    Hydrogen-Air-Steam Combustion Regimes In Large Volumes

    Dangerous pressure waves can be generated by the combustion of H2-air-steam mixtures if ordinary deflagrations accelerate to high speed or undergo deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT). The purpose of this paper is to estimate the potentially dangerous mixtures in large volumes. There is a limited experimental data base for flame acceleration and DDT of EL-airsteam mixtures in smaller geometries. There is concern about the possible explosive combustion in the Space Shuttle main engine exhaust duct at Vandenberg AFB. There are no relevant experimental data or valid theories at this large scale (duct width, W, ~ 10 m) to predict flame acceleration and DDT. We have estimated potentially dangerous mixtures by extrapolating correlations used at smaller scale based on the detonation cell width, X. In square ducts DDTs are possible if W/X \u3e 1. We delineate three combustion regions: nonflammable, weakly flammable, and strongly flammable and potentially detonable. The nonflammable region is the region outside the flammability limit where self-sustaining combustion cannot occur. Flammability limits are independent of scale in large volumes. The strongly flammable region, where dangerous flame acceleration or DDT is possible, is bounded by mixtures with X = 10 m. We estimate detonations are possible when there is less than 45% steam. The weakly flammable region, which lies between the other two, should support only slow combustion, where no significant pressure waves should be generated

    A Population of Compact Elliptical Galaxies Detected with the Virtual Observatory

    Compact elliptical galaxies are characterized by small sizes and high stellar densities. They are thought to form through tidal stripping of massive progenitors. However, only a handful of them were known, preventing us from understanding the role played by this mechanism in galaxy evolution. We present a population of 21 compact elliptical galaxies gathered with the Virtual Observatory. Follow-up spectroscopy and data mining, using high-resolution images and large databases, show that all the galaxies exhibit old metal-rich stellar populations different from those of dwarf elliptical galaxies of similar masses but similar to those of more massive early-type galaxies, supporting the tidal stripping scenario. Their internal properties are reproduced by numerical simulations, which result in compact dynamically hot remnants resembling the galaxies in our sample.Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables.     Preparing Future School Counselors to Work with English Language Learners

    English Language Learners (ELLs) are one of the fastest growing student groups in the United States, yet school counselors often feel unprepared to address their unique needs. To better prepare school counselors to work with ELLs, counselor educators can integrate experiential learning activities that are grounded practice. Yet, little is known about the types of work experiences school counselors encounter when working with ELL students. This phenomenological study described the experiences of eight, first year school counselors who work with ELLs. Findings inform the types of training scenarios counselor educators can use to prepare school counselors-in-training (SCIT) to work with ELL students within the context of schools

    A microbial detection array (MDA) for viral and bacterial detection

    BACKGROUND: Identifying the bacteria and viruses present in a complex sample is useful in disease diagnostics, product safety, environmental characterization, and research. Array-based methods have proven utility to detect in a single assay at a reasonable cost any microbe from the thousands that have been sequenced. METHODS: We designed a pan-Microbial Detection Array (MDA) to detect all known viruses (including phages), bacteria and plasmids and developed a novel statistical analysis method to identify mixtures of organisms from complex samples hybridized to the array. The array has broader coverage of bacterial and viral targets and is based on more recent sequence data and more probes per target than other microbial detection/discovery arrays in the literature. Family-specific probes were selected for all sequenced viral and bacterial complete genomes, segments, and plasmids. Probes were designed to tolerate some sequence variation to enable detection of divergent species with homology to sequenced organisms, and to have no significant matches to the human genome sequence. RESULTS: In blinded testing on spiked samples with single or multiple viruses, the MDA was able to correctly identify species or strains. In clinical fecal, serum, and respiratory samples, the MDA was able to detect and characterize multiple viruses, phage, and bacteria in a sample to the family and species level, as confirmed by PCR. CONCLUSIONS: The MDA can be used to identify the suite of viruses and bacteria present in complex samples

    BackgroundThe risk of developing pancreatic cancer is uncertain in patients with clinically suspected branch duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (BD-IPMN) based on the "high-risk stigmata" or "worrisome features" criteria proposed in the 2012 international consensus guidelines ("Fukuoka criteria").MethodsRetrospective case series involving patients referred for endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) of indeterminate pancreatic cysts with clinical and EUS features consistent with BD-IPMN. Rates of pancreatic cancer occurring at any location in the pancreas were compared between groups of patients with one or more Fukuoka criteria ("Highest-Risk Group", HRG) and those without these criteria ("Lowest-Risk Group", LRG).ResultsAfter exclusions, 661 patients comprised the final cohort (250 HRG and 411 LRG patients), 62% female with an average age of 67 years and 4 years of follow up. Pancreatic cancer, primarily adenocarcinoma, occurred in 60 patients (59 HRG, 1 LRG). Prevalent cancers diagnosed during EUS, immediate surgery, or first year of follow up were found in 48/661 (7.3%) of cohort and exclusively in HRG (33/77, 42.3%). Using Kaplan-Meier method, the cumulative incidence of cancer at 7 years was 28% in HRG and 1.2% in LRG patients (P<0.001).ConclusionsThis study supports using Fukuoka criteria to stratify the immediate and long-term risks of pancreatic cancer in presumptive BD-IPMN. The risk of pancreatic cancer was highest during the first year and occurred exclusively in those with "high-risk stigmata" or "worrisome features" criteria. After the first year all BD-IPMN continued to have a low but persistent cancer risk

    MORESANE: MOdel REconstruction by Synthesis-ANalysis Estimators. A sparse deconvolution algorithm for radio interferometric imaging

    (arXiv abridged abstract) The current years are seeing huge developments of radio telescopes and a tremendous increase of their capabilities. Such systems make mandatory the design of more sophisticated techniques not only for transporting, storing and processing this new generation of radio interferometric data, but also for restoring the astrophysical information contained in such data. In this paper we present a new radio deconvolution algorithm named MORESANE and its application to fully realistic simulated data of MeerKAT, one of the SKA precursors. This method has been designed for the difficult case of restoring diffuse astronomical sources which are faint in brightness, complex in morphology and possibly buried in the dirty beam's side lobes of bright radio sources in the field. MORESANE is a greedy algorithm which combines complementary types of sparse recovery methods in order to reconstruct the most appropriate sky model from observed radio visibilities. A synthesis approach is used for the reconstruction of images, in which the synthesis atoms representing the unknown sources are learned using analysis priors. We apply this new deconvolution method to fully realistic simulations of radio observations of a galaxy cluster and of an HII region in M31. We show that MORESANE is able to efficiently reconstruct images composed from a wide variety of sources from radio interferometric data. Comparisons with other available algorithms, which include multi-scale CLEAN and the recently proposed methods by Li et al. (2011) and Carrillo et al. (2012), indicate that MORESANE provides competitive results in terms of both total flux/surface brightness conservation and fidelity of the reconstructed model. MORESANE seems particularly well suited for the recovery of diffuse and extended sources, as well as bright and compact radio sources known to be hosted in galaxy clusters.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication on A&

    A 3-D wavelet analysis of substructure in the Coma cluster: statistics and morphology

    Evidence for clustering within the Coma cluster is found by means of a multiscale analysis of the combined angular-redshift distribution. We have compiled a catalogue of 798 galaxy redshifts from published surveys from the region of the Coma cluster. We examine the presence of substructure and of voids at different scales ranging from 1to16h1\sim 1 to \sim 16 h^{-1} Mpc, using subsamples of the catalogue, ranging from cz=3000cz=3000 km/s to cz=28000cz=28000 km/s. Our substructure detection method is based on the wavelet transform and on the segmentation analysis. The wavelet transform allows us to find out structures at different scales and the segmentation method allows us a quantitative statistical and morphological analysis of the sample. From the whole catalogue we select a subset of 320 galaxies, with redshifts between cz=5858 km/s and cz=8168 km/s that we identify as belonging to the central region of Coma and on which we have performed a deeper analysis, on scales ranging from 180h1180 h^{-1} kpc to 1.44h11.44 h^{-1} Mpc. Our results are expressed in terms of the number of structures or voids and their sphericity for different values of the threshold detection and at all the scales investigated. According to our analysis, there is strong evidence for multiple hierarchical substructure, on scales ranging from a few hundreds of kpc to about 4h14 h^{-1} Mpc. The morphology of these substructures is rather spherical. On the scale of 720h1720 h^{-1} kpc we find two main subclusters which where also found before, but our wavelet analysis shows even more substructures, whose redshift position is approximatively marked by these bright galaxies: NGC 4934 & 4840, 4889, 4898 & 4864, 4874 & 4839, 4927, 4875.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures.
