    Pyrolysis of agricultural waste to produce fuel gas involves formation of tars as noxious by-products. In this paper the qualitative analysis of tars formed during pyrolysis of rice husks is presented, based on identification by gas chromatography—mass spectrometry and interpolation of retention times on a polyaromatic hydrocarbon index scale. The influence of some reaction parameters on product formation is briefly discussed

    Magnetic-field-induced singularities in spin dependent tunneling through InAs quantum dots

    Current steps attributed to resonant tunneling through individual InAs quantum dots embedded in a GaAs-AlAs-GaAs tunneling device are investigated experimentally in magnetic fields up to 28 T. The steps evolve into strongly enhanced current peaks in high fields. This can be understood as a field-induced Fermi-edge singularity due to the Coulomb interaction between the tunneling electron on the quantum dot and the partly spin polarized Fermi sea in the Landau quantized three-dimensional emitter.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Digital intervention increases influenza vaccination rates for people with diabetes in a decentralized randomized trial

    People with diabetes (PWD) have an increased risk of developing influenza-related complications, including pneumonia, abnormal glycemic events, and hospitalization. Annual influenza vaccination is recommended for PWD, but vaccination rates are suboptimal. The study aimed to increase influenza vaccination rate in people with self-reported diabetes. This study was a prospective, 1:1 randomized controlled trial of a 6-month Digital Diabetes Intervention in U.S. adults with diabetes. The intervention group received monthly messages through an online health platform. The control group received no intervention. Difference in self-reported vaccination rates was tested using multivariable logistic regression controlling for demographics and comorbidities. The study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov: NCT03870997. A total of 10,429 participants reported influenza vaccination status (5158 intervention, mean age (±SD) = 46.8 (11.1), 78.5% female; 5271 control, Mean age (±SD) = 46.7 (11.2), 79.4% female). After a 6-month intervention, 64.2% of the intervention arm reported influenza vaccination, vers us 61.1% in the control arm (diff = 3.1, RR = 1.05, 95% CI [1.02, 1.08], p = 0.0013, number needed to treat = 33 to obtain 1 additional vaccination). Completion of one or more intervention messages was associated with up to an 8% increase in vaccination rate (OR 1.27, 95% CI [1.17, 1.38], p < 0.0001). The intervention improved influenza vaccination rates in PWD, suggesting that leveraging new technology to deliver knowledge and information can improve influenza vaccination rates in high-risk populations to reduce public health burden of influenza. Rapid cycle innovation could maximize the effects of these digital interventions in the future with other populations and vaccines

    Nuclear matter effects on J/ψJ/\psi production in asymmetric Cu+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 200 GeV

    We report on J/ψJ/\psi production from asymmetric Cu+Au heavy-ion collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at both forward (Cu-going direction) and backward (Au-going direction) rapidities. The nuclear modification of J/ψJ/\psi yields in Cu++Au collisions in the Au-going direction is found to be comparable to that in Au++Au collisions when plotted as a function of the number of participating nucleons. In the Cu-going direction, J/ψJ/\psi production shows a stronger suppression. This difference is comparable in magnitude and has the same sign as the difference expected from shadowing effects due to stronger low-xx gluon suppression in the larger Au nucleus. The relative suppression is opposite to that expected from hot nuclear matter dissociation, since a higher energy density is expected in the Au-going direction.Comment: 349 authors, 10 pages, 4 figures, and 4 tables.     Production of π0\pi^0 and η\eta mesons in U++U collisions at sNN=192\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192 GeV

    The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider measured π0\pi^0 and η\eta mesons at midrapidity in U++U collisions at sNN=192\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192 GeV in a wide transverse momentum range. Measurements were performed in the π0(η)γγ\pi^0(\eta)\rightarrow\gamma\gamma decay modes. A strong suppression of π0\pi^0 and η\eta meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central U++U collisions relative to binary scaled pp++pp results. Yields of π0\pi^0 and η\eta mesons measured in U++U collisions show similar suppression pattern to the ones measured in Au++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV for similar numbers of participant nucleons. The η\eta/π0\pi^0 ratios do not show dependence on centrality or transverse momentum, and are consistent with previously measured values in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, and e+ee^+e^- collisions.Comment: 403 authors from 72 institutions, 13 pages, 6 figures, 7 tables, 2012 data. v2 is version accepted by Physical Review C.     Inclusive cross section and double-helicity asymmetry for π0\pi^{0} production at midrapidity in pp++pp collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510 GeV

    PHENIX measurements are presented for the cross section and double-helicity asymmetry (ALLA_{LL}) in inclusive π0\pi^0 production at midrapidity from pp++pp collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510~GeV from data taken in 2012 and 2013 at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics theory calculation is in excellent agreement with the presented cross section results. The calculation utilized parton-to-pion fragmentation functions from the recent DSS14 global analysis, which prefer a smaller gluon-to-pion fragmentation function. The π0ALL\pi^{0}A_{LL} results follow an increasingly positive asymmetry trend with pTp_T and s\sqrt{s} with respect to the predictions and are in excellent agreement with the latest global analysis results. This analysis incorporated earlier results on π0\pi^0 and jet ALLA_{LL}, and suggested a positive contribution of gluon polarization to the spin of the proton ΔG\Delta G for the gluon momentum fraction range x>0.05x>0.05. The data presented here extend to a currently unexplored region, down to x0.01x\sim0.01, and thus provide additional constraints on the value of ΔG\Delta G. The results confirm the evidence for nonzero ΔG\Delta G using a different production channel in a complementary kinematic region.Comment: 413 authors, 8 pages, 4 figures. v2 is version accepted as PRD Rapid Communication.
