Anglo-American corporate governance and the employment relationship: a case to answer?
The corporate governance environment in the UK and US is generally thought to be hostile to the emergence of cooperative employment relations of the kind exemplified by labour-management partnerships. We discuss case study evidence from the UK which suggests that, contrary to this widespread perception, enduring and proactive partnerships may develop, in conditions where management can convince shareholders of the long-term gains from this approach, and where other regulatory factors operate to extend the time-horizon for financial returns. Triple GEM Detectors for the Forward Tracker in STAR
Future measurements of the flavor-separated spin structure of the proton via
parity-violating W boson production at RHIC require an upgrade of the forward
tracking system of the STAR detector. This upgrade will allow the
reconstruction of the charge sign of electrons and positrons produced from
decaying W bosons. A design based on six large area triple GEM disks using GEM
foils produced by Tech-Etch Inc. has emerged as a cost-effective solution to
provide the necessary tracking precision. We report first results from a beam
test of three test detectors using Tech-Etch produced GEM foils and a laser
etched two dimensional strip readout. The detectors show good operational
stability, high efficiency and a spacial resolution of around 70 um or better,
exceeding the requirements for the forward tracking upgrade. The influence of
the angle of incidence of the particles on the spatial resolution of the

Consumers' Shopping Patterns and Expenditures on Ethnic Produce: A Case Study from the Eastern Coastal U.S.A.
This study was undertaken to examine the possible niche markets which East Coast farmers might be able to use to regain their advantage. Their future economic success could hinge on shifting the focus from traditional fruits and vegetables to high-value specialty ethnic produce for which there might be a growing demand. The study results indicate that there is a strong market demand and interest for ethnic produce in the East Coast. Local producers can benefit by concentrating their efforts in producing ethnic vegetables and fresh produce and making these newer products available in the local and regional markets.Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,
Sodium content as a predictor of the advanced evolution of globular cluster stars
The asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase is the final stage of nuclear burning
for low-mass stars. Although Milky Way globular clusters are now known to
harbour (at least) two generations of stars they still provide relatively
homogeneous samples of stars that are used to constrain stellar evolution
theory. It is predicted by stellar models that the majority of cluster stars
with masses around the current turn-off mass (that is, the mass of the stars
that are currently leaving the main sequence phase) will evolve through the AGB
phase. Here we report that all of the second-generation stars in the globular
cluster NGC 6752 -- 70 per cent of the cluster population -- fail to reach the
AGB phase. Through spectroscopic abundance measurements, we found that every
AGB star in our sample has a low sodium abundance, indicating that they are
exclusively first-generation stars. This implies that many clusters cannot
reliably be used for star counts to test stellar evolution timescales if the

Experimental design trade-offs for gene regulatory network inference: an in silico study of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell cycle
Time-series of high throughput gene sequencing data intended for gene
regulatory network (GRN) inference are often short due to the high costs of
sampling cell systems. Moreover, experimentalists lack a set of quantitative
guidelines that prescribe the minimal number of samples required to infer a
reliable GRN model. We study the temporal resolution of data vs quality of GRN
inference in order to ultimately overcome this deficit. The evolution of a
Markovian jump process model for the Ras/cAMP/PKA pathway of proteins and
metabolites in the G1 phase of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell cycle is
sampled at a number of different rates. For each time-series we infer a linear
regression model of the GRN using the LASSO method. The inferred network
topology is evaluated in terms of the area under the precision-recall curve
AUPR. By plotting the AUPR against the number of samples, we show that the
trade-off has a, roughly speaking, sigmoid shape. An optimal number of samples
corresponds to values on the ridge of the sigmoid

The effect of steady and pulsed air jet vortex generator blowing on an aerofoil section model undergoing sinusoidal pitching
Experimental results are reported on the assessment of steady and pulsed air jet vortex generators (AJVGs) for the suppression of dynamic stall on a sinusoidal pitching RAE9645 aerofoil model. Tests at Rec of 1 million, at reduced pitching frequencies between 0.01 and 0.10 were performed with and without steady and pulsed AJVG blowing. The effect of jet momentum coefficient (0.0003 < C < 0.0046), jet duty cycle (0.25 < DC < 1) and jet pulsing frequency (0.29 < F+ < 2.93) were investigated. Pulsed air jet blowing with F+ in the range 0.5 â 1.0 and with a duty cycle in the range 0.4 â 0.5, was found to be the most effective to achieve full suppression of dynamic stall vortex formation
