    New and improved method of bamboo cultivation in semi arid areas of Indian Thar desert

    Bamboo (Dendrocalamus strictus Roxb.) is widely utilized in construction, pulp and paper, furniture, food and medicine, fuel and handicrafts for a long time. Due to its wider application, a field experiment was carried out to check its cultivation requirements besides its success rate in semi arid area of Indian Thar desert. In the present work, Guggul (Commiphora wightii Arnott.) which is a resident plant of Thar desert has been proved as a potential intercrop in bamboo cultivation. Improved growth was observed in bamboo with plant height (8.92 to 20.74 feet), number of culms (19 to 38), culm diameter (2.2 to 4.3 cm) during intercropping of guggul. Among different methods of irrigation, highest growth was recorded in drip irrigated plants where 50% recommended N:P:K and organic manure were given in combination followed by N:P:K sole. This study indicates that Guggul may play a role in microclimate development in the bamboo cultivation. This is the first report on successful bamboo cultivation in semi arid area of desert using an intercrop.Key words: Dendrocalamus, soil enzymes, fertilization, guggul, nitrogen

    How Clinically Relevant Is C-Reactive Protein for Blacks with Metabolic Syndrome to Predict Microalbuminuria?

    Background: The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with elevated urinary albumin (UA) excretion and C-reactive protein (CRP). However, potential differences in CRP levels on the association between individual components of the MetS and microalbuminuria (MA; 30-300 μg/mL) and/or UA (0-300 μg/mL) by race/ethnicity is unknown. Methods: We analyzed National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) data, (1999-2010) for adults (≥20 years of age) with the MetS (N = 5700). The Sobel-Goodman mediation test examined the influence of CRP on the association between individual MetS components and both MA and UA by race/ethnicity. We applied machine learning models to predict UA. Results: CRP mediated the association between waist circumference (WC) and MA in Whites and Hispanics but not in Blacks. However, in general, the proportion of the total effect of MetS components on UA, mediated by CRP, was: 11% for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and 40% for WC (P < 0.001). In contrast to MA, the mediation effect of CRP for WC and UA was highest for Blacks (94%) compared with Whites (55%) or Hispanics (18%), P < 0.05. The prediction of an elevated UA concentration was increased in Blacks (∼51%) with the MetS when CRP was added to the random forest model. Conclusions: CRP mediates the association between UA and both HDL-C and WC in Whites and Blacks and between UA and WC in Hispanics. Moreover, the machine learning approach suggests that the incorporation of CRP may improve model prediction of UA in Blacks. These findings may favor screening for CRP in persons with the MetS, particularly in Blacks

    A National Perspective of Do-Not-Resuscitate Order Utilization Predictors in Intracerebral Hemorrhage

    Nontraumatic intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Do-not-resuscitate (DNR) orders are linked to poorer outcomes in patients with ICH, possibly due to less active management. Demographic, regional, and social factors, not related to ICH severity, have not been adequately looked at as significant predictors of DNR utilization. We reviewed the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project\u27s Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database in 2011 for adult ICH admissions and DNR status. We generated hierarchical 2-level multivariate regression models to estimate adjusted odds ratios. We analyzed 25 768 ICH hospitalizations, 18% of which (4620 hospitalizations) had DNR orders, corresponding to national estimates of 126 254 and 22 668, respectively. In multivariable regression, female gender, white or Hispanic/Latino ethnicity, no insurance coverage, and teaching hospitals were significantly associated with increased DNR utilization after adjusting for confounders. There was also significantly more interhospital variability in the lowest quartile of hospital volume. In conclusion, demographic factors and insurance status are significantly associated with increased DNR utilization, with more individual hospital variability in low-volume hospitals. The reasons for this are likely qualitative and linked to patient, provider, and hospital practices
