The Fantastic Four: A plug 'n' play set of optimal control pulses for enhancing nmr spectroscopy
We present highly robust, optimal control-based shaped pulses designed to
replace all 90{\deg} and 180{\deg} hard pulses in a given pulse sequence for
improved performance. Special attention was devoted to ensuring that the pulses
can be simply substituted in a one-to-one fashion for the original hard pulses
without any additional modification of the existing sequence. The set of four
pulses for each nucleus therefore consists of 90{\deg} and 180{\deg}
point-to-point (PP) and universal rotation (UR) pulses of identical duration.
These 1 ms pulses provide uniform performance over resonance offsets of 20 kHz
(1H) and 35 kHz (13C) and tolerate reasonably large radio frequency (RF)
inhomogeneity/miscalibration of (+/-)15% (1H) and (+/-)10% (13C), making them
especially suitable for NMR of small-to-medium-sized molecules (for which
relaxation effects during the pulse are negligible) at an accessible and widely
utilized spectrometer field strength of 600 MHz. The experimental performance
of conventional hard-pulse sequences is shown to be greatly improved by
incorporating the new pulses, each set referred to as the Fantastic Four

Populations of Pear Thrips, \u3ci\u3eTaeniothrips Inconsequens\u3c/i\u3e (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in Sugar Maple Stands in Vermont: 1989-2005
Development of an effective IPM strategy for pear thrips, Taeniothrips inconsequens (Uzel) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), a pest of sugar maple, Acer saccharum Marshall, demands an understanding of their population fluctuations over time. Pear thrips populations were monitored using a standardized soil sampling method every fall from 1989 – 2005 in 14 counties of Vermont (U.S.). Data from individual sites were combined into north, central and south regions. High numbers of thrips emerged from soil sampled in 1989, 1990, 1993 and 2001, particularly in the north region (Washington, Lamoille, and Franklin counties). The central and south regions had lower pear thrips populations over all years. These results provide, for the first time, fundamental knowledge of pear thrips populations across a wide geographical area of Vermont and will assist in the design of suitable control strategies for pear thrips in the future
Perceived Threat Associated with Police Officers and Black Men Predicts Support for Policing Policy Reform
Racial disparities in policing and recent high-profile incidents resulting in the deaths of Black men have ignited a national debate on policing policies. Given evidence that both police officers and Black men may be associated with threat, we examined the impact of perceived threat on support for reformed policing policies. Across three studies we found correlational evidence that perceiving police officers as threatening predicts increased support for reformed policing practices (e.g., limiting the use of lethal force and matching police force demographics to those of the community). In contrast, perceiving Black men as threatening predicted reduced support for policing policy reform. Perceived threat also predicted willingness to sign a petition calling for police reform. Experimental evidence indicated that priming participants to associate Black men with threat could also reduce support for policing policy reform, and this effect was moderated by internal motivation to respond without prejudice. Priming participants to associate police officers with threat did not increase support for policing policy reform. Results indicate that resistance to policing policy reform is associated with perceiving Black men as threatening. Moreover, findings suggest that publicizing racially charged police encounters, which may conjure associations between Black men and threat, could reduce support for policing policy reform
The New Zealand Strong Motion Earthquake Recorder Network
The network of strong-motion earthquake recorders, maintained throughout
New Zealand by the Engineering Seismology Section of the Department of
Scientific and Industrial Research, is described. The instruments are either
deployed as ground instruments to measure potential earthquake attack on
structures, or in structures, e.g. buildings, dams and industrial installations,
to record structural response. Details are given of installation of instruments , maintenance, laboratory work, record retrieval and digitisation,
costs and staffing for the network. Future developments mooted include an
improved digitising system, the introduction of an improved version of the
existing mechanical-optical instrument in 1979, and, in the long term, the
introduction of an entirely new digital recorder, having an electrical
output from its accelerometers, which will make possible the transmission
of data by telephone or radio link
Very High Resolution Solar X-ray Imaging Using Diffractive Optics
This paper describes the development of X-ray diffractive optics for imaging
solar flares with better than 0.1 arcsec angular resolution. X-ray images with
this resolution of the \geq10 MK plasma in solar active regions and solar
flares would allow the cross-sectional area of magnetic loops to be resolved
and the coronal flare energy release region itself to be probed. The objective
of this work is to obtain X-ray images in the iron-line complex at 6.7 keV
observed during solar flares with an angular resolution as fine as 0.1 arcsec -
over an order of magnitude finer than is now possible. This line emission is
from highly ionized iron atoms, primarily Fe xxv, in the hottest flare plasma
at temperatures in excess of \approx10 MK. It provides information on the flare
morphology, the iron abundance, and the distribution of the hot plasma.
Studying how this plasma is heated to such high temperatures in such short
times during solar flares is of critical importance in understanding these
powerful transient events, one of the major objectives of solar physics. We
describe the design, fabrication, and testing of phase zone plate X-ray lenses
with focal lengths of \approx100 m at these energies that would be capable of
achieving these objectives. We show how such lenses could be included on a
two-spacecraft formation-flying mission with the lenses on the spacecraft
closest to the Sun and an X-ray imaging array on the second spacecraft in the
focal plane \approx100 m away. High resolution X-ray images could be obtained
when the two spacecraft are aligned with the region of interest on the Sun.
Requirements and constraints for the control of the two spacecraft are
discussed together with the overall feasibility of such a formation-flying
mission
Ionic conductivity on a wetting surface
Recent experiments measuring the electrical conductivity of DNA molecules
highlight the need for a theoretical model of ion transport along a charged
surface. Here we present a simple theory based on the idea of unbinding of ion
pairs. The strong humidity dependence of conductivity is explained by the
decrease in the electrostatic self-energy of a separated pair when a layer of
water (with high dielectric constant) is adsorbed to the surface. We compare
our prediction for conductivity to experiment, and discuss the limits of its
