The Design of Random Surfaces with Specified Scattering Properties: Surfaces that Suppress Leakage
We present a method for generating a one-dimensional random metal surface of
finite length L that suppresses leakage, i.e. the roughness-induced conversion
of a surface plasmon polariton propagating on it into volume electromagnetic
waves in the vacuum above the surface. Perturbative and numerical simulation
calculations carried out for surfaces generated in this way show that they
indeed suppress leakage.Comment: Revtex 6 pages (including 4 figures
Conceptual design of a lunar base thermal control system
Space station and alternate thermal control technologies were evaluated for lunar base applications. The space station technologies consisted of single-phase, pumped water loops for sensible and latent heat removal from the cabin internal environment and two-phase ammonia loops for the transportation and rejection of these heat loads to the external environment. Alternate technologies were identified for those areas where space station technologies proved to be incompatible with the lunar environment. Areas were also identified where lunar resources could enhance the thermal control system. The internal acquisition subsystem essentially remained the same, while modifications were needed for the transport and rejection subsystems because of the extreme temperature variations on the lunar surface. The alternate technologies examined to accommodate the high daytime temperatures incorporated lunar surface insulating blankets, heat pump system, shading, and lunar soil. Other heat management techniques, such as louvers, were examined to prevent the radiators from freezing. The impact of the geographic location of the lunar base and the orientation of the radiators was also examined. A baseline design was generated that included weight, power, and volume estimates
Random Surfaces that Suppress Single Scattering
We present a method for generating numerically a one-dimensional random
surface, defined by the equation x_3 = \zx, that suppresses single-scattering
processes in the scattering of light from it within a specified range of
scattering angles. Rigorous numerical calculations of the scattering of light
from surfaces generated by this approach show that the single-scattering
contribution to the mean scattered intensity is indeed suppressed within that
range of angles.Comment: 3 pagers (Latex), 3 figure
Synchronization Model for Stock Market Asymmetry
The waiting time needed for a stock market index to undergo a given
percentage change in its value is found to have an up-down asymmetry, which,
surprisingly, is not observed for the individual stocks composing that index.
To explain this, we introduce a market model consisting of randomly fluctuating
stocks that occasionally synchronize their short term draw-downs. These
synchronous events are parameterized by a ``fear factor'', that reflects the
occurrence of dramatic external events which affect the financial market.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Design of one-dimensional Lambertian diffusers of light
We describe a method for designing a one-dimensional random surface that acts
as a Lambertian diffuser. The method is tested by means of rigorous computer
simulations and is shown to yield the desired scattering pattern.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
Personality Disorder in Childhood and Adolescence comes of Age: a Review of the Current Evidence and Prospects for Future Research
In this article, the authors provide a narrative review of the mounting evidence base on personality disorder in childhood and adolescence. Topics covered include diagnostic validity, prevalence, developmental issues, comorbidity, risk and protective factors, and treatment. Novel indicated prevention and early intervention programs for borderline personality disorder in adolescence are given special priority. To conclude, directions for future research are provided
