    Development of a non-intrusive technique for temperature and concentration measurements in a liquid

    The purpose of the present work is the development of Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence technique for temperature and concentration measurements in liquid phase of a two phase flow. The basis of technique PLIF are studied and two application are carried out:1-color PLIF and 2-color PLIF. A preliminar calibration is carried out to characterize the solution used and to study the influence of the dye as intrusive. The measurements are performed on a cell at homogeneous temperature and on the sprays. A particular setup is designed for applying the technique on the spray. Data processing is developed to select the best technique between 1-color and 2-color and study the influence of some parameter on the accuracy of the measurements. Finally, further studies are suggested with regard to some parameters that could improve accuracy

    Behaviour of micropiles in heterogeneous coarse soils

    This paper reports on an experimental investigation on the behaviour of small-diameter piles, commonly referred to as micropiles. This particular type of deep foundation is frequently used in many barely accessible Italian mountainous areas, often characterised by complex ground profiles composed of mixtures of coarse soils with some fine matrix elements including cobbles and large-diameter boulders. In such ground conditions, the lack of reliable site and laboratory geotechnical investigations providing an accurate soil mechanical description and conservative approaches for micropile design often lead to significant underestimation of the vertical ultimate load. In order to improve micropile design in such geological contexts, a new field trial investigation involving tension and compression load tests on micropiles up to failure was set up in a selected test site located in the Italian alpine region. From interpretation of the load tests carried out so far, the reliability of commonly used calculation methods for estimating bearing capacity is discussed. As a result, a new approach for a more suitable calculation of the mobilised shaft and base resistance of micropiles bored in highly coarse soils is tentatively propos

    MPM simulations of the impact of fast landslides on retaining dams

    Possible protection systems against flow-like landslides are earth dams built to stop or deviate the flow. The evaluation of impact forces on the structures is still based on oversimplified empirical approaches, which may lead to a very conservative design, with high costs and environmental impact. Numerical methods able to capture the essential features of the phenomenon can offer a valuable tool to support the design of protection measures. This paper shows the potentialities of the Material Point Method (MPM) in this field. A dry granular flow, modelled with the Mohr-Coulomb model is considered.     Analysis of piezocone penetration under different drainage conditions with the two-phase Material Point Method

    The piezocone penetration test (CPTU) is commonly used to identify the soil profile and to estimate material properties. Depending on the soil type, ranging from clay to sand, undrained, partially drained or drained conditions may occur during cone penetration. In silt and sand-clay mixtures the CPTU penetration is characterized by partially drained conditions, which are often neglected in data interpretation. The effect of drainage on CPTU measurements has been mainly studied experimentally. Numerical analyses are rare because taking into account large soil deformations, soil-water and soil-structure interactions, as well as non-linear soil behaviour is still a challenging task. This paper presents and discusses numerical simulations of CPTU in saturated soils with the two-phase Material Point Method. Soil behaviour is described with the Modified Cam Clay model. This study investigates the effects of pore pressure dissipation during penetration, cone roughness and horizontal stress state, comparing the results with experimental data. The paper discusses the effect of neglecting partial drainage in deriving the shear strength parameters for silty soils and suggests a procedure to estimate the consolidation coefficient performing CPTU at different penetration rates

    The transcription factors BEL1 and SPL are required for cytokinin and auxin signaling during ovule development in Arabidopsis

    Hormones, such as auxin and cytokinin, are involved in the complex molecular network that regulates the coordinated development of plant organs. Genes controlling ovule patterning have been identified and studied in detail; however, the roles of auxin and cytokinin in ovule development are largely unknown. Here we show that key cytokinin pathway genes, such as isopentenyltransferase and cytokinin receptors, are expressed during ovule development. Also, in a cre1-12 ahk2-2 ahk3-3 triple mutant with severely reduced cytokinin perception, expression of the auxin efflux facilitator PIN-FORMED 1 (PIN1) was severely reduced. In sporocyteless/nozzle (spl/nzz) mutants, which show a similar phenotype to the cre1-12 ahk2-2 ahk3-3 triple mutant, PIN1 expression is also reduced. Treatment with the exogenous cytokinin N-6-benzylaminopurine also altered both auxin distribution and patterning of the ovule; this process required the homeodomain transcription factor BELL1 (BEL1). Thus, this article shows that cytokinin regulates ovule development through the regulation of PIN1. Furthermore, the transcription factors BEL1 and SPL/NZZ, previously described as key regulators of ovule development, are needed for the auxin and cytokinin signaling pathways for the correct patterning of the ovule

    Customized finite element modelling of the human cornea

    Aim To construct patient-specific solid models of human cornea from ocular topographer data, to increase the accuracy of the biomechanical and optical estimate of the changes in refractive power and stress caused by photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). Method Corneal elevation maps of five human eyes were taken with a rotating Scheimpflug camera combined with a Placido disk before and after refractive surgery. Patient-specific solid models were created and discretized in finite elements to estimate the corneal strain and stress fields in preoperative and postoperative configurations and derive the refractive parameters of the cornea. Results Patient-specific geometrical models of the cornea allow for the creation of personalized refractive maps at different levels of IOP. Thinned postoperative corneas show a higher stress gradient across the thickness and higher sensitivity of all geometrical and refractive parameters to the fluctuation of the IOP. Conclusion Patient-specific numerical models of the cornea can provide accurate quantitative information on the refractive properties of the cornea under different levels of IOP and describe the change of the stress state of the cornea due to refractive surgery (PRK).     Questo lavoro si propone di esaminare la ricezione della figura e del ruolo di Giovanna d’Arco nel panorama culturale di Francia e Inghilterra, nel lungo periodo compreso tra XV e XX secolo. Partendo della ricostruzione del fatto storico, la riflessione si è poi concentrata sull’analisi delle fonti documentarie e letterarie che hanno fatto riferimento alla controversa vicenda della contadina-guerriera condannata al rogo e canonizzata cinquecento anni dopo la sua morte. L’obiettivo è quello di mostrare come, attraverso le costanti e svariate rielaborazioni delle quali è divenuta oggetto, la Pulzella abbia saputo farsi portavoce di temperie culturali, ideologie e movimenti politici; e come ella si sia gradatamente imposta nell’immaginario collettivo di un popolo a lei tradizionalmente ostile e poi divenuto suo primo e appassionato sostenitore. Ne consegue che l’eroina di Francia abbia infine determinato un confronto e una circolazione di opere tra due nazioni che, insieme, hanno contribuito alla creazione e all’affermazione di un mito tra cultura canonica e popolare, tra storia e rappresentazione

    Supporting Image Search with Tag Clouds: A Preliminary Approach

    Algorithms and techniques for searching in collections of data address a challenging task, since they have to bridge the gap between the ways in which users express their interests, through natural language expressions or keywords, and the ways in which data is represented and indexed.When the collections of data include images, the task becomes harder, mainly for two reasons. From one side the user expresses his needs through one medium (text) and he will obtain results via another medium (some images). From the other side, it can be difficult for a user to understand the results retrieved; that is why a particular image is part of the result set. In this case, some techniques for analyzing the query results and giving to the users some insight into the content retrieved are needed. In this paper, we propose to address this problem by coupling the image result set with a tag cloud of words describing it. Some techniques for building the tag cloud are introduced and two application scenarios are discussed
