement on where the state-of-the-art is regarding this important task, not just for one research group or for one approach, but across the spectrum. We then use this past and on-going work as a basis for highlighting the trends that are emerging in this area, and the questions which remain to be addressed before we can

Scotland's forgotten carbon : a national assessment of mid-latitude fjord sedimentary carbon stocks

Further seismic profiles and the CALYPSO long core were acquired within the frame of the French ECLIPSE programme with additional financial support from NERC, SAMS and the University of St Andrews.Fjords are recognised as hotspots for the burial and long-term storage of carbon (C) and potentially provide a significant climate regulation service over multiple timescales. Understanding the magnitude of marine sedimentary C stores and the processes which govern their development is fundamental to understanding the role of the coastal ocean in the global C cycle. In this study, we use the mid-latitude fjords of Scotland as a natural laboratory to further develop methods to quantify these marine sedimentary C stores on both the individual fjord and national scale. Targeted geophysical and geochemical analysis has allowed the quantification of sedimentary C stocks for a number of mid-latitude fjords and, coupled with upscaling techniques based on fjord classification, has generated the first full national sedimentary C inventory for a fjordic system. The sediments within these mid-latitude fjords hold 640.7 ± 46 Mt of C split between 295.6±52 and 345.1 ± 39 Mt of organic and inorganic C, respectively. When compared, these marine mid-latitude sedimentary C stores are of similar magnitude to their terrestrial equivalents, with the exception of the Scottish peatlands, which hold significantly more C. However, when area normalised comparisons are made, these mid-latitude fjords are significantly more effective as C stores than their terrestrial counterparts, including Scottish peatlands. The C held within Scotland’s coastal marine sediments has been largely overlooked as a significant component of the nation’s natural capital; such coastal C stores are likely to be key to understanding and constraining improved global C budgets.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
K-Space at TRECVID 2008
In this paper we describe K-Space’s participation in
TRECVid 2008 in the interactive search task. For 2008
the K-Space group performed one of the largest interactive
video information retrieval experiments conducted
in a laboratory setting. We had three institutions participating
in a multi-site multi-system experiment. In
total 36 users participated, 12 each from Dublin City
University (DCU, Ireland), University of Glasgow (GU,
Scotland) and Centrum Wiskunde and Informatica (CWI,
the Netherlands). Three user interfaces were developed,
two from DCU which were also used in 2007 as well as
an interface from GU. All interfaces leveraged the same
search service. Using a latin squares arrangement, each
user conducted 12 topics, leading in total to 6 runs per
site, 18 in total. We officially submitted for evaluation 3
of these runs to NIST with an additional expert run using
a 4th system. Our submitted runs performed around
the median. In this paper we will present an overview of
the search system utilized, the experimental setup and a
preliminary analysis of our results
Observation of an Excited Bc+ State
Using pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.5 fb-1 recorded by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of s=7, 8, and 13 TeV, the observation of an excited Bc+ state in the Bc+π+π- invariant-mass spectrum is reported. The observed peak has a mass of 6841.2±0.6(stat)±0.1(syst)±0.8(Bc+) MeV/c2, where the last uncertainty is due to the limited knowledge of the Bc+ mass. It is consistent with expectations of the Bc∗(2S31)+ state reconstructed without the low-energy photon from the Bc∗(1S31)+→Bc+γ decay following Bc∗(2S31)+→Bc∗(1S31)+π+π-. A second state is seen with a global (local) statistical significance of 2.2σ (3.2σ) and a mass of 6872.1±1.3(stat)±0.1(syst)±0.8(Bc+) MeV/c2, and is consistent with the Bc(2S10)+ state. Active ageing, pensions and retirement in the UK
The ageing population has led to increasing concerns about pensions and their future
sustainability. Much of the dominant policy discourse around ageing and pension provision
over the last decade has focussed on postponing retirement and prolonging employment.
These measures are central to productive notions of ‘active ageing’. Initially the paper briefly
sets out the pension developments in the UK. Then it introduces active ageing and active
ageing policy, exploring its implications for UK pension provision. It demonstrates that a
more comprehensive active ageing framework, which incorporates a life-course perspective,
has the potential to assist the UK to respond to the challenges of an ageing population. In
doing so it needs to highlight older people as an economic and social resource, and reduce
barriers to older people’s participation in society
Global dataset of soil organic carbon in tidal marshes
Tidal marshes store large amounts of organic carbon in their soils. Field data quantifying soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks provide an important resource for researchers, natural resource managers, and policy-makers working towards the protection, restoration, and valuation of these ecosystems. We collated a global dataset of tidal marsh soil organic carbon (MarSOC) from 99 studies that includes location, soil depth, site name, dry bulk density, SOC, and/or soil organic matter (SOM). The MarSOC dataset includes 17,454 data points from 2,329 unique locations, and 29 countries. We generated a general transfer function for the conversion of SOM to SOC. Using this data we estimated a median (± median absolute deviation) value of 79.2 ± 38.1 Mg SOC ha−1 in the top 30 cm and 231 ± 134 Mg SOC ha−1 in the top 1 m of tidal marsh soils globally. This data can serve as a basis for future work, and may contribute to incorporation of tidal marsh ecosystems into climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies and policies
Comparison of Sequential Three-Drug Regimens as Initial Therapy for HIV-1 Infection
BACKGROUND The optimal sequencing ofantiretroviral regimens for the treatment of infection with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is unknown. We compared several different antiretroviral treatment strategies. METHODS This multicenter, randomized, partially double-blind trial used a factorial design to compare pairs of sequential three-drug regimens, starting with a regimen including zidovudine and lamivudine or a regimen including didanosine and stavudine in combination with either nelfinavir or efavirenz. The primary end point was the length of time to the failure ofthe second three-drug regimen. RESULTS A total of 620 subjects who had not previously received antiretroviral therapy were followed for a median of 2. 3 years. Starting with a three-drug regimen containing efavirenz combined with zidovudine and lamivudine (but not efavirenz combined with didanosine and stavudine) appeared to delay the failure ofthe second regimen, as compared with starting with a regimen containing nelfinavir (hazard ratio for failure ofthe second regimen, 0.71; 95 percent confidence interval, 0.48 to 1.06), as well as to delay the second virologic failure (hazard ratio, 0.56; 95 percent confidence interval, 0.29 to 1.09), and significantly delayed the failure ofthe first regimen (hazard ratio, 0.39) and the firstvirologic failure (hazard ratio, 0.34). Starting with zidovudine and lamivudine combined with efavirenz (but not zidovudine and lamivudine combined with nelfinavir) appeared to delay the failure of the second regimen, as compared with starting with didanosine and stavudine (hazard ratio, 0.68), and significantly delayed both the first and the second virologic failures (hazard ratio for the firstvirologic failure, 0.39; hazard ratio for the second virologic failure, 0.47), as well as the failure ofthe first regimen (hazard ratio, 0.35). The initial use of zidovudine, lamivudine, and efavirenz resulted in a shorter time to viral suppression. CONCLUSIONS The efficacy ofantiretroviral drugs depends on how they are combined. The combination of zidovudine, lamivudine, and efavirenz is superior to the other antiretroviral regimens used as initial therapy in this study
