    Characteristics of Iron Ore Slime from Kiriburu, India

    The mineralogical, size and chemical characteristics of slime vary from discharge point to the distal part of the Tailing pond of Kiriburu iron ore mines. They can be grouped as three end members of slime composition- (i) coarse grained dense martite microplaty hematite type, (ii) coarse to medium grained goethite and clay dominated martite hematite type, (iii) fine grained hematite-goethite-clay type, occurring systematically away from the discharge point. Any slime will have a bulk composition intermediate to these three end members. The study has significance in the planning for exploitation of slime

    Room Temperature Ferrimagnetism, Magnetodielectric and Exchange Bias Effect in CoFeRhO4_4

    Geometrically frustrated structures combined with competing exchange interactions that have different magnitudes are known ingredients for achieving exotic properties. Herein, we studied detailed structural, magnetic, thermal (specific heat), magneto-dielectric, and magnetic exchange bias properties of a mixed 3d - 4d spinel oxide with composition CoFeRhO4_4. Detailed magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron powder diffraction studies (NPD) highlight long-range ferrimagnetic ordering with an onset at 355 K. The magnetic structure is established using a ferrimagnetic model (collinear-type) that has a propagation vector k = 0, 0, 0. The magneto-dielectric effect appears below the magnetic ordering temperature, and the exchange bias (EB) effect is observed in field cooled (FC) conditions below 355 K. The magneto-dielectric coupling in CoFeRhO4_4 originates due to the frustration in the structure, collinear ferrimagnetic ordering, and uncompensated magnetic moments. The unidirectional anisotropy resulting from the uncompensated magnetic moments causes the room-temperature exchange bias effect. Remarkably, the appearance of technologically important properties (ferromagnetism, magnetodielectric effect, and EB) at room temperature in CoFeRhO4_4 indicates its potential use in sensors or spintronics.Comment: 8 pages, 11 Figure

    Gender Differences in Perception and Care-seeking for Illness of Newborns in Rural Uttar Pradesh, India

    Although gender-based health disparities are prevalent in India, very little data are available on care-seeking patterns for newborns. In total, 255 mothers were prospectively interviewed about their perceptions and action surrounding the health of their newborns in rural Uttar Pradesh, India. Perception of illness was significantly lower in incidence (adjusted odds ratio=0.56, 95% confidence interval 0.33-0.94) among households with female versus male newborns. While the overall use of healthcare providers was similar across gender, the average expenditure for healthcare during the neonatal period was nearly four-fold higher in households with males (Rs 243.3±537.2) compared to females (Rs 65.7±100.7) (p=0.07). Households with female newborns used cheaper public care providers whereas those with males preferred to use private unqualified providers perceived to deliver more satisfactory care. These results suggest that, during the neonatal period, care-seeking for girls is neglected compared to boys, laying a foundation for programmes and further research to address gender differences in neonatal health in India

    Advances in Basic and Translational Research as Part of the Center for the Study of Complex Malaria in India.

    The Center for the Study of Complex Malaria in India (CSCMi) is one of 10 International Centers of Excellence in Malaria Research funded by the National Institutes of Health since 2010. The Center combines innovative research with capacity building and technology transfer to undertake studies with clinical and translational impact that will move malaria control in India toward the ultimate goal of malaria elimination/eradication. A key element of each research site in the four states of India (Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Odisha, and Meghalaya) has been undertaking community- and clinic-based epidemiology projects to characterize the burden of malaria in the region. Demographic and clinical data and samples collected during these studies have been used in downstream projects on, for example, the widespread use of mosquito repellants, the population genomics of Plasmodium vivax, and the serological responses to P. vivax and Plasmodium falciparum antigens that reflect past or present exposure. A focus has been studying the pathogenesis of severe malaria caused by P. falciparum through magnetic resonance imaging of cerebral malaria patients. Here we provide a snapshot of some of the basic and applied research the CSCMi has undertaken over the past 12 years and indicate the further research and/or clinical and translational impact these studies have had

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) in Head and Neck Cancer neoplasm virtual biorepository is a bioinformatics-supported system to incorporate data from various clinical, pathological, and molecular systems into a single architecture based on a set of common data elements (CDEs) that provides semantic and syntactic interoperability of data sets.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The various components of this annotation tool include the Development of Common Data Elements (CDEs) that are derived from College of American Pathologists (CAP) Checklist and North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACR) standards. The Data Entry Tool is a portable and flexible Oracle-based data entry device, which is an easily mastered web-based tool. The Data Query Tool helps investigators and researchers to search de-identified information within the warehouse/resource through a "point and click" interface, thus enabling only the selected data elements to be essentially copied into a data mart using a multi dimensional model from the warehouse's relational structure.</p> <p>The SPORE Head and Neck Neoplasm Database contains multimodal datasets that are accessible to investigators via an easy to use query tool. The database currently holds 6553 cases and 10607 tumor accessions. Among these, there are 965 metastatic, 4227 primary, 1369 recurrent, and 483 new primary cases. The data disclosure is strictly regulated by user's authorization.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The SPORE Head and Neck Neoplasm Virtual Biorepository is a robust translational biomedical informatics tool that can facilitate basic science, clinical, and translational research. The Data Query Tool acts as a central source providing a mechanism for researchers to efficiently find clinically annotated datasets and biospecimens that are relevant to their research areas. The tool protects patient privacy by revealing only de-identified data in accordance with regulations and approvals of the IRB and scientific review committee.</p

    Role of H- and D- MATE-Type Transporters from Multidrug Resistant Clinical Isolates of Vibrio fluvialis in Conferring Fluoroquinolone Resistance

    Background: The study seeks to understand the role of efflux pumps in multidrug resistance displayed by the clinical isolates of Vibrio fluvialis, a pathogen known to cause cholera-like diarrhoea. Methodology: Two putative MATE family efflux pumps (H- and D-type) were PCR amplified from clinical isolates of V. fluvialis obtained from Kolkata, India, in 2006 and sequenced. Bioinformatic analysis of these proteins was done to predict protein structures. Subsequently, the genes were cloned and expressed in a drug hypersusceptible Escherichia coli strain KAM32 using the vector pBR322. The recombinant clones were tested for the functionality of the efflux pump proteins by MIC determination and drug transport assays using fluorimeter. Results: The sequences of the genes were found to be around 99 % identical to their counterparts in V. cholerae. Protein structure predicting servers TMHMM and I-TASSER depicted ten-twelve membrane helical structures for both type of pumps. Real time PCR showed that these genes were expressed in the native V. fluvialis isolates. In the drug transport assays, the V. fluvialis clinical isolates as well as recombinant E. coli harbouring the efflux pump genes showed the energydependent and sodium ion-dependent drug transport activity. KAM32 cells harbouring the recombinant plasmids showed elevated MIC to the fluoroquinolones, norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin but H-type pumps VCH and VFH from V. cholerae and V. fluvialis respectively, showed decreased MIC to aminoglycosides like gentamicin, kanamycin and streptomycin.     A New Class of Bianchi Type-I Cosmological Models in Scalar-Tensor Theory of Gravitation and Late Time Acceleration

    A new class of a spatially homogeneous and anisotropic Bianchi type-I cosmological models of the universe for perfect fluid distribution within the framework of scalar-tensor theory of gravitation proposed by Saez and Ballester (Phys. Lett. 113:467, 1986) is investigated. To prevail the deterministic solutions we choose the different scale factors which yield time-dependent deceleration parameters (DP) representing models which generate a transition of the universe from the early decelerated phase to the recent accelerating phase. Three different physically viable models of the universe are obtained in which their anisotropic solutions may enter to some isotropic inflationary era. The modified Einstein's field equations are solved exactly and the models are found to be in good concordance with recent observations.
