Unusual light spectra from a two-level atom in squeezed vacuum
We investigate the interaction of an atom with a multi-channel squeezed
vacuum. It turns out that the light coming out in a particular channel can have
anomalous spectral properties, among them asymmetry of the spectrum, absence of
the central peak as well as central hole burning for particular parameters. As
an example plane-wave squeezing is considered. In this case the above phenomena
can occur for the light spectra in certain directions. In the total spectrum
these phenomena are washed out.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, 3 figures (included via epsf
Predicting wildlife reservoirs and global vulnerability to zoonotic Flaviviruses.
Flaviviruses continue to cause globally relevant epidemics and have emerged or re-emerged in regions that were previously unaffected. Factors determining emergence of flaviviruses and continuing circulation in sylvatic cycles are incompletely understood. Here we identify potential sylvatic reservoirs of flaviviruses and characterize the macro-ecological traits common to known wildlife hosts to predict the risk of sylvatic flavivirus transmission among wildlife and identify regions that could be vulnerable to outbreaks. We evaluate variability in wildlife hosts for zoonotic flaviviruses and find that flaviviruses group together in distinct clusters with similar hosts. Models incorporating ecological and climatic variables as well as life history traits shared by flaviviruses predict new host species with similar host characteristics. The combination of vector distribution data with models for flavivirus hosts allows for prediction of global vulnerability to flaviviruses and provides potential targets for disease surveillance in animals and humans
Optics in the Schwarzschild space-time
Realistic modelling of radiation transfer in and from variable accretion
disks around black holes requires the solution of the problem: find the
constants of motion and equation of motion of a light-like geodesic connecting
two arbitrary points in space. Here we give the complete solution of this
problem in the Schwarzschild space-time.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, type C orbits added, analytic solutions for

Spin transitions induced by a magnetic field in quantum dot molecules
We present a theoretical study of magnetic field driven spin transitions of
electrons in coupled lateral quantum dot molecules. A detailed numerical study
of spin phases of artificial molecules composed of two laterally coupled
quantum dots with N=8 electrons is presented as a function of magnetic field,
Zeeman energy, and the detuning using real space Hartree-Fock Configuration
Interaction (HF-CI) technique. A microscopic picture of quantum Hall
ferromagnetic phases corresponding to zero and full spin polarization at
filling factors and , and ferrimagnetic phases resulting from
coupling of the two dots, is presented.Comment: 12 pages, 18 figure
Application of a New Non-Linear Least Squares Velocity Curve Analysis Technique for Spectroscopic Binary Stars
Using measured radial velocity data of nine double lined spectroscopic binary
systems NSV 223, AB And, V2082 Cyg, HS Her, V918 Her, BV Dra, BW Dra, V2357
Oph, and YZ Cas, we find corresponding orbital and spectroscopic elements via
the method introduced by Karami & Mohebi (2007a) and Karami & Teimoorinia
(2007). Our numerical results are in good agreement with those obtained by
others using more traditional methods.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space

Practical Aspects of Automatic Orientation Analysis of Micrographs
Techniques to analyse the orientation of particulate materials as observed in the scanning electron microscope are reviewed in this paper. Emphasis is placed on digital imaging, processing, and analysis methods, but many secondary electron images are not amenable to traditional image processing as adequate thresholding is often difficult to achieve. Evaluation of the intensity gradient at each pixel offers an alternative approach, and this method is described in detail including the latest developments to generalize the technique. Practical points in the acquisition, processing and analysis of the images are considered and several images, including both synthetically generated and actual back-scattered images of soil particle arrangements are presented. A discussion of methods to display the results is included as are possible future developments
