    Qualitative and quantitative studies on the bacterial flora of two beaches viz., Colva and Siridaon at high tide, mid-tide and low tide levels during the pre-monsoon period were made. Estimations of important nutrients, like inorganic phosphates and nitrates and organic carbon have been made and correlation with the bacterial counts is being attempted. Definite correlation between bacterial population and organic carbon is seen however, no correlation is observed between bacterial counts and other physicochemical parameters

    Following a brief outline of the physiography of the Indian Ocean, an examination is made of the current situation regarding contamination of the environment. Prominent marine pollutants and the consequences of the marine disposal are discussed, considering in particular oil pollution, heavy metal pollution, agricultural wastes and domestic wastes. Research activities conducted in the area investigating the levels of marine pollution are detailed, and an evaluation made of future prospects concerning the monitoring and control of pollution

    Fracture strength of endodontically treated lateral incisors restored with new zirconia reinforced rice husk nanohybrid composite

    This study aimed to compare the fracture strength, fracture pattern and type of fracture of endodontically treated maxillary lateral incisors restored with new zirconia reinforced rice husk nanohybrid composite. Eighty mature permanent maxillary lateral incisors from patients age range of 30-60 years with single canal were selected and randomly divided into: Group 1 ? RCT + nanofilled composite (Filtek), Group 2 ? RCT + microhybrid composite (Zmack), Group 3 ? RCT + new nanohybrid composite (Zr-Hybrid) and Group 4 - Intact teeth (control). Standardized mesio-palatal-distal cavity was prepared, and endodontic treatment was carried out using crown-down technique until size 30, tapered 0.04. Obturation was completed using single cone technique with gutta-percha and AH plus sealer. Cavity access was restored with respective composite resins. Next, teeth were stored in incubator for 24 hours and subdivided into aged and unaged subgroups. Teeth in aged subgroups were subjected to 2500 thermal cycles for 5ºC, 37ºC and 55ºC with 30 seconds dwell time and 5 seconds transfer time. After that, root surfaces of teeth were covered with silicone-based material and placed in boxes filled with acrylic until the cemento-enamel-junction (CEJ) level. They were then tested under Universal Testing Machine until fracture occurred. Samples were then viewed under Leica microscope to determine the fracture pattern and type of fracture. Data analyzed using One-way ANOVA complimented by post hoc Tukey HSD and paired sample T test for fracture strength. Fracture pattern and type of fracture were analyzed using Chi-square test. Level of significance was set at p0.05). Besides, Group 3 and Group 4 showed higher rate of favorable fracture pattern, followed by Group 1 and lastly Group 2. Most favorable fracture pattern was noted to exhibit horizontal fracture type (86.36%), whereas most unfavorable fracture pattern exhibited vertical fracture type (77.78%). Endodontically treated teeth restored with new zirconia reinforced rice husk nanohybrid composite (Zr-Hybrid) demonstrated higher fracture strength than commercialized composite resins especially after artificial ageing. Zr-Hybrid showed similar fracture pattern to those of intact teeth with higher rate of horizontal fracture type

    Training standards and recommendations for intervention on chronic total occlusions

    Despite major advances in coronary intervention, the recanalization of a chronic total occlusion (CTO) remains a challenge for many interventional cardiologists. Complex anatomy and lesion characteristics demand a special set of skills for procedural success. Provided patient selection is appropriate, CTO intervention can confer a variety of benefits including relief of angina, improvement in left ventricular function and reduction in ischemic burden. The chances of procedural success are enhanced by having a dedicated CTO program. This involves adequate training of staff, quality control and availability of equipment. A diverse toolkit allows variation in strategy and increases procedural success. Further, skills and equipment are required to manage complications like vessel dissection, perforation and the resultant ischemic or mechanical complications. These procedures can often be lengthy and giving careful consideration to peri-procedural issues like radiation exposure and contrast dose plays a vital role in ensuring optimal patient outcomes and radiation hygiene. In this article we review the evidence behind indications for CTO intervention and discuss the development of a CTO program

    Diurnal variations of some physico-chemical factors in the Zuari estuary of Goa

    90-93Diurnal variations of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and nutrient salts at two locations in the Zuari estuary were studied in different seasons as a part of the project on the Ecology of Mandovi and Zuari estuaries with special reference to changes in living resources. Marked changes were noted in all the parameters. Temperature and salinity variations followed the tidal rhythm in all the seasons. Except silicates the other chemical factors, viz, dissolved oxygen, phosphates and nitrates, showed distribution independent of tidal variations, the silicate behaved more as a non-conservative factor within the estuary. Probably reasons and significance of the variations were discussed
