Nummulite biostratigraphy at the Middle/Upper Eocene boundary in the northern Mediterranean area

    Get PDF
Some larger foraminifera assemblages (mostly nummulitids) near the Middle/Upper Eocene boundary have been investigated. Sections of the Veneto area (Berici and Lessini Mts., northern Italy) were studied and compared with others of the same age from Spain (Ebro basin) and Romania (Cluj-Napoca). In the Veneto area the results allow to split the upper Middle Eocene Nummulites brongniarti Zone into two biozones: a lower N. lyelli Zone and an upper N. biedai Zone. The N. aff. fabianii Zone is here renamed N. variolarius/incrassatus Zone. This subdivision can also be recognized in Spain and Romania.According to the current conceptions, the base of the Priabonian (= Upper Eocene) could correspond either to the base of the N. fabianii s.s. Zone or to the base of the N. variolarius/incrassatus Zone. Anyway, the Mossano succession could be a potential Global Stratotype Section and Point for the base of the Priabonian

We have prepared scree-printed films of the Y-Ba-Cu-O composuperconductiund starting from a spray-pyrolysis precursor powder. BeO ceramic substrates are confirmed to be inert with respect to the film up to about 100 C. Electrical properties of oxigen annealed films are investigated, evidencing excellent superconducting behaviour, both in terms of Tc (=91K) and Jc (>100 Asquarecm at 77K)

RS3PE and the role of ultrasound. A case report and brief review of the literature

Remitting seronegative symmetric synovitis with pitting edema (RS3PE) is a rare syndrome characterised by acute onset of symmetrical distal synovitis and tenosynovitis, associated with severe pitting edema of the dorsum of the hands and feet, seronegativity for autoimmunity and dramatic response to glucocorticoids. First described by McCarty . in 1985, RS3PE is reported mostly in elderly males, but it can also rarely occur in young people. Although it was initially regarded as a form of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), it is now considered a clinical distinct entity that can be associated with other rheumatologic conditions or be secondary to underlying diseases, such as cancer. As revealed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the typical landmark of RS3PE is extensor tenosynovitis. Due to extensive subcutaneous edema of the extremities, the clinical assessment of synovitis and tenosynovitis is difficult. On the other hand, the use of MRI is expensive, time-consuming and requires experienced staffs. Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) may be a viable, reliable and cost-effective tool for evaluation of RS3PE patients. We hereby report the case of an 84 year-old woman presenting with bilateral hand and wrist swelling and morning stiffness. Clinical examination, laboratory tests and imaging led to a diagnosis of RS3PE. The aim of this report is to discuss the role of MSUS in RS3PE for the purpose of diagnosis and differential diagnosis compared with other rheumatologic conditions

Abstract : In one of the most referred legal-culture centers by the Brazilian criminal doctrine representatives Italy , the legal treatment of political dissent became, between nineteenth and twentieth centuries, an agenda that raised many controversies among criminalists. That is because while they were inserted in a troubled political scene, where Criminal Law was called upon to protect the newly unified State, these individuals were also holders of civic prominence and sensitivity, which impelled them to safeguard individual rights. For them, political crime appeared as one of the most finished examples of the duel (so typical of modern Criminal Law) between order and freedom, giving rise to a multiplicity of representations in their scientific writings. Following the trails of this discussion, this dissertation deals with the political crime representations in Brazilian criminal doctrine of the so called First Republic , that will be sought in manuals, commented or annotated codes, treaties and articles collections of wide circulation at the time, gathered under the name of "Criminal Science". More than mapping the position of each author, the thesis seeks to trace a pattern of its ideological and cultural features: were they more likely to defend the State or to the individual right of resistance? Throughout the work, it will be possible to observe how some peculiarities of the Brazilian s First Republic political formation and legal culture guided our doctrinal representations of political crime in very different directions however, not less interesting of those drawn by Italian authors. These differences will be used as relevant data to launch, as an answer to the question about the ideological and cultural features, an interpretation that leads to the view of a kind of "tacit consensus" around the State defense in the works of most of the analyzed authors

Analytical, numerical and experimental study of the finite inflation of circular membranes

In the present work we derive an analytical expression for the pressure–deflection curve of circular membranes subjected to inflation. This problem has been studied mostly from a numerical point of view and there is still a lack of accurate closed-form solutions in nonlinear elasticity. The analytical formulation is developed with a semi-inverse method by setting a priori the kinematics of deformation of the membrane. A compressible Mooney–Rivlin material model is considered and a pressure–deflection relation is derived from the equilibrium. The kinematics is approximated and therefore the obtained solution is not exact. Consequently, the formulation is adjusted by introducing an additional polynomial function in the pressure–deflection equation. The polynomial is calibrated by fitting numerical solutions of the exact system of differential equilibrium equations. The calibration is done over a wide range of constitutive parameters that covers the response of all rubber materials for technological applications. As a result, a definitive and accurate expression of the applied pressure as a function of the deflection of the membrane is obtained. The formula is validated with finite element (FE) simulations and compared with other solutions available in the literature. The comparison shows that the present model is more accurate. In addition, unlike the other models, it can be applied to compressible materials. Experimental uniaxial and bulge tests are carried out on rubber materials and the model proposed is used to characterize the Mooney–Rivlin constitutive parameters. Since the pressure–deflection formula is accurate and easy-to-use, it is an innovative tool in engineering applications of inflated membranes

Surface anisotropy in nanomagnets: transverse or N\'eel ?

Through the hysteresis loop and magnetization spatial distribution we study and compare two models for surface anisotropy in nanomagnets: a model with transverse anisotropy axes and N\'eel's model. While surface anisotropy in the transverse model induces several jumps in the hysteresis loop because of the cluster-wise switching of spins, in the N\'eel model the jumps correspond to successive {\it coherent partial rotations} of the whole bunch of spins. These calculations together with experimental results suggest that N\'eel's model for surface anisotropy is more appropriate.Comment: 12 pages, 6 eps figure

    Time-resolved PhotoEmission Spectroscopy on a Metal/Ferroelectric Heterostructure

In thin film ferroelectric capacitor the chemical and electronic structure of the electrode/FE interface can play a crucial role in determining the kinetics of polarization switching. We investigate the electronic structure of a Pt/BaTiO3/SrTiO3:Nb capacitor using time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The chemical, electronic and depth sensitivity of core level photoemission is used to probe the transient response of different parts of the upper electrode/ferroelectric interface to voltage pulse induced polarization reversal. The linear response of the electronic structure agrees quantitatively with a simple RC circuit model. The non-linear response due to the polarization switch is demonstrated by the time-resolved response of the characteristic core levels of the electrode and the ferroelectric. Adjustment of the RC circuit model allows a first estimation of the Pt/BTO interface capacitance. The experiment shows the interface capacitance is at least 100 times higher than the bulk capacitance of the BTO film, in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions from the literature.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures.
