Bio-intensive integrated management strategy for mustard aphid Lipaphis erysimi Kalt. (Homoptera: Aphididae)

Among the various treatments evaluated for their bio-efficacy against mustard aphid on Indian mustard during 2011-12 and 2012-13 at CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, the spray of Dimethoate 30 EC @ 1 ml/l followed by Verticillium lecanii @ 108 CS/ml was proved to be the best treatment with pooled mean aphid population of 4.5, 3.25 and 1.65 aphids/plant as against 22.0, 24.0 and 26.0 aphids/plant in the control after 3, 7 and 10 days of treatment, respectively. The pooled mean seed yield was also maximum (1485.0 kg/ha) in this treatment as compared to control (1305.0 kg/ha).The treatment was found on par with spray of dimethoate @ 1 ml/l followed by Coccinella septempunctata @ 5,000 beetles/ha with pooled mean aphid population of 5.0, 4.0 and 2.0 aphids/plant after 3, 7 and 10 days of treatment, respectively and pooled mean seed yield of (1470.0 kg/ha). But the cost benefit ratio was maximum (7.25) in treatment dimethoate followed by C. septempunctata and NSKE @ 5% followed by C. septempunctata @ 5,000 beetles/ha (6.68). Thus, entomopathogenic fungi like V. lecanii or NSKE along with release of C. septempunctata can be used as alternative measure to manage mustard aphid instead of solely relying on insecticides

An extended Falicov-Kimball model on a triangular lattice

The combined effect of frustration and correlation in electrons is a matter of considerable interest of late. In this context a Falicov-Kimball model on a triangular lattice with two localized states, relevant for certain correlated systems, is considered. Making use of the local symmetries of the model, our numerical study reveals a number of orbital ordered ground states, tuned by the small changes in parameters while quantum fluctuations between the localized and extended states produce homogeneous mixed valence. The inversion symmetry of the Hamiltonian is broken by most of these ordered states leading to orbitally driven ferroelectricity. We demonstrate that there is no spontaneous symmetry breaking when the ground state is inhomogeneous. The study could be relevant for frustrated systems like $GdI_2$, $NaTiO_2$ (in its low temperature C2/m phase) where two Mott localized states couple to a conduction band.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure

Multivariate analysis in relation to breeding system in opium popy, Papaver somniferum L.

The opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) is an important medicinal plant of great pharmacopoel uses. 101 germplasm lines of different eco-geographical origin maintained at National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow were evaluated to study the genetic divergence for seed yield/plant, opium yield/plant and its 8 component traits following multivariate and canonical analysis. The genotypes were grouped in 13 clusters and confirmed by canonical analysis. Sixty eight percent genotypes (69/101) were genetically close to each other and grouped in 6 clusters (II, III, IV, V, VIII, XII) while apparent diversity was noticed for 32 percent (32/101) of the genotypes who diversed into rest 7 clusters (I, VI, VII, IX, X, XI, XIII). Inter cluster distance ranged from 47.28 to 234.55. The maximum was between IX and X followed by VII and IX (208.30) and IX and XI (205.53). The genotypes in cluster IX, X. XI, and XII had greater potential as breeding stock by virtue of high mean values of one or more component characters and high statistical distance among them. Based on findings of high cluster mean of component trait and inter-cluster distance among clusters, a breeding plan has been discussed
