    Computer simulations of electrorheological fluids in the dipole-induced dipole model

    We have employed the multiple image method to compute the interparticle force for a polydisperse electrorheological (ER) fluid in which the suspended particles can have various sizes and different permittivites. The point-dipole (PD) approximation being routinely adopted in computer simulation of ER fluids is shown to err considerably when the particles approach and finally touch due to multipolar interactions. The PD approximation becomes even worse when the dielectric contrast between the particles and the host medium is large. From the results, we show that the dipole-induced-dipole (DID) model yields very good agreements with the multiple image results for a wide range of dielectric contrasts and polydispersity. As an illustration, we have employed the DID model to simulate the athermal aggregation of particles in ER fluids both in uniaxial and rotating fields. We find that the aggregation time is significantly reduced. The DID model accounts for multipolar interaction partially and is simple to use in computer simulation of ER fluids.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Benefits of physical activity not affected by air pollution: a prospective cohort study

    BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) is beneficial to human health, whereas long-term exposure to air pollution is harmful. However, their combined effects remain unclear. We aimed to estimate the combined (interactive) mortality effects of PA and long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) among older adults in Hong Kong. METHODS: Participants aged ≥65 years from the Elderly Health Service Cohort (n = 66 820) reported their habitual PA at baseline (1998-2001) and were followed up till 31 December 2011. We used a satellite-based spatiotemporal model to estimate PM2.5 concentration at the residential address for each participant. We used Cox proportional hazards regression to assess the interaction between habitual PA and long-term exposure to PM2.5 on cardiovascular and respiratory mortality. We tested for additive interaction by estimating relative excess risk due to interaction and multiplicative interaction employing P-value for the interaction term. RESULTS: The death risks were inversely associated with a higher volume of PA and were positively associated with long-term exposure to PM2.5. The benefits of PA were more pronounced for participation in traditional Chinese exercise (e.g. Tai Chi) and aerobic exercise (e.g. cycling). We found little evidence of interaction between PA (volume and type) and long-term exposure to PM2.5 on either additive or multiplicative scales. CONCLUSIONS: In this cohort of older Chinese adults, PA may decrease the risk of mortality, be it in areas of relatively good or bad air quality. The beneficial mortality effects of habitual PA outweighed the detrimental effects of long-term exposure to air pollution in Hong Kong

    Semliki Forest virus strongly reduces mosquito host defence signaling

    The Alphavirus genus within the Togaviridae family contains several important mosquito-borne arboviruses. Other than the antiviral activity of RNAi, relatively little is known about alphavirus interactions with insect cell defences. Here we show that Semliki Forest virus (SFV) infection of Aedes albopictus-derived U4.4 mosquito cells reduces cellular gene expression. Activation prior to SFV infection of pathways involving STAT/IMD, but not Toll signaling reduced subsequent virus gene expression and RNA levels. These pathways are therefore not only able to mediate protective responses against bacteria but also arboviruses. However, SFV infection of mosquito cells did not result in activation of any of these pathways and suppressed their subsequent activation by other stimuli

    A new concurrent chemotherapy with vinorelbine and mitomycin C in combination with radiotherapy in patients with locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck

    Objective: The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility and toxicity of concurrent chemotherapy with vinorelbine and mitomycin C in combination with accelerated radiotherapy (RT) in patients with locally advanced cancer of the head and neck. Patients and Methods: Between January 2003 and March 2004, 15 patients with T4/N2-3 squamous cell carcinoma (12/15) and with N3 cervical lymph node metastases of carcinoma of unknown primary (3/15) were treated with chemotherapy and simultaneous accelerated RT. Results: 11 patients completed therapy without interruption or dose reduction. Grade 3 - 4 acute mucosal toxicity was observed in 9/15 patients, grade 4 hematologic toxicity in 6/15 patients. At a median follow-up of 7.5 months, 2 patients have died of intercurrent disease, 2 patients have experienced local relapse; 5 patients are alive with no evidence of disease at the primary tumor site.     Molecular characterization of fluoroquinolone-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical isolates from Shanghai, China

    China is one of the countries with the highest prevalence of fluoroquinolone-resistant (FQ r) Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Nevertheless, knowledge on the molecular characterization of the FQ r M. tuberculosis strains of this region remains very limited. This study was performed to investigate the frequencies and types of mutations present in FQ r M. tuberculosis clinical isolates collected in Shanghai, China. A total of 206 FQ r M. tuberculosis strains and 21 ofloxacin-sensitive (FQ s) M. tuberculosis strains were isolated from patients with pulmonary tuberculosis in Shanghai. The phenotypic drug susceptibilities were determined by the proportion method, and the mutations inside quinolone resistance-determining region (QRDR) of gyrA and gyrB genes were identified by DNA sequence analyses. Among 206 FQ r M. tuberculosis strains, 44% (90/206) were multidrug-resistant isolates and 39% (81/206) were extensively drug-resistant isolates. Only 9% (19/206) were monoresistant to ofloxacin. In total, 79.1% (163/206) of FQ r isolates harboured mutations in either gyrA or gyrB QRDR. Mutations in gyrA QRDR were found in 75.7% (156/206) of FQ r clinical isolates. Among those gyrA mutants, a majority (75.6%) harboured mutations at amino acid position 94, with D94G being the most frequent amino acid substitution. Mutations in gyrA QRDR showed 100% positive predictive value for FQ r M. tuberculosis in China. Mutations in gyrB were observed in 15.5% (32/206) of FQ r clinical isolates. Ten novel mutations were identified in gyrB. However, most of them also harboured mutations in gyrA, limiting their contribution to FQ r resistance in M. tuberculosis. Our findings indicated that, similar to other geographic regions, mutations in gyrA were shown to be the major mechanism of FQ r resistance in M. tuberculosis isolates.     Screening for Gynecologic Conditions With Pelvic Examination US Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement

    IMPORTANCE Many conditions that can affect women\u27s health are often evaluated through pelvic examination. Although the pelvic examination is a common part of the physical examination, it is unclear whether performing screening pelvic examinations in asymptomatic women has a significant effect on disease morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVE To issue a new US Preventive Services Task Force(USPSTF) recommendation on screening for gynecologic conditions with pelvic examination for conditions other than cervical cancer, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, for which the USPSTF has already made specific recommendations. EVIDENCE REVIEW The USPSTF reviewed the evidence on the accuracy, benefits, and potential harms of performing screening pelvic examinations in asymptomatic, nonpregnant adult women 18 years and older who are not at increased risk for any specific gynecologic condition. FINDINGS Overall, the USPSTF found inadequate evidence on screening pelvic examinations for the early detection and treatment of a range of gynecologic conditions in asymptomatic, nonpregnant adult women. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION The USPSTF concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of performing screening pelvic examinations in asymptomatic, nonpregnant adult women. (I statement) This statement does not apply to specific disorders for which the USPSTF already recommends screening (ie, screening for cervical cancer with a Papanicolaou smear, screening for gonorrhea and chlamydia)

    We discuss the properties of complex manifolds having rational homology of S1×S2n1S^1 \times S^{2n-1} including those constructed by Hopf, Kodaira and Brieskorn-van de Ven.     Direct determination of the sign of the NO dipole moment.

    We report a novel approach for determining the sign of permanent dipole moments, using nitric oxide [NO(v=0)] as an example. State-selected NO (j=|m|=|Ω=1/2) molecules are focused using a hexapole and oriented in a strong dc electric field. The angular distributions of ionic fragments resulting from extreme ultraviolet single-photon and multiphoton dissociative ionization at 400 and 800 nm are measured and indicate that the dipole moment is negative (corresponding to N-O+). The experiments thus rule out an error in the sign of the dipole of NO as the possible source of a remarkable discrepancy between previous theoretical and experimental work on orientation effects in bimolecular collisions involving oriented NO. © 2007 The American Physical Society

    Lagrangian Floer superpotentials and crepant resolutions for toric orbifolds

    We investigate the relationship between the Lagrangian Floer superpotentials for a toric orbifold and its toric crepant resolutions. More specifically, we study an open string version of the crepant resolution conjecture (CRC) which states that the Lagrangian Floer superpotential of a Gorenstein toric orbifold X\mathcal{X} and that of its toric crepant resolution YY coincide after analytic continuation of quantum parameters and a change of variables. Relating this conjecture with the closed CRC, we find that the change of variable formula which appears in closed CRC can be explained by relations between open (orbifold) Gromov-Witten invariants. We also discover a geometric explanation (in terms of virtual counting of stable orbi-discs) for the specialization of quantum parameters to roots of unity which appears in Y. Ruan's original CRC ["The cohomology ring of crepant resolutions of orbifolds", Gromov-Witten theory of spin curves and orbifolds, 117-126, Contemp. Math., 403, Amer. Math. Soc., Providence, RI, 2006]. We prove the open CRC for the weighted projective spaces X=P(1,,1,n)\mathcal{X}=\mathbb{P}(1,\ldots,1,n) using an equality between open and closed orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants.     Fertility, pregnancy and delivery in women after biventricular repair for double outlet right ventricle

    Objectives: To investigate outcome of pregnancy and fertility in women with double outlet right ventricle (DORV). Methods: Using 2 congenital heart disease registries, 21 female patients with DORV (aged 18-39 years) were retrospectively identified. Detailed recordings of each patient and their completed (>20 weeks gestation) pregnancies were recorded. Results: Overall, 10 patients had 19 pregnancies, including 3 spontaneous miscarriages (16%). During the 16 live birth pregnancies, primarily (serious) noncardiac complications were observed, e.g. premature labor/delivery (n = 7 and n = 3, respectively), small for gestational age (n = 4), preeclampsia (n = 2) and recurrence of congenital heart disease (n = 2). Except for postpartum endocarditis and deterioration of subpulmonary obstruction, only mild cardiac complication pregnancies were recorded. Two women with children reported secondary female infertility. Several menstrual cycle disorders were reported: secondary amenorrhea (n = 4), primary amenorrhea (n = 3) and oligomenorrhea (n = 2). Conclusion: Successful pregnancy in women with DORV is possible. Primarily noncardiac complications were observed and only few (minor) cardiac complications. Infertility and menstrual cycle disorders appear to be more prevalent. Copyrigh
