Finding The Sign Of A Function Value By Binary Cellular Automaton
Given a continuous function , suppose that the sign of only has
finitely many discontinuous points in the interval . We show how to use
a sequence of one dimensional deterministic binary cellular automata to
determine the sign of where is the (number) density of 1s in
an arbitrarily given bit string of finite length provided that satisfies
certain technical conditions.Comment: Revtex, uses amsfonts, 10 page
Comparing user experiences in using Twiki & Mediawiki to facilitate collaborative learning
This research seeks to determine the perceived effectiveness of using TWiki and MediaWiki in collaborative work and knowledge management; and to compare the use of TWiki and MediaWiki in terms of user experiences in the master’s level of study at the University of Hong Kong. Through a multiple case study approach, the study adopted a mixed methods research design which used both quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze findings from specific user groups in two study programmes. In the study, both wiki platforms were regarded as suitable tools for group work co-construction, which were found to be effective in improving group collaboration and work quality. Wikis were also viewed as enabling tools for knowledge management. MediaWiki was rated more favorably than TWiki, especially in the ease of use and enjoyment experienced. The paper should be of interest to educators who may want to explore wiki as a platform to enhance students’ collaborative group work.postprintThe 6th International Conference on Knowledge Management (ICKM 2009), Hong Kong, 3-4 December 2009. On the cohomology of pseudoeffective line bundles
The goal of this survey is to present various results concerning the
cohomology of pseudoeffective line bundles on compact K{\"a}hler manifolds, and
related properties of their multiplier ideal sheaves. In case the curvature is
strictly positive, the prototype is the well known Nadel vanishing theorem,
which is itself a generalized analytic version of the fundamental
Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem of algebraic geometry. We are interested
here in the case where the curvature is merely semipositive in the sense of
currents, and the base manifold is not necessarily projective. In this
situation, one can still obtain interesting information on cohomology, e.g. a
Hard Lefschetz theorem with pseudoeffective coefficients, in the form of a
surjectivity statement for the Lefschetz map. More recently, Junyan Cao, in his
PhD thesis defended in Grenoble, obtained a general K{\"a}hler vanishing
theorem that depends on the concept of numerical dimension of a given
pseudoeffective line bundle. The proof of these results depends in a crucial
way on a general approximation result for closed (1,1)-currents, based on the
use of Bergman kernels, and the related intersection theory of currents.
Another important ingredient is the recent proof by Guan and Zhou of the strong
openness conjecture. As an application, we discuss a structure theorem for
compact K{\"a}hler threefolds without nontrivial subvarieties, following a
joint work with F.Campana and M.Verbitsky. We hope that these notes will serve
as a useful guide to the more detailed and more technical papers in the
literature; in some cases, we provide here substantially simplified proofs and
unifying viewpoints.Comment: 39 pages. This survey is a written account of a lecture given at the

Recognition for Positive Behavior as a Critical Youth Development Construct: Conceptual Bases and Implications on Youth Service Development
Recognition for positive behavior is an appropriate response of the social environment to elicit desirable external behavior among the youth. Such positive responses, rendered from various social systems, include tangible and intangible reinforcements. The following theories are used to explain the importance of recognizing positive behavior: operational conditioning, observational learning, self-determination, and humanistic perspective. In the current work, culturally and socially desirable behaviors are discussed in detail with reference to Chinese adolescents. Positive behavior recognition is especially important to adolescent development because it promotes identity formation as well as cultivates moral reasoning and social perspective thinking from various social systems. The significance of recognizing positive behavior is illustrated through the support, tutorage, invitation, and subsidy provided by Hong Kong's social systems in recognition of adolescent volunteerism. The practical implications of positive behavior recognition on youth development programs are also discussed in this work
Attosecond electron spectroscopy using a novel interferometric pump-probe technique
We present an interferometric pump-probe technique for the characterization
of attosecond electron wave packets (WPs) that uses a free WP as a reference to
measure a bound WP. We demonstrate our method by exciting helium atoms using an
attosecond pulse with a bandwidth centered near the ionization threshold, thus
creating both a bound and a free WP simultaneously. After a variable delay, the
bound WP is ionized by a few-cycle infrared laser precisely synchronized to the
original attosecond pulse. By measuring the delay-dependent photoelectron
spectrum we obtain an interferogram that contains both quantum beats as well as
multi-path interference. Analysis of the interferogram allows us to determine
the bound WP components with a spectral resolution much better than the inverse
of the attosecond pulse duration.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Cohomology of bundles on homological Hopf manifold
We discuss the properties of complex manifolds having rational homology of
including those constructed by Hopf, Kodaira and
Brieskorn-van de Ven. We extend certain previously known vanishing properties
of cohomology of bundles on such manifolds. As an application we consider
degeneration of Hodge-deRham spectral sequence in this non Kahler setting.Comment: To appear in Proceedings of 2007 conference on Several complex

Direct determination of the sign of the NO dipole moment.
We report a novel approach for determining the sign of permanent dipole moments, using nitric oxide [NO(v=0)] as an example. State-selected NO (j=|m|=|Ω=1/2) molecules are focused using a hexapole and oriented in a strong dc electric field. The angular distributions of ionic fragments resulting from extreme ultraviolet single-photon and multiphoton dissociative ionization at 400 and 800 nm are measured and indicate that the dipole moment is negative (corresponding to N-O+). The experiments thus rule out an error in the sign of the dipole of NO as the possible source of a remarkable discrepancy between previous theoretical and experimental work on orientation effects in bimolecular collisions involving oriented NO. © 2007 The American Physical Society
A new concurrent chemotherapy with vinorelbine and mitomycin C in combination with radiotherapy in patients with locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck
Objective: The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility and toxicity of concurrent chemotherapy with vinorelbine and mitomycin C in combination with accelerated radiotherapy (RT) in patients with locally advanced cancer of the head and neck. Patients and Methods: Between January 2003 and March 2004, 15 patients with T4/N2-3 squamous cell carcinoma (12/15) and with N3 cervical lymph node metastases of carcinoma of unknown primary (3/15) were treated with chemotherapy and simultaneous accelerated RT. Results: 11 patients completed therapy without interruption or dose reduction. Grade 3 - 4 acute mucosal toxicity was observed in 9/15 patients, grade 4 hematologic toxicity in 6/15 patients. At a median follow-up of 7.5 months, 2 patients have died of intercurrent disease, 2 patients have experienced local relapse; 5 patients are alive with no evidence of disease at the primary tumor site. Discussion: The described regimen is highly effective, but led to remarkable side effects
